Kansas Trip Eisenhower Museum
Around Kansas - The Dwight David Eisenhower National Memorial - October 19, 2016
(Frank) We're back again. You know, we were the 34th State, and we also have the 34th president. Isn’t that interesting? (Deb) That's a cool fact, Frank. Did you vote for him? (Frank) Well, I wasn't quite old enough yet [laughs]. Believe it or not…anyway. [Laughter] (Frank) But no, I was not old enough yet to vote for him, I was old enough to vote for his successor. (Deb) Cool, yes. (Frank) Anyway, we're talking about Dwight David Eisenhower, who of course had a brilliant military career, and then became the President of the United States. He grew up in Kansas. (Deb) He often talked about Abilene and how much it meant to him, and how much it meant to come from such a place. I can remember going out there; maybe we were on the first times I was in Abilene. I'm just looking down the tracks and thinking, This is a good place for a general, or somebody with that kind of responsibility to be from. Because that's a wonderful, quiet place you can go back to when your mind - when seems like everything is just craziness all around you. Ike is one of only a couple of people when he was president; it was like a step down from where he'd been [Laughs] as the Supreme Allied Commander. (Frank) Yes, he and Mamie actually met at - it was at the University in Lecompton. (Deb) No, that was his mother and daddy. (Frank) Well. (Deb) Nice try. [Laughter] (Frank) You mean I actually missed that? (Deb) Almost Frank, almost. (Frank) – a non-Kansan has to tell me… I do have a good story though about the Eisenhower Memorial. (Deb) That's a great story. (Frank) Let's go to it. Congress approved the Dwight D. Eisenhower National Memorial in 1999. Since then, folks from Tom Hanks to Tom Brokaw have contributed to the memorial, honoring Dwight D. Eisenhower as the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe during World War II and the 34th President of the United States. Senators Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran serve on the bi-partisan committee overseeing the project and Senator Roberts is chair. Why a memorial to Ike? Well, the committee has a lengthy list of reasons. First, Ike understood war as only a soldier could and believed the possibility of World War III, a nuclear war, would be unwinnable for mankind. He set in place a strategy for winning the Cold War that was followed and implemented by future Presidents until the collapse of the Soviet Union. He was influential in bringing World War II to an end and his efforts throughout the War, especially with the planning and execution of D-Day, stopped the Nazi war machine. He also ended the Korean War and maintained active communications with the Soviet Union during the Cold War. This Memorial will not only tell the story of the young man from Kansas who became a great soldier, a U.S. President, and a world leader, but will also reflect the story of America – humble, isolated beginnings, and a rapid ascension on the world stage. Ike's example is an inspiration that, through leadership, cooperation, and public service, we too can achieve the American dream and make a difference in the world. Eisenhower, like America, rose to the occasion with courage and integrity. Dwight D. Eisenhower´s dedicated service to his country spanned 50 years. It is appropriate that the first national presidential memorial of the 21st century will honor President Eisenhower. If there was ever a moment in our nation’s history to recognize a leader committed to both security and peace for the good of his nation and the world, now is that time. Designer Frank Gehry incorporated elements of Ike's roots in Abilene in the extensive memorial. He represents what we should all try to be, said the artist. Visit the website for more information.
GENERAL DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER 1945 VICTORY TOUR AND HOMECOMING TO ABILENE 85374
This historic, silent newsreel was made for the home market (a sound version would have been shown in theaters) shows the victory tour of Allied Supreme Commander Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower in the aftermath of V-E Day, May 8, 1945. Ike made a series of triumphant visits to London (57 seconds), Paris (1:50), Washington, D.C.(2:27) where he was re-united with his wife Mamie, New York (4:00) including Yankee Stadium (6:27), West Point (6:50), Kansas City (7:44) and finally (8:58) on June 22, 1945 Eisenhower returned to his hometown of Abilene, Kansas. The parade included members of the 1909 local high school football team (9:27) which Ike had served as running back. Eisenhower did not have much time to dilly-dally in the USA, as in November 1945, Eisenhower returned to Washington to replace Marshall as Chief of Staff of the Army. His main role at that time was rapid demobilization of millions of soldiers in the European Theater and later in Asia and around the world.

Around Kansas - Remembering Dwight D. Eisenhower - Dec. 23, 2015
(Frank) Marco the Polo Bear! (Deb) You know and one time he was coming up to to Fancy Gap, Virginia. He was going to be at Sunnyside, which is a little store there, a wonderful store. It had a little bit of everything and they got special shipments of Christmas toys in. So, Marco the Polo Bear was gonna be there. So, I was going to go meet Marco the Polo Bear. And it snowed and we couldn't go because the roads were too bad and they cancelled Marco the Polo Bear's visit because of snow. (Frank) Oh no. (Deb) I will never forget that. I must have been six or something. I was so disappointed I didn't get to meet Marco the Polo Bear. (Frank) As you know we're in the State Capitol today. And of course, Kansas was the 34th state to join the Union and the 34th President of the United States was Eisenhower, from the state of Kansas. (Deb) Well, that worked out well, didn't it? (Frank) It did. So, but you took a trip over to the Eisenhower Museum which is in Abilene. (Deb) I love the Eisenhower Museum. I love taking friends there. So, this is another great place over the winter break or whenever you have friends come to town. Take them to the Eisenhower Museum. I've also researched in the library there, which is really incredible and a phenomenal research facility. We forget Frank because you and I lived through so much of it, but kids don't even realize Ike was responsible for essentially winning World War II and freeing the world. I mean there's so many of Ike's accomplishments other than the presidency that a lot of kids aren't even aware of. So, make sure you get all the young folks over there to see the Eisenhower Museum. It's incredible. (Frank) Do you still have an I Like Ike button? (Deb) Of course I do. (Frank) Everybody has an I Like Ike button. (Deb) And my Grandfather served with Ike. He served under Ike in World War I at Gettysburg. And so when I tell people my Grandpa served with Ike in Gettysburg and they're like, boy has she got her history messed up! You know, but he really did. So, that's another facet of Ike's history you can learn about. At the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum, and Boyhood Home in Abilene, visitors can explore the extraordinary life and legacy of the only 5-Star General who became President of the United States. The Eisenhower Presidential Library is home to a world-class research facility that caters to scholars and history enthusiasts from around the world. The vast holdings of the Library consist of millions of pages of historical records and photos, thousands of feet of film footage, and tens of thousands artifacts. It is one of 13 Presidential Libraries administered by the National Archives. They preserve the documents and artifacts of our Presidents, providing insight into the times in which these Presidents lived and served the nation. The Eisenhower Museum and Boyhood Home allow visitors to explore Ike's boyhood years growing up in America's heartland, his years as military leader, and his presidency. Through December 2016,
the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum presents World War II Remembered: Leaders, Battles & Heroes, an inclusive commemoration of the pivotal events of World War II, marking the 70th anniversaries of the war. What makes this exhibit stand out from other interpretive WWII exhibits is the focus on personal stories. The exhibit strives to honor the unsung heroes and tell the lesser-known stories of the time. The accounts of such groups as the Tuskegee Airmen, Native American Code Talkers, the brave contribution of the Ritchie Boys, and the heroic stories of women at war and on the working home front are shared. Also on exhibit through December 2016, is Be Ye Men of Valour: Allies of World War II. While it was major industrial powers like the United States, England, and the Soviet Union that provided the bulk of manpower and resources, dozens of other Allies selflessly spent blood and treasure of their own to defeat the Axis powers. This exhibit explores the important victories, defeats, personalities, and causes associated with the lesser known Allied nations and resistance groups. Check the website for more information on these and
other special exhibits as well as programming. Make sure you pick up an I like Ike button while you’re in the gift shop!
