Duchman Family Winery -- Driftwood, Texas
Founded in 2004, this Italian style winery in Texas is making good, affordable wines. Some Texas wine lovers will remember this place as Mandola Winery, which has since been sold. (Not to worry though, the Mandola's have a restaurant conveniently located next door.) One will first notice the vast vineyards that have been planted at the estate with a wide variety of grapes. The wine selection is well balanced between white and reds. The majority of the wines are crafted in a dry style, yet there are a few sweeter and dessert wines available in the mix. The Montepulciano should not be missed! An upscale restaurant on the premises has one of the more unique views of the vineyard and the Hill Country. When visiting, sit back under the oak trees at one of the picnic tables with your favorite bottle and enjoy this piece of Italy in Texas. Salute!

Wimberley Valley Winery -- Driftwood, Texas
The winery was started back in 1983. Many Texas wine lovers probably remember tasting their wines in historic Old Town Spring, Texas. Now, thanks to more modern Texas wine laws and few ordinance changes for the county and precinct, they now have a tasting room where it all began. Sweet and fruit wine lovers can definitely find something they like here. Some of the fruit wines are seasonal, so keep a wine nose out for them. The Christmas Cuvee is something you'll surely want to have with family and friends for the holidays. The new tasting room facility has an excellent décor that'll make you feel welcomed with lots of comfortable chairs for lounging and sharing your thoughts over a few glasses. Outside, you might notice some miniature horses grazing the lands. That's just part of the homey and country feel of the place. The pace of things out here in the country is slower, so relax and stop to smell the wine and roses.

O. Henry Recording:
“This is William Sydney Porter speaking, better known to you, no doubt, as O. Henry. I'm going to let you in on a few of my secrets in writing a short story. The most important thing, at least in my humble opinion, is to use characters you've crossed in your lifetime. Truth is indeed stranger than fiction. All of my stories are actual experiences that I have come across during my travels. My characters are facsimiles of actual people I've known. Most authors spend hours, I'm told even days, laboring over outlines of stories that they have in their minds. But not I. In my way of thinking that's a waste of good time. I just sit down and let my pencil do the rest. Many people ask me how I manage to get that final little twist in my stories. I always tell them that the unusual is the ordinary rather than the unexpected. And if you people listening to me now start thinking about your own lives, I'm sure you'll discover just as many odd experiences as I've had. I hope this little talk will be heard long after I'm gone. I want you all to continue reading my stories then too. Goodbye, folks.”

Hawk Shadow Estate Winery – Dripping Springs, Texas
Just north of Dripping Springs, but south of the Pedernales River are some spectacular Texas Hill Country views. What a perfect place to establish a vineyard and winery! This all family run business has done just that. Owners Doug Reed, Tom Reed, and Chip Concklin opened up their tasting room in February 2014 and are serving some great tasting Texas wines along with generous Texas hospitality. Tim Drake from Flat Creek has assisted with some consulting, as well. They currently have seven acres planted on the estate with one area on its fourth leaf and the other on its ninth. Varietals include: Grenache, Syrah, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Mourvedre, Nebbiolo, and Aglianico. The vines look quite healthy and cared for. As we all know, great wine starts with great grapes. Most of what is currently available for tasting has been sourced from the Texas High Plains while the estate vineyard has been maturing. There are three whites for tasting, but by no means are these your traditional white wines. As the owners will tell you, they make and serve “red style white wine for red wine drinkers”. The 2011 Orange Muscat is dry with some tawny toasted notes, making it quite unique compared to other Orange Muscats in the state as this one is dry without the sweet side that traditionally is used for this varietal. The 2012 version (same vineyard, different year) labeled, Big O, has a bit more alcohol, but also tastes just as good yet completely different from the 2011. Who thought that dry Orange Muscats could taste this good without being sweet, but the owners have done a fine job on those two. The barrel fermented and unfiltered Chenin Blanc will initially present the buttery notes with a lovely smoothness then finishes off as citrusy. The Texas Gal, a blend of Chenin Blanc and Muscat Canelli, has a hint of sweetness but not too much. For the reds, the 2012 Tres Robles is a blend of 78% Mourvedre and the rest comprised of Malbec and Syrah. It's light oak notes compliment the very strong strawberry, pomegranate and rhubarb aromas on the nose. Their local estate produced 2011 HSV is sold out but not to worry! A new vintage is already bottled and should be released by Fall 2014. You’ll also be in for a treat with their Wild Child 2. It has a nice smokiness yet remains quite smooth. They also have a Tempranillo barrel aged in Hungarian oak for twenty months….expect this one to be superb. Twenty months is a good bench mark for the winemaker. After all, quality cannot be rushed. Also in the works is a Syrah that is quite herbaceous. It, too, will be great on its own or as a complimentary blend in the future. When we visited, they were just about ready to harvest in the next day or two as the sugar was looking good on the fruit. We sampled some of their yet to be harvested Tempranillio grapes and they had wonderful flavors and characters for this yet to be aged juice. You could tell that the 2014 Tempranillo is going to be great tasting wine and a keeper for the cellar! We really enjoyed our initial visit to this up and coming rising star for Texas Hill Country Wineries. The owners and staff (family members) are extremely friendly, make you feel comfortable and at home, and are very happy to visit with you about what is going on at the winery. Hopefully, their future crops will be fruitful and their cases will multiply! We are definitely going back to check in and see how things progress and pick up some of the new releases. Cheers and Welcome to the Texas Hill Country Winery industry Hawk Shadow!!

Julianna visits Fredericksburg, TX! :: Vacation Day 3 :: March 15, 2013
We slept in this morning and decided to take a trip to Fredericksburg, TX. Fredericksburg is about an hour and 45 minutes from Garner State park and the drive there from Garner is BEAUTIFUL! You literally drive through the rolling hills of Texas. Once in Fredericksburg we had lunch, enjoyed some shopping on Main St (where Miss J announced that she needed a CUTE outfit) and then spent the rest of the afternoon visiting three vineyards : Becker, Pedernales Cellars and Grape Creek. Unfortunately, our camera battery died before we arrived back to Garner State Park and all you missed was us relaxing, going for a bike ride during sunset, roasting more marshmallows and gazing at the stars. It was another great day on our spring break trip!

Becker Vineyards - Stonewall, Texas
This has to be one of the classic winery destination stops of the Texas Hill Country. Established in 1992 by Richard and Bunny Becker when there was nothing out there, they have now helped establish Fre...dericksburg and the Texas Hill Country as a top destination for wine lovers in the state. With both estate vines and access to vineyards from the Texas High Plains and throughout most of Texas, the Beckers' have grape resources to make just about any quality Texas wine you can imagine. Any time of the year is a great time to visit as the winery has many events and live music occasions on a regular basis. Most wines made here are Bordeaux, Burgundian and Rhone style. The list of wines is quite extensive and to pick out a few to grab your attention would do injustice to the others. One thing is for sure, the older the reds you have from Becker wines the better they will be! Plus, the reds are good for your heart, just ask the doctor. The estate grounds have a log cabin built around 1890s. The reception hall adjacent to the winery is a great place for events. The outside grounds and surrounding Hill Country landscape makes a good backdrop for weddings. And there is more than just wine! Check out the lavender fields! During their annual Lavender Festival, you can enjoy picking your own lavender then enjoy some great tasting Becker wine. The winery also makes a great place for your first wine date. What's there not to like about this place? You just can't go wrong here! Check out their website to see what the latest events are and plan your next trip accordingly.

Maydelle Country Wines - Rusk, Texas
Deep in the heart of East Texas, is the second largest fruit wine producer of the state. Texas fruit wine lovers will definitely find something here that fits your taste buds. With selections including Elderberry (yes, Elderberry!), Grapefruit, Blackberry, Lime, Peach, Lemon, Pear wine and more, there is something for everyone to try. The award winning Grapefruit wine is wonderful and has been dubbed Maydelle Margarita. You can find their wines at a few select Specs stores. If your local store doesn't carry it, keep pestering them until they do. Don't be put off by the inconsistent bottle styles or color as they are Texas green friendly at recycling wine bottles. If you judge a book buy its cover or a dirt road on the other side of the railroad tracks in this case, you might miss one of the jewels of East Texas. Don't expect any fancy restaurant or Bed & Breakfast, just some good ol'southern hospitality this side of the Trinity River to make you feel warm and welcomed. Miss Daisy the hound might be waiting out front for you to welcome you too!

Andrew Jones of Field Recordings Wine: Ep. 145
It pays to be one of the most prolific vineyard cultivators and collaborators in the state of California. For starters, you get a feel for the trends (in some cases you make them), you know where all the quality fruit lives, and most importantly you know how to get the best stuff at the best price. Andrew Jones of Field Recordings is THE MAN when it comes to sourcing the best material for his projects, and what you get is a gorgeous product that looks great and tastes great, but despite all of its polish and breadth, is as close to handcrafted and boutique as you'd hope.

Hye Meadow Winery -- Hye, Texas
A brand spanking new winery is in the Texas Hill Country! In fact, it's so new that it's still under construction! Well, that doesn't prevent this winery entrepreneur from unofficially opening up their doors. Owners Mike & Denise Batek may have started ankle deep in the winery business with a couple of barrels over at William & Chris Winery, but now they are all in and there's no turning back. Besides a hope and a dream, Mike is a graduate of Texas Tech's viticulture program. Along with Jeff Ivy, the winemaker, these two gents are working on building a fine facility in Hye as well as making some great wine. The wine production building is where tasting is currently done. It is quite spacious and looks like it has capacity for their current and future needs. There are currently five wines available for tasting. All grapes were sourced from Washington, but don't let that dissuade you from trying them (sometimes when wineries get started, they have to source grapes from out of state until they get their own vineyard situated). To our die-hard Texas wine lover readers, keep in mind that Washington has some excellent grapes. The two whites available are a Chardonnay and a Gewurztraminer blend, both 2011. The Chardonnay has about 10% Riesling for a little extra twist and is naked -- aka unoaked. It is quite crisp and fruit forward. The Edelzwicker is the 50/50 Gewurztraminer and Riesling blend. It is quite aromatic and is excellent when served chilled. The blush wine, also 2011, is not overly sweet and is very refreshing in this Texas heat. It is a Gewurztraminer with 2% Cabernet added. The two reds available are 2010 vintages. The Sangiovese has a surprisingly good depth and complexity for such a varietal. It has about 25% Cabernet added to it. The Cabernet Sauvignon is young and fresh, and should continue to age well for a couple more years. Yes, it is good to drink now, but we think it will only improve if you let the wine gods enrich the flavor a little longer. Of course, we will feature these wines more in depth in a future blog posting. Sometime in July, Mike plans on releasing wines sourced from Texas grapes (both 2011 vintages). One will be a Viognier and the other will be a red blend of Tempranillo, Merlot, and Mourvedre. Though the tasting room and event buildings are still under construction, don't let that hinder you from admiring their majestic oak trees that form the backdrop to this exciting new venue. It is quite spectacular! How could one ever say no to this piece of wine country? There are plans in the future to add a vineyard. Mike is thinking about starting with Touriga and Aglianico. Both grapes have shown great promise in quality and yield in the Texas Hill Country. Who knows, maybe a port will be in the works, too! There are some events happing at the winery starting in July (including a pig roast) with the official grand opening on July 27th. This winery is a great addition to Hye and the Texas Hill Country. Do make this one of your stops on your next wine trek. Cheers!

Autunno – 2003; Becker Vineyards; Stonewall,Texas
Sometimes what was not intended...turns out to be just fine. This 12 year old bottle of Texas red wine may not have intended to start on this long journey and sit unopened for so long, but fate has turned out well for this one. This “Super Tuscan” blend of Sangiovese and Merlot (50/50) proved it could stand the test of time and still demonstrate its character in spite of its age. The bouquet was still nice and allowing the wine to breathe a bit really helped bring the vintage to life. It puts a nice “t” in tertiary aromas. Examining the wine in the glass to discern the color and note any separation, you may convince yourself that the color is fading, but honestly, little color separation was detected. You’ll swear that the taste continues to evolve with each taste, but not unexpected for a wine of this age. You’ll note some spice flavors consistently present throughout each sip. We realize the magical flavors fade quickly once a bottle of this age is opened and understand the need to fully enjoy it the day it is uncorked. Doubt there are too many of these bottles still lingering unopened, but if you find you have one, it does pair nicely with Italian dishes. As always, the artwork on the label is also worth saving with a lovely scene of Lake Austin in the Fall. Enjoyed this one!
