ABOUT US
Welcome to Grand Adventure, a YouTube channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, nearly always filmed in stunning 4K.
We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the western U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and our dogs Zoe and Maggie are avid boondockers, so you'll seldom find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds. Instead, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. And unlike most other RV channels on YouTube, we're not RV dealers or full-timers -- we're weekend warriors just like you!
We'll provide tips and insight on equipping and maintaining your RV, trip planning and travel videos to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

The route to Silverton aboard the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is an unforgettable journey along the spectacular Animas River. The Animas River is one of the last free-flowing rivers in the entire western United States. Silverton, Colorado, Steam Engine Locomotive arrives with guest from Durango, Colorado
While camping in Ouray Colorado we did a day trip across the Million Dollar Highway to the town of Silverton Colorado.
In this video we will be taking you to Silverton, Colorado an Old Wild West Mining Town, population 629 in 2013. Silverton is one of the highest towns in the United States, at 9,318 feet (2,836 m) above sea level. ( Silver by the Ton ) Silverton supposedly got it's name from hauling Tons of Silver from the mines around it.
First you will see the Old Narrow Gauge Railroad, Steam Engine arriving with guest from Durango, Colorado.
Then we will take you inside the Old Jail which is a museum now. I love visiting Old Jails and Prisons but there kind of Creepy to me. Message me and let me know if you feel the same.
Then we will take you on one of the best underground mining tours, which is now a Museum that you have ever seen. Two thumbs up for the town of Silverton and everyone else involved for doing such a great job at preserving the History.

Durango & Silverton Train: Heavy Snow Colorado 2-16-2010
Near Durango, Colorado operators of the historic Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad say the heavy snow has had both a positive and negative impact on business.
One conductor, who has worked on the train for the last two decades says, he's never seen this much snow in this part of Colorado.
Train operators have been using technology that is more than 100-years-old to clear all of the snow off the narrow-gauge track; it's called a flanger. It moves snow off and away from the tracks so trains can get through.
Officials say all the snow that has fallen so far has triggered avalanches that have shut down the rail line several times this season. The historic railroad runs through some of the most rugged terrain in the state and is a huge tourist attraction both in the winter and summer.
Resort operators in nearby Telluride say that mountain town has received about 170-inches of snow so far this season.
Some say the worst weather has yet to come as March and April are the snowiest months of the year for Colorado.

Videoed during a two-month long motorcycle tour across the U.S. to catch the 2017 solar eclipse in Casper, Wyoming.
After the eclipse, the Four Corners area along with the southern half of Colorado was explored.
The Train was running North along US-550 when I zipped the motorcycle ahead a mile or so, got off the bike, jumped to the track's edge, and started to video.
Very kwel!
Enjoy!

D&RGW #493 Shakedown Run Animas R. Crossing 1/28/2020
I “Chase and Pace” the rebuilt D&RGW K37 #493 on its first “Shakedown Run” to Home Ranch about 6 miles north of Durango. The Rockwood turn was cut short when it developed a hot journal on the engineer’s side trailing truck. The engine and caboose #0540 were backed a short distance and turned on the Y at the Events Center. The 493 moved under its own power for the first time in 52 years 4 days before after the D&S employees performed a multi-year, multi-million dollar rebuild and conversion to burn oil. The conversion to burn oil will reduce the risk of starting fires during extremely dry condition. The 493 was originally built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1902 as standard gauge and converted to narrow gauge in 1928 by the D&RGW Burnham Shops. The locomotive was retired by the D&RGW in 1968, 52 years ago. It was purchased and moved to the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in 1981. It sat outside on display in Silverton for 20 years.
“Just Pacing” and the Full “Shakedown Run” to follow soon.

The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is a 3 ft narrow gauge heritage railroad that operates 45.2 miles of track between Durango and Silverton, Colorado. The railway is a federally designated National Historic Landmark and is also designated by the American Society of Civil Engineers as a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
The route was originally built between 1881 and 1882, by the Denver and Rio Grande Railway, in order to carry supplies and people to and from silver and gold ore mines in the San Juan Mountains.
The line from Durango to Silverton has run continuously since 1881, although it is now a tourist and heritage line hauling passengers, and is one of the few places in the United States which has seen continuous use of steam locomotives. In March 1981, the Denver and Rio Grande Western sold the line and the D&SNG was formed.
The trains run from Durango to the Cascade Wye in the winter months and run from Durango to Silverton during the summer months. The depot in Durango was built in January 1882 and has been preserved in it’s original form.
Leaving Durango promptly at 9:45 am, the Cascade Canyon train is being pulled by engine 473 which was one of ten K-28 locomotives built by the American Locomotive Works in Schenectady, New York in 1923 for the narrow gauge D&RGW. All ten engines which were called the Sport Models, were sold to the Rio Grande Railroad. The 473 worked the narrow gauge rails in Colorado and New Mexico with her sisters 470 through 479. The 473 spent a lot of time on the Silverton line, also working Durango to Alamosa and the Chili line, which ran from Antonito, Colorado to Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Later that day, the weather has changed and snow has returned, but the train crosses the Animas River for an on time arrival back in Durango at 2:45 pm.

Durango & Silverton Railrado train ride through Durango, Colorado
In July four of us used the Durango & Silverton Railroad to gain access to the Chicago Basin via their Needleton stop near the Weminuche Wilderness in the San Juan National Forest. The ticket price, per person, was $79 plus an additional $10 to load our backpacks into the storage car.
The train ride is certainly a fun option that saved us a couple of days backpacking even though we still hiked six miles (and a few thousand feet of elevation gain) to base camp. However, the train is also resource intensive - requiring nearly 8 tons (8,000 kilograms) of coal for the roundtrip from Durango to Silverton. About 75 percent of the coal is used to get the train up hill - dumping a lot of soot on anybody (and everything) in the open cars or alongside the tracks. During the summer, when the economy is good, they average four roundtrip trains per day with up to two weeks of reservations being required. During this summer (2009), the economy was the worst it had been since the Great Depression so they were running three trains per day and we made our reservations one business day in advance...
Anyway, we had a great trip and successfully climbed the four 14ers that drain into Chicago Basin. And, while in Chicago Basin I was also able to complete Jupiter Mountain, a 13er that's one of Colorado's Centennials (the 100 highest).
Here's my personal web page about climbing 14ers:
