ON a fine September morning we take a walk across the River Liffey and over into the Temple Bar section of the old town center and up to Christ Church Cathedral. Then over to Dublin Castle, on to St. Stephen's Green, through Trinity College, and back to O'Connel St.
Dublin is an amazing place, full of history, architecture, and pubs. The foods not to bad either though hotels and accommodation is a bit expensive. I had several pints of Guinness while there but also tried several other Irish beers which were even better. As far as food and what to eat goes, my favorite was Irish Stew and also Lamb. I lucked out on the weather and our several days there were all sunny to partly cloudy but it can get rainy.
There's a bit more talking in this one and I apologize for the bumpy gimbal. It broke literally seconds after I pushed stop on the camera. I think I have it fixed now and hope to get a couple more towns and cities before we leave Ireland. I hope you enjoy this free walking tour Dublin.

DUBLIN WALK | O'Connell Street to Connolly Station
Connolly station (Irish: Stáisiún Uí Chonghaile) or Dublin Connolly is the busiest railway station in Dublin and Ireland, and is a focal point in the Irish route network. On the North side of the River Liffey, it provides InterCity, Enterprise and commuter services to the north, north-west, south-east and south-west. The North-South Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART) and Luas light rail services also pass through the station. The station offices are the headquarters of Irish Rail, Iarnród Éireann. Opened in 1844 as Dublin Station, the ornate facade has a distinctive Italianate tower at its centre.

Ireland #2 - Dublin: Joyce Walking Tour, Abbey Theatre, and more
Here is the second of our Ireland videos! Scenes and topics include: lapis Lazuli James Joyce Walking Tour James Quinn National Library Swans at Coolee Custom House Abbey Theatre visit Poets Corner Ha'penny Bridge.
Now here's the whole story:
We took a long walk to the James Joyce Cultural Center today to be a part of a regularly scheduled James Joyce Walking Tour that began at 9 a.m. Our host was the very capable and knowledgeable James Quinn. He was a font of knowledge about Joyce and Ulysses. Our tour focused on events and places in Chapter 8, the Lystrogonians.
Subsequently, throughout town we saw many places and plaques pertaining to Joyce's characters and actual life. I read a few pages of Ulysses during our stay in Dublin, just enough to remind myself of its flavor ( had read it in my 20's).
On our tour we passed the GPO, or General Post Office, where leaders of the Irish rebellion held out against the British. This was memorialized in Yeats' poem, Easter, 1916. Later, I re-read my college edition of Yeats' collected poems (assigned at Harpur College, SUNY Binghamton, freshman English) and enjoyed my handwritten notes and Martha's too, all from more than 40 years ago!
The National Library was our next stop. The exhibit on the ground floor while we were there was about W.B. Yeats, his life, loves and poetry. It was magnificently done! We lingered a long while in the audio-visual display that featured Yeats's voice and actors' voices reciting his poems with lovely imagery. I particular enjoyed his poem The Swans of Coolee and the matching photos.
The Library also has a gorgeous reading room. Unfortunately, no photos of it are permissible. Also, they are excessive in their security. Visitors can barely get close to the books, no less steal them.
Abbey Theatre performance of Brian Friel's The Aristocrats - This is a historic theatre, being founded by W.B. Yeats in the early 1900's. However, this building dates from the 1960's. We enjoyed Brian Friel's play, The Aristocrats, although it was hot inside the theatre. As an usher lady said, Back in the 1960's, they didn't think artists needed air conditioning.
The play is about a landed gentry family whose paterfamilias is in bad health, and the various tribulations of the siblings about life to follow. One of the characters was nervous, seemingly gay but really not, skinny and funny. I enjoyed his dialogue and monologues the most. Friel also wrote the widely praised, Dancing at Lunghasa, which I remember we loved; and Philadelphia, Here I Come! which I never saw, despite being from Philly!

Dublin remains the city of James Joyce and his magnum opus Ulysses, which has changed literature as much as Picasso did for the art. And Dublin is the city with musicians on each corner of the street!

Bloomsday in Dublin – a celebration of James Joyce's Ulysses
Hands up how many people have read James Joyce’s entire 265,000-word masterpiece, Ulysses? Okay, so you haven't yet, but you can still immerse yourself in Joyce’s Dublin for Bloomsday.
FAST FACTS:
- Ulysses was set over one day in Dublin – Thursday, June 16th 1904.
- It’s called Bloomsday because James Joyce’s character was called Leopold Bloom - hence, Bloomsday.
- Ulysses contains 265,000+ words
- Punctuation wasn’t big in Ulysses. Its final 24,048 words contained just two periods and one comma!
- It was banned in the US for being ‘obscene’ until 1934
- Joyce’s last words were: “Does nobody understand?”
There are plenty of places mentioned in Ulysses that you can visit, including:
– James Joyce Tower in Sandycove
– Sandymount Strand
– Duke Street’s Davy Byrne’s (Leopold ate a gorgonzola sandwich with a glass of burgundy here. You can, too!) and The Bailey.
– Sweny’s Chemist, Lincoln Place: no longer a dispensary, it’s now a quirky literary meeting place
– The National Library: a favourite hangout for Joyce…and location for the Scylla and Charybdis episode
– And The James Joyce Centre on Parnell Street

Bloomsday celebrates the day on which the action of James Joyce's novel Ulysses takes place; 16 June 1904. The day which we also reckon Joyce first went out with his future wife, Nora Barnacle. The day is celebrated in Dublin every year, serving as the perfect excuse for period costume, readings of Joyce's works and general merriment!
