Driving through Mid-Hudson Bridge to Main Street, Poughkeepsie, New York, USA (2019)
Poughkeepsie (/pəˈkɪpsi/ pə-KIP-see), officially the City of Poughkeepsie, separate from the Town of Poughkeepsie, is a city in the state of New York, United States, which is the county seat of Dutchess County. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 32,736.[4] Poughkeepsie is in the Hudson Valley midway between New York City and Albany, and is part of the New York metropolitan area.[5][6] The name derives from a word in the Wappinger language, roughly U-puku-ipi-sing,[7] meaning the reed-covered lodge by the little-water place, referring to a spring or stream feeding into the Hudson River south of the present downtown area.[8]
Poughkeepsie is known as The Queen City of the Hudson. It was settled in the 17th century by the Dutch and became New York's second capital shortly after the American Revolution. It was chartered as a city in 1854. Major bridges in the city include the Walkway over the Hudson, a former railroad bridge (originally called the Poughkeepsie Bridge) which re-opened as a public walkway on October 3, 2009; and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Bridge, a major thoroughfare built in 1930 that carries U.S. Route 44 (concurrent with State Route 55) over the Hudson. The city of Poughkeepsie lies in New York's 18th congressional district.
Mid-Hudson Bridge
The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Mid-Hudson Bridge is a toll suspension bridge which carries US 44 and NY 55 across the Hudson River between Poughkeepsie and Highland in the state of New York. Governor and local resident Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wife Eleanor attended the opening ceremony on August 25, 1930. The bridge was renamed the Franklin D. Roosevelt Mid-Hudson Bridge in 1994 though the span is rarely referred to by its official name.
The bridge is 3,000 feet (910 m) long with a clearance of 135 feet (41 m) above the Hudson. At opening, it was the sixth-longest suspension bridge in the world. The chief engineer was Polish immigrant Ralph Modjeski, who had previously engineered the strengthening of the nearby Poughkeepsie Railroad bridge. Primary contractor was the American Bridge Company of Ambridge, Pennsylvania with steel from Carnegie. The span is unusual in that stiffening trusses were intentionally constructed on top of, not below, the deck.

Feeding the Hudson Valley 2016
Poughkeepsie Farm Project was thrilled to be part of this important event on October 8, 2016. Feeding the Hudson Valley took over the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park in collaboration with the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley's Walk to Fight Hunger. Hundreds of members of the public were provided a delicious free feast, sourced from fresh top-quality produce that would have been wasted.
The Hudson Valley Regional Council, Rescuing Leftover Cuisine, Dutchess Outreach, the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley Food Bank, and others promoted positive solutions to food waste right here in the Hudson Valley. While some benefit from the great bounty of fresh foods the Hudson Valley has to offer, there are many people in our region who suffer from food insecurity. This means they lack easy and regular access to quality food and may frequently go hungry. While 40 percent of food in the United States goes uneaten, 1 in 7 people struggles with hunger. Food waste in New York totals about 18% of what makes up our waste stream while across Dutchess, Orange, Putnam and Ulster counties 1 in 10 people receives Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and barely get enough to eat.
Feeding the Hudson Valley was made possible by: Hudson Valley Regional Council and Feedback with partners Dutchess County Division of Solid Waste, Rescuing Left Over Cuisine, Poughkeepsie Second Chance Foods, Inc., Dutchess Outreach, Cornell Cooperative Extension Orange County, Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency, UlsterCorps, RVGA Rondout Valley Growers Association, Family of Woodstock, Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, Poughkeepsie Farm Project, Common Ground Farm, Fishkill Farms, and EatLocalNY.

Cuomo's threat to close three prisons puts workers, communities on edge
Corrections officers and other employees at prisons around New York are wondering if Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposal to close three state prisons by Sept. 1 means the state budget axe will fall on their livelihoods.
There are seven prisons in what's known as the Sullivan Hub: Sullivan and Woodbourne correctional facilities in Sullivan County; Ulster and Eastern correctional facilities in Napanoch, and Shawangunk and Wallkill correctional facilities in Ulster County; and Otisville Correctional in Orange County.
Dutchess County is home to Fishkill, Downstate and Green Haven prisons.
Cuomo announced on Feb. 15 that he plans to close three of the state’s 54 prisons, decreasing the number of inmate beds statewide by 1,200 and saving $35 million.
In the announcement, Cuomo reiterated that prisons are not a jobs program, and that he’s proud to have closed more prisons than any other governor in history to “right-size” the state’s correctional and juvenile justice system. Cuomo has overseen the closure of 24 prisons and juvenile detention centers since taking office in 2011.
As the state’s prison population has dropped, violent offenders have become a larger percentage of inmates in custody. Among males, violent offenders rose from 77.2 percent of inmate population in maximum security and 50.8 percent of those in medium security in 2009 to 82.3 percent of the max population and 56.9 percent of the medium in 2019.
Some officials claim closing three prisons without first removing the double bunks from New York’s prisons is a recipe for disaster
According to DOCCS, “double bunking” is primarily used in dormitories or large rooms; for example, a 60-bed dorm will have 40 individual beds, with 10 double bunks along a wall to ensure unobstructed line-of-sight for correction officers.
Data from the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision show that assaults on staff at prisons statewide rose from 799 in 2017 to 973 in 2018, while inmate-on-inmate assaults rose from 2014 to a peak of 1,224 in 2017. The majority of assaults on staff occur at the state’s maximum-security prisons. “Assault” in these definitions includes events when an object is thrown at and hits another person. That includes instances when an inmate throws urine or feces that hits someone.
Cuomo said DOCCS will “carefully review” operations at all of the correctional facilities “and select up to three for closure based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to physical infrastructure, program offerings, facility security level, specialized medical and mental case, and potential reuse.” The budget amendment allows DOCCS to close the prisons on an expedited schedule.

Where's Nan Hayworth? Constituents turned away from Congresswoman Hayworth's office.
August 25, 2011, Where's Nan Hayworth! Constituents of NY19 rally at their Representative's office in Fishkill, NY. The protestors are highlighting the fact that Congresswoman Nan Hayworth has failed to hold even one town hall meeting during the August recess. Protestors arrived peacefully at the entrance to the building housing the Congresswoman's taxpayer funded office so that they can meet with the Congresswoman or her staff. The letter contained an invitation for Congresswoman Hayworth to attend a town hall meeting on Croton-on -Hudson on August, 31, 2011.** The video shows what happens at the door of the building as the constituents approached.
(** The well-attended town hall took place in Croton-on-Hudson. Sadly Congresswoman Hayworth did not attend!)
