Early oil pioneers used nitroglycerin to fracture underground rock and increase production in their wells. It was dangerous, dramatic, and very successful. Drake Well Museum uses pyrotechnic explosions, oil history, humor, and a black powder shoot out to tell the stories about petroleum technology, illegal nitro production, and patent infringement for audiences of all ages.

Designing a New Oil Drilling Technique
While discussing with George Bissell the technique of drilling oil the two men came up with the idea to use the same method as salt drilling.
Drake hired William Uncle Billy Smith, a blacksmith, who knew how to work a salt well driller.
The goal was to drill down 1000 feet, but the drilling had to stop at 16 feet due to the earth collapsing inside the hole.
Drake reevaluated the situation and came up with the idea to design a drive pipe, aka a conductor. The drive pipe is described as having joints ten feet long and made from cast iron. The drill bit was located inside the pipe in order to prevent the earth from collapsing around the bit. Uncle Billy drilled approximately three feet at a time breaking through rock and shale.
Town Goes Wild after Petroleum Discovery
The task of drilling for oil was challenging and Drake hit many obstacles. After months of drilling without success he lost his financial backing and forced to find money elsewhere. The towns people began to call him Crazy Drake, still he persevered. Then on August 27, 1859, after drilling seventy feet, Drakes diligence paid off.
After the first oil drill success, thousands of people flocked to Titusville as was done during the 1849 gold rush. The small town pumped out 25 barrels a day and in some instances 3,000 barrels a day. Until 1901, Pennsylvania produced half of the worlds oil.

Drake Marries Philena Adams on December 16, 1845. Their first son, Arthur, was born in 1847, but he died a little over a year later. A second son was born in 1849, but he, too, only lived a few months. Shortly after Philena passed.
Drake re-married three years later to Laura Dowd, sixteen years his junior, in 1857.
Following his famous oil discovery, Drake became a justice of the peace in 1860 before illness would force him to quit and leave Pennsylvania. After several years of financial hardship, Drake and his family returned to Titusville with little money and with his health failing. In 1873, residents convinced the general assembly to provide the family an annual $1,500 pension.
Drake died in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on November 9, 1880. His remains were later moved to the Woodlawn Cemetery in Titusville. In 1902, Standard Oil Executive Henry Rogers commissioned a statue for his burial site. A monument – including the bronze statue by Charles Henry Niehaus – was dedicated on October 4, 1901.

You might not think it's that big of a deal, but without a first oil well, there's no internal combustion engine, so no motysickles. Well, you could run it on methane, but you'd need to lubricate it with something. And, let's face it, whales don't reproduce quickly enough for us to get all our lubricant from whale oil.

Col. Drake Memorial was dedicated on October 4, 1901 at Woodlawn Cemetery to celebrate the first successful oil well drilled in Titusville ,pa.Col.Edwin L. Drake drilled the first successful oil well August 27,1859 marking the birth of the modern oil industry.
1901 Standard Oil Executive Henry Huttleston Rogers donated 100,000 and commissioned a memorial to honour Col.Drake.The Drillerbronze sculpture was sculpted by Charles Henry Niehaus.In 2011 a $50,000 Dollar restoration was done on the bronze sculpture / granite.

This is video shot on 8-22-2009 in Bradford PA. This was shot in celebration of 150 years of the oil industry.

What a great ride. Round trip was about three hours and the scenery was awesome.
Vintage rail cars to ride in, an on board snack shop and the best part, an open air car where you can stand and watch everything go by.
