H&HT | Backpacking India: Ep3 - Jaisalmer & Udaipur
Welcome to India. We will be backpacking through India for the next six weeks, slowly making our way east and homewards to Australia.
In this episode we made our way to the most western destination on this trip - Jaisalmer. We spent two nights at Dylan's Cafe and Guesthouse split between a night under the stars in the Thar desert. Jaisalmer and it's fort has been a major highlight so far and although most people come only for the Camel Safari, you should definitely spend a little time in the city itself.
We then caught our first overnight bus to Udaipur, where we stayed for three nights. Ironically, Udaipur itself is probably one of our favourite destinations that we have visited in India with beautiful sunsets, amazing mountains/lakes and a very upscale touristy area. However; we were struck down with stomach aches and a bunch of bad luck.
We tried to make the best of it and portray Udaipur the way it deserves, but this is the reality of backpacking, not every hour in every day is peachy...and in the coming episodes, you'll see exactly what we mean.
Next episode: Agra and Orchha
Enjoy!

Nukkad Guesthouse in Udaipur was awesome (My vlog #210)
I really enjoyed my stay in the lake view room at the Nukkad Guesthouse in Udaipur. The owner Raju is very friendly and genuinely wants to help his guests make the most out of their stay in Udaipur. The only reason I'm switching rooms today is because I would like to go explore the other side of the river before I leave for Jailsalmer in a day or two (or five?)
I'm documenting my journey in a series of mini 1-2 min vlogs that share a glimpse into life on the road. You can see the full playlist at

This hotel blends modern amenities with traditional decorations. It is decorated in the traditional way of the village, which includes original walls, pillars, and arches, and all of the hotel is decorated in carved yellow stones. Our dry, dusty, desert adventure in Jaisalmer
What boy grows up not wanting to live in a fort? In Jaisalmer I got to live that little boy's dream, although it was a slightly different experience to what I imagined growing up. Jaisalmer Fort has a large residential community living within it's walls, running the shops, hotels, restaurants and tour operators running their businesses for tourists on a daily basis.
We stayed in a great little place called the Ganesh Guesthouse, and from there we explored the narrow, snaking alleyways within the fort, and begun our desert camelback odyssey. Outside the walls is the township of Jaisalmer, a dusty, dry, buzzing little town that has it's interesting sites, but on the whole isn't a special place to spend too much time.
What makes Jaisalmer so great is it's so different to most other parts of India. It's fascinating to be able to live within the fort, albeit for a short period of time, explore the desert on camelback, and roam the dirt streets of the town. It makes a nice change from the chaos that ensues in the big Indian cities, and while Jaisalmer might not be the prettiest place in the world, it makes up for it with it's own unique character.

Non Touristic Came Safari in Jaisalmer
At approximately 2 pm we will leave Jaisalmer. On the way to sand dunes we will visit Kuldhara, an abandoned village. We will then proceed to the camel point, take the camels and ride into the desert. After a sunset dinner, you will relax on the dunes next to a camp fire (weather permitting) and you will sleep overnight in the desert underneath the stars. The next morning after breakfast you have the option of going on another camel ride. We will return to Jaisalmer at around 10 am.
You can use facility of storing the luggage during the safari and as well shower facility before and after the trip. We do have restaurant where you can enjoy the delicious food.
Surviving on faith (My vlog #215)
I've had a pretty unnerving time getting to this remote location in west India and now I'm getting into this jeep and heading to the center of Jaisalmer where I will find a cheap guesthouse and some semblance of safety. I gotta admit, I'm pretty overwhelmed right now and clinging onto my faith that I'm being protected and everything will be ok. And then the back of the jeep flew open.

Arrived the first night in the sand dunes (My vlog #221)
I'm feeling so peaceful this evening. After a long day riding through the Thar desert we have arrived at our campsite for the night. I love how there is no one else around, it's just us and the sand and the sky.
This is the first night of our two nights in the desert.
