Dublin slums: 1800-1925 by Jacinta Prunty
Part of Living in Victorian Dublin Seminar, Heritage Week 2017.
Recorded at Dublin City Hall on 26 August 2017.
Dr Jacinta Prunty is Head of the History Department at Maynooth University. She has written extensively on the Dublin Slums and her book of that title is a work which has been welcomed by geographers and historians alike. It gives a comprehensive and insightful account and analysis of Dublin’s inexorable transformation into a slum city; it provides a template for researchers in Irish urban history; and it awakens social historians to what they have to learn from the historical geographers.

IRELAND: DUBLIN: ENGLISH SOCCER HOOLIGANS ON RAMPAGE
English/Nat
England soccer fans are heading home in shame after going on the rampage at a supposedly friendly exhibition match with Ireland in Dublin.
Trouble flared when Ireland scored at the Lansdowne Road football ground last night (Wednesday) and the violence was so bad the game had to be abandoned.
The English supporters chanted No surrender to the I-R-A and hurled seats onto the pitch.
One man in his sixties collapsed and died after leaving the match and twenty others had to be treated in hospital.
Forty English fans were arrested and are expected to appear in court today (Thursday).
The first shipload of the disgraced supporters arrived at the port of Holyhead early this morning (Thursday).
Irish police had been warned that hard core troublemakers might be among the English fans, according to the head of Britain's National Intelligence Football Unit.
After the aborted match police moved to block off roads, separate the crowd, and herd fans towards trains. While Irish fans were moved out of danger English fans who had caused the disruption cheered and waved.
Police rode trains crammed with English fans as they heading to the port where ferries waited to take them back to Britain.
Other supporters had a much shorter journey - to police cells.
Forty England supporter were arrested and are expected in court later.
The scene at the ferry terminal in Dun Laoghaire was chaotic. Despite the show of force by the police, English fans continued to chant slogans.
The violence raises questions about England's participation in international games. England is due to host the European soccer championships in 1996.
One Irish soccer fan collapsed while leaving Lansdowne Road when the match was abandoned. Twenty people needed hospital treatment - including one who suffered a skull fracture.
As the second of two ships left a few minutes after midnight, the port area was suddenly calm. About thirty police joined the ferry to keep order aboard.
Sports authorities and politicians expressed disgust. One player described it as a sad night for football.

Dublin Medieval Charm and Georgian Splendour
This award winning DVD documentary film by Aidan Doyle on Dublin is presented and narrated by Cathal O'Shannon, one of Ireland's best known and respected documentary film presenter. The film, with a captivating music score by Ken Tuohy, is an ideal reference for tourists, students and all who live in Dublin or visit this great city. The Vikings landed north of Dublin on Lambay Island in 795 A.D. Half a century later their boats sailed up the River Liffey. They settled on its banks and named their settlement Dyfflin. Two centuries later the Normans invaded Ireland. Cathal O'Shannon's superb narration, together with realistic illustrations, captures the atmosphere of these periods in Dublin's turbulent history. The history of Christ Church and St. Patrick's Cathedrals is covered in great detail. Cathal visits Trinity College, home of the Book of Kells and covers the history of Gandon's famous buildings, The Custom House, The Four Courts and Parliament Buildings. Cathal takes a horse and carriage trip around the great Georgian Squares, Fitzwilliam and Merrion and outlines their history. Also covered is the rise and fall of Charles Stewart Parnell, the Phoenix Park murders of 1882, the 1913 workers strike and the Howth Gun Running episode culminating in the events of Easter Week 1916. This is illustrated with a superb collection of photographs courtesy of the various national archives. In Kilmainham Gaol Cathal tells the tragic story of Joseph Mary Plunkett who married Grace Gifford only hours before his execution in 1916. The War of Independence, the leadership of Michael Collins, and the Irish Civil war in Dublin is also included. Finally Cathal visits some of Dublin's most famous pubs associated with great Irish writers. He relaxes with a pint in Ireland's oldest pub, The Brazen Head Inn, and tells of the famous visitors who frequented it over the centuries.
