Schriever Familiar Sites - The calm after the rain
Iconic symbols of Schriever Louisiana, a small town built around sugar cane. The overpass is a major artery for those traveling between Houma and Thibodaux. It stands thru hurricanes and even direct strikes from a derailed train. I know very little of the plantation home at the foot of the bridge, but it stands in glory. Beauty from a time forgotten.

SUMMARY
=======
The Colfax massacre, or Colfax riot as the events are termed on the 1950 state historic marker, occurred on Easter Sunday, April 13, 1873, in Colfax, Louisiana, the seat of Grant Parish, when approximately 150 black men were murdered by white Southerners. The bloodiest single instance of racial carnage in the Reconstruction era, the Colfax massacre was an example of the lengths to which some opponents of Reconstruction would go to regain their accustomed authority. Among blacks, the incident was long remembered as proof that in any large confrontation, they stood at a fatal disadvantage.In the wake of the contested 1872 election for governor of Louisiana and local offices, a group of white Democrats armed with rifles and a small cannon, overpowered Republican freedmen and state militia (also black) occupying the Grant Parish courthouse in Colfax. Most of the freedmen were killed after they surrendered; nearly 50 were killed later that night after being held as prisoners for several hours. Estimates of the number of dead have varied, ranging from 62 to 153; three whites died but the number of black victims was difficult to determine because bodies had been thrown into the river or removed for burial. There were rumors of mass graves at the site.
Historian Eric Foner described the massacre as the worst instance of racial violence during Reconstruction. In Louisiana, it had the highest fatalities of any of the numerous violent events following the disputed gubernatorial contest in 1872 between Republicans and Democrats. Foner wrote, ...every election [in Louisiana] between 1868 and 1876 was marked by rampant violence and pervasive fraud. Although the Fusionist-dominated state returning board, which ruled on vote validity, initially declared John McEnery and his Democratic slate the winners, the board eventually split, with a faction declaring Republican William P. Kellogg the victor. A Republican federal judge in New Orleans ruled that the Republican-majority legislature be seated.Federal prosecution and conviction of a few perpetrators at Colfax under the Enforcement Acts was appealed to the Supreme Court. In a key case, the court ruled in United States v. Cruikshank (1876) that protections of the Fourteenth Amendment did not apply to the actions of individuals, but only to the actions of state governments. After this ruling, the federal government could no longer use the Enforcement Act of 1870 to prosecute actions by paramilitary groups such as the White League, which had chapters forming across Louisiana beginning in 1874. Intimidation and black voter suppression by such paramilitary groups were instrumental to the Democratic Party regaining political control in the state legislature by the late 1870s.
In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, historians have paid renewed attention to the events at Colfax and the resulting Supreme Court case, and their meaning in American history.

SUMMARY
=======
Edward Douglass White Jr. (November 3, 1845 – May 19, 1921), American politician and jurist, was a United States Senator and the ninth Chief Justice of the United States. He served on the Supreme Court of the United States from 1894 to 1921. He is best known for formulating the Rule of Reason standard of antitrust law.
Born in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, White practiced law in New Orleans after graduating from the University of Louisiana. His father, Edward Douglass White Sr., was the 10th Governor of Louisiana and a Whig Congressman. White fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War, and was captured in 1865. After the war, White won election to the Louisiana State Senate and served on the Louisiana Supreme Court. As a member of the Democratic Party, White represented Louisiana in the United States Senate from 1891 to 1894.
In 1894, President Grover Cleveland appointed White as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. In 1910, President William Howard Taft elevated him to the position of Chief Justice. The appointment surprised many contemporaries, as Taft was a member of the Republican Party. White served as Chief Justice until his death in 1921, when he was succeeded by Taft.
He was generally a conservative member of the court. He sided with the Supreme Court majority in Plessy v. Ferguson, which upheld the legality of state segregation to provide separate but equal public facilities in the United States, despite protections of the Fourteenth Amendment to equal protection of the laws. In one of several challenges to Southern states' grandfather clauses, used to disfranchise African-American voters at the turn of the century, he wrote for a unanimous court in Guinn v. United States, which struck down many Southern states' grandfather clauses. He also wrote the opinion in the Selective Draft Law Cases, which upheld the constitutionality of conscription.

Nicholls Softball vs. SLU - Game 1
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team picked up wins in completely different ways in Friday night's doubleheader against Southeastern Louisiana, starting with a run-rule 9-1 victory before finishing the sweep with a dramatic 4-3 walk-off win at the Colonel Softball Complex.
With the two wins, the Colonels improve to 21-11 overall, 7-1 in Southland play and 9-0 at home. Nicholls will go for the sweep against Southeastern (14-17, 3-5 SLC) Saturday at noon.
Game 1 – Nicholls 9, Southeastern Louisiana 1 (5 inn.)
The Colonels pushed across all nine runs in the first three innings and Megan Landry held the Lady Lions to a lone run in the fifth as Nicholls run-ruled SLU, 9-1.
Nicholls had just seven hits in the win, but were able to take advantage of three Southeastern errors. Jessica Taylor and Brooke Morris led the offense with two hits each, with Taylor driving in a team-high three runs.
Landry (11-5) pitched all five inning and struck out four. Kalyn Watts hit a solo homer in the fifth inning to prevent Landry's fourth shutout of the season.
The Colonels pounded out four hits in the first inning, with three going for extra bases. Morris singled and moved to third on an Amanda Gianelloni double, and both runners scored on a double from Kasey Frederick. Taylor capped the scoring with triple to right center for the 3-0 lead.
In the second, Taylor came through again with a 2-run single to center. Nicholls then added three in the third after SLU committed three errors.
