ASI SURFING TECHNIQUE - The Jump Up
This video shows how to make the transition from lying on the board to standing. This is sometimes referred to as getting to your feet, the jump up or the pop up.
Here’s what you do:
• Paddle fast for the wave
• As you lie on the surfboard, hold both rails on either side with your hands positioned under your shoulders, or just slightly behind. Keep your head up looking at the wave ahead.
• Push up from your knees, maintain your grip on the rails.
• As you do the push up, spring up off your knees onto your feet, maintaining your grip on the rails to control your balance, at this stage. Keep your head up looking at the wave ahead.
• Release your hands and COME UP SLOWLY. Keep your knees slightly bent. Your feet should be positioned across the stringer at shoulder width. Your arms are slightly out to your side. Your head is up and looking at the wave ahead. Your back should be fairly straight. The weight of your body should be centered through your feet and onto the board evenly.
There are a number of common mistakes that beginners make when trying to stand up.
• Standing up without having established your balance at the jump up stage. If you are not balanced at this point, you will probably fall off. Hold onto your rails and come up slowly.
• Standing too much to one side of the board. This will result in you falling off that side. You should be trying to stand up in the centre of the board.
• Throwing Yourself off the Board - This happens when you have jumped to the crouching position. Then, instead of slowly coming up from that position, you spring up with too much force and actually throw yourself off the board.
Practice makes perfect.
