Many people know about the California Gold Rush of 1849, but what most people don't realize is that the “California Gold Rush was not the first strike of gold in the United States. In fact, the gold rush of northern Georgia occurred first - right here in the Helen and Dahlonega areas!

Dukes Creek Falls - Georgia
Dukes Creek - 11/19/15
Yoly and I decided to explore our north Georgia area on this beautiful 70 degree day. North Georgia is filled with beautiful waterfalls, may of them very well known and famous. Many of them, including this one are less than 45 minutes from our house. And keep in mind when you watch this video that Dukes Creek is just an ordinary small creek in the north Georgia watershed.
Dukes Creek is formed at the confluence of Bear Den Creek and Little Low Gap Branch. Dodd Creek forms at Raven Cliff Falls and joins Dukes Creek about a mile upstream from the falls. Shortly after the falls, Dukes Creek enters Smithgall Woods Conservation Area, bisecting the Georgia State Park. After leaving Smithgall Woods, Dukes Creek passes under Georgia State Road 75 and becomes a tributary of the Chattahoochee River less than a mile later.
The trail is a nice fairly level and mostly wide surface ending 1.1 miles from the parking lot at the falls. It drops in elevation by about 400 feet. It's a really beautiful trail where you hear the falls almost the entire way. Great way to spend the afternoon :-)

GEORGIA: AUSTRALIAN COMPANY TAKES ADVANTAGE OF UNTAPPED GOLD
Russian/Eng/Nat
The republic of Georgia in the Caucus mountains is famous for three things -- red wine, tea and Joseph Stalin.
But Georgia also has a two-and-a-half thousand year relationship with gold -- and used to be the world leader in crafting jewellery at the time of Ancient Greece.
Today Georgia owns one of the world's biggest gold mining reserves and hopes this will help take its jewellery to the top of the world market.
The gold mine in Kazreti, Georgia works around the clock to separate the precious yellow metal from the stones.
An Australian company is taking advantage of Georgia's untapped gold reserves in this joint venture project aimed at harvesting 700 kilograms of gold annually in the first phase of the operation.
But when it comes to mining gold, Georgia is no stranger.
This country in the southern Caucuses was already famous for its granulation techniques back in the third century B.C.
Its gold was well known to ancient Greek merchants who frequently visited Georgian masters to learn the art of jewellery making.
Today Georgia has become a literal gold mine for one Australian company.
They hope to find two tons of gold a year when the digging moves into its second phase.
SOUNDBITE:
We're quite excited about the potential for gold in Georgia. We think there's a lot of interesting exploration targets that will warrant more expenditure to more closely examine the potential. We hope to be moving a drill rig of our own in within the next couple of months to do some more study.
SUPER CAPTION: Keith Sherren, Operations Manager, QTZ Services Ltd.
Workers at this private jewellery store in Georgia's capital Tbilisi are busy refining golden bricks into precious jewellery.
They're working with Georgia's new gold -- a higher standard product than its predecessor -- to match the quality offered on the world market.
Georgia raised the level of its gold's quality in a bid to join international conventions on the hallmarking of precious metals.
The Georgian State Inspection Board for Precious Metals has already introduced its own hallmarks for jewellers to stamp onto their final products.
The director of the board thinks the new hall mark, combined with the Georgian jewellers' skills with gold, are the keys to attracting Western clients.
SOUNDBITE:
Georgian jewellery is part of our national character. Our artisans make gold and silver from birth. It's a gift from God and it's in their blood.
SUPER CAPTION: Mikhail Begiashvili, Head of the State Inspection Board for Precious Metals
The new gold is higher in colour quality and is not assigned a negative margin of error for carat value -- unlike the gold produced during the Soviet Union era.
The rush to meet international gold standards is part of Georgia's new focus on integration with Europe.
And Georgia hopes its new gold will encourage European buyers to flock to their jewellery stores starting a new gold rush.

Georgia State Parks: Our Precious Gems That We Must Protect (Part 1)
This year in American Studies we were given an assignment called the year Long Project in which the only guidline for the choice of a topic is to choose a topic that shows what it means to be an American. Because of my relationship with the Georgia state parks since I was a child and because of the terrible effect of the economy on the state parks today, I chose the Georgia state parks as my topic for my Year Long Project in order to show how important the state parks are physically and economically, show what is happening to the state parks right now in the economy that not many people know about, and to reveal how we as individuals of the state of Georgia can be good stewards of our state parks so that they will survive and thrive for future generations to come. I hope you enjoy!
