Smerwick Harbour bei Dún an Óir im irischen Kerry
Man glaubt es heute kaum noch, doch an diesem Strand am Smerwick Harbour im irischen Kerry wurden immer wieder Skelette der Opfer eines Massakers aus dem Jahre 1580 angespült. In Dún an Óir – irischen Kerry - bauten schon in der Eisenzeit Menschen eine Wallanlage, doch erst ein Massaker im Jahre 1580 brachte diesem Ort seine historische Bedeutung. Der britische General Arthur Grey und der später geadelte Sir Walter Raleigh ließen 600 Gefangene aus Spanien, Frankreich, dem Baskenland und Irland enthaupten, obwohl ihnen freies Geleit zugesagt worden war. Die Geschichte Dún an Óirs lässt bei einem Besuch innehalten, und dazu trägt auch das eindrucksvolle Denkmal von Cliodhna Cussen bei. Mögen die Ereignisse selbst fast 450 Jahre zurückliegen, so sind derartige Massaker leider in unserer Welt auch heute keine Seltenheit.
