Dungeness Recreation Area
A short drive through the Dungeness Recreation Area
Exploring Washington State | Dungeness Spit
After our adventures in Hawaii, Wild and Growing took the time to visit family in Washington State. We visited the longest sand spit in the United States! It's home to a wildlife protected area and located on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. During our time here we saw lots of cool wild life including Mergansers, a bald eagle, crustaceans, a blue heron, a seal, and lots of birds!
The entire Dungeness Spit trail trail is 6 miles to the lighthouse on the end of the spit. We only ended up walking 3 miles out. The Dungeness Spit, continues to grow 13 feet each year, as the bluffs degrade.
Besides the amazing wildlife and massive piles of driftwood we came across, we also found large amount of kelp! Kelp creates an important habitat for many sea creatures but are threatened by sea urchins who eat the roots of kelp. Sea otters protect the kelp by eating the sea urchins, their favorite meal. Learn how you can protect sea otters here:

Sands in the Hourglass. Dungeness Recreation Area.
Just one of many trips to the Dungeness Spit on the Olympic Peninsula. This is local for me, and so a nice way to escape when I need to. I did not realize the rate in which the high banks along this stretch of beach were eroding. I could not help contemplate on how fast the time in our lives passes and how fleeting the days seem to be, as well as the speed in which this planet is in decay. Much to think about during this quiet time with my camera.
I included a wide variety of shots that I have accumulated during my visits to the Dungeness Spit.
Dungeness Spit is a 6.8-mile (10.9 km) long sand spit jutting out from the northern edge of the Olympic Peninsula in northeastern Clallam County, Washington, USA, into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It is the longest natural sand spit in the United States.

Clallam County Parks - Camp David Jr
On majestic Lake Crescent, Camp David Jr. provides a beautiful setting for all types of group activities, focusing on youth groups. The grounds of the oldest county park in the state are beautifully maintained. The camp is rich in history since it was originally a health spa in the very early 1900's and much of the history is preserved on the site. Camp David Jr. has been maintained as an outdoor recreation camp since 1935.
Sitting on the veranda of the lodge overlooking the lake, you can easily imagine what it must have been like 100 years ago, when the sites original use was that of a health spa. Young people from across the western U.S. have a ball swimming, canoeing, fishing, and stone-skipping on the Olympic National Park lake. Nearby attractions include the Sol Duc and Elwha River valleys, numerous trails (including the Olympic Discovery Trail), and Lake Crescent Lodge.
The camp provides a great opportunity for a variety of youth and adult group retreats, educational camps, recreation camps, waterfront activities, family reunions and even weddings.
Camp Information

Improving Fish Habitat: a Story of Collaboration with the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe
In order to improve salmon rearing habitat in the upper Dungeness watershed the Forest Service partnered with the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe and others to complete the Dungeness Large Woody Debris project on the forest in October 2016. The team built structures that mimic how the river would naturally create jams, with logs and rocks that tumbledown stream during high flows. The log jams are designed to slow the water's velocity and allow for fine sediment and gravel to settle out which will create better salmon habitat that endangered fish need for building their nests and laying their eggs.
The Forest Service is directed by our management plan, to restore and maintain aquatic systems, and the Dungeness Large Wood Project is part of that “restore” component of that management plan. Olympic National Forrest has been collaborating on restoration activities within the Dungeness watershed for decades. The Dungeness is the home watershed of the Jamestown S'Klallam people.

Sequim lies within the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains and receives on average less than 16 inches (410 mm) of rain per year—about the same as Los Angeles, California—and has given itself the nickname of Sunny Sequim. Yet the city is fairly close to some of the wettest temperate rainforests of the contiguous United States. This climate anomaly is sometimes called the blue hole of Sequim. Fogs and cool breezes from the Juan de Fuca Strait make Sequim's environment more humid than would be expected from the low average annual precipitation. Some places have surprisingly luxuriant forests dominated by Douglas-fir and western red cedar. Black cottonwood, red alder, bigleaf maple, Pacific madrone, lodgepole pine, and Garry oak can also be large. Historically, much of the area was an open oak-studded prairie supported by somewhat excessively drained gravelly sandy loam soil, though agriculture and development of the Dungeness valley have changed this ecosystem. Most soils under Sequim have been placed in a series which is named after the city. This Sequim series is one of the few Mollisols in western Washington and its high base saturation, a characteristic of the Mollisol order, is attributed to the minimal leaching of bases caused by low annual rainfall. Over 12,000 crab pots are lost in Washington state's Puget Sound every year, costing an estimated $7
FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus016708
Over 12,000 crab pots are lost in Washington state's Puget Sound every year, costing an estimated $700,000 in lost in harvest revenue, and more poignantly, damaging the sea floor environment. Using sonar, a team of scientists and divers ventures into the waters to clean up and learn about why pots are lost.
Recreational and commercial crabbing in Washington's inland waters is a popular pastime and an important seafood industry. But thousands of crab pots are lost every year, abandoned on the sea floor. The lost pots continue to attract Dungeness and red-rock crabs for up two years, trapping them until they die. The dead crabs then attract more crabs.
Crabs are not an endangered or threatened species, so what's the issue? Scientists have estimated that up to 30-square-feet of the sea floor around a derelict crab pot is affected, depending on where the pot landed.
Research by the Northwest Straits Foundation has shown a variety of reasons behind pots getting left behind: lines attached to the pots can be cut by boats, a problem acerbated when people place pots in heavily used waterways. Badly tied knots can come undone. Pots are left in water that's too deep for the line. And sometimes, even sabotage among competing fishermen is a cause.
After using sonar to pinpoint crab pots on the sea floor, a diver plunges into the cold and dark Puget Sound waters using a rope with a weight thrown near the pot as a guide. Once the pot is found, it's tied to the rope and reeled in. The team uses divers in an attempt to minimize the impact on the sea floor. In a 2010 trip to Boundary Bay near the U.S.-Canada border, the team found over 1,000 pots in a 6-square-mile area.
