Drachenberg & Teufelsberg in Berlin
Devil Mountain & Dragon Mountain in Berlin,

Teufelsberg -- debris mountain in Berlin
The Teufelsberg represents the second biggest mountain inside Berlin/Germany. It consists of rubble from the Second World War and extends about 80 m out of the plain around. It is named after a lake, which is located very nearby: the Teufelssee.
The Teufelsberg is part of the Grunewald, an urban forest in the west of Berlin.
In the 1940ies, the area of the mountain was built-up with the shell construction of the technological faculty, which should become part of the Welthauptstadt Germania (World Capital Germania).
After the Second World War, the building was blown up, and its rests were used as building material for the reconstruction of buildings, which were destroyed during the war.
Since 1950 the ruins were filled up with rubble from the bombed town.
Until 1972 about a third of all rubble from bombed buildings in Berlin were transported to the top of this mountain.
After 1970 finally, the Teufelsberg was formed into a nature and free time area. Skiing and mountainbiking for example were enabled. Today, also during the summer, people use the winds on the top of the mountain to fly kites.
Since the late 1950s during the Cold War a listening station was built close to the Teufelsberg, which still exists as a ruin.

27. 2. 2011. Berlin. Grunewald.
Winter forest: Mount Drachenberg and forest Grunewald in Berlin (4K)
The Berlin forest Grunewald in winter, shown from the area of the urban nature refuge Teufelsberg. The colors, brownish and grey with a little bit of green, dominate the winter landscape. This has biological reasons:Trees of a forest drop their leaves during the autumn-period. This happens in order to reduce water loss due to evaporation.
Before they fall, leaves change their colors, sometimes into powerful red or yellow forms. Chemically, the plant modifies chlorophyll into colorless components. Proteins (result of photosynthesis) out of these chlorophylls are resorbed by the plant (tree) in order to save nutrients for the cold season.
Carotinoids then retain inside the leaves and appear in red or yellow shades.
In winter, most trees are completely leafless and remind to skeletons, waiting for the next warm period.

FREEDOM COMPROMISED: NSA Listening Station - Berlin, Germany
The US National Security Agency (NSA) built one of its largest listening stations atop the hill, rumored to be part of the global ECHELON intelligence gathering network. The Hill, as it was known colloquially by the many American soldiers who worked there around the clock and who commuted there from their quarters in the American Sector, was located in the British Sector. In July 1961, Mobile Allied listening units began operations on Teufelsberg, having surveyed various other locales throughout West Berlin in a search for the best vantage point for listening to Soviet, East German, and other Warsaw Pact nations military traffic. They found that operations from atop Teufelsberg offered a marked improvement in listening ability. This discovery eventually led to a large structure being built atop the hill, which would come to be run by the NSA (National Security Agency). Construction of a permanent facility was begun in October 1963. At the request of US government, the ski lifts were removed because they allegedly disturbed the signals. The station continued to operate until the fall of East Germany and the Berlin Wall, but after that the station was closed and the equipment removed. The buildings and antenna radomes still remain in place.
An empty building and geodesic dome at the listening station are covered with various murals and graffiti.
The abandoned buildings at Teufelsberg listening station have become a magnet for street artists.
During the NSA Operations some other curious things happened: It was noticed that during certain times the reception of the radio signals was better than during the rest of the year. The 'culprit' was found after a while: it was the Ferris wheel of the annual German-American Volksfest Festival on the Hüttenweg in Zehlendorf. From then on, the Ferris wheel was left standing for some time after the festival was over. While there were rumors that the Americans had excavated a shaft down into the ruins beneath, that was never proven, and was likely based on reports that those who maintained equipment in one of the first enclosed antenna structures accessed the upper levels of the inflated dome via an airlock that led to a tunnel that was embedded in the structure's central column. Speculation as to what might have existed within the highly restricted area frequently gave rise to rather elaborate but false rumors; one theory stated that the tunnel was an underground escape route, another that it housed a submarine base.

Drohne - Berlin - Radarstation Teufelsberg
Drohne: DJI Mavic Pro
