Swapped Prisoners Welcomed at Kiev Airport by Ukraine President Zelenskiy
▶️ In footage from the Ukrainian presidency, former prisoners arrive at Kyiv's international airport, Sunday, December 29, where they are welcomed by relatives and the country's president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Ukraine and Russia-backed separatists exchanged 200 prisoners, swapping detained fighters for civilians and servicemen held captive in some cases for years in two breakaway regions.
???? It marks the second major prisoner exchange involving Ukrainians caught up in the conflict in four months.
Kyiv handed over to separatists five riot policemen suspected of killing protesters during a pro-Western uprising in 2014 as part of the swap, sparking public outrage.
The mutual release of the detainees has ended, the Ukrainian presidential office said in a statement on Facebook, specifying that Kyiv received 76 captives.
Separatist officials said the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics took in a total of 124.
Later the Ukrainian presidency published the list of Ukrainians freed from captivity, which included 12 military personnel and 64 civilians.
Two journalists who contributed to the Ukrainian service of the U.S.-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Stanyslav Aseyev and Oleg Galazyuk, were also freed by rebels.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron hailed the swap as positive.
The notion of an all-for-all prisoner exchange gained momentum during peace talks in Paris on December 9 among the so-called Normandy Four -- Ukraine, Russia, France, and Germany -- trying to bring an end to the five-year conflict.
Russia insists it is not a party to the conflict, despite significant evidence that includes communication with separatist leaders, captured Russians, and Russian casualties in the fighting.
The conflict in the region known as the Donbas is one of the biggest challenges facing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who campaigned on a vow to end the conflict.
The United States and European Union have imposed sanctions on Russia for its support of the separatists in eastern Ukraine and for the seizure and annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region. (AFP / RFE / RL Ukrainian Service)

Ukraine: Right Sector scuffles with mayor of eastern city
Mayor of the eastern Ukrainian city of Poltava Oleksandr Mamay was detained following scuffles with demonstrators at City Hall on Friday, according to deputy head of the City Police Department George Karpichenko.
Violence flared between the mayor and demonstrators who blocked the exit of a room where a city council meeting should have taken place. After the mayor's first attempt to exit the room was blocked by Right Sector member Vladimir Vovk, who said was hit by Mamay, the mayor tried another exit, which was again blocked by a demonstrator. Mamay called for the help of security guards to force the exit, which led the way for the clashes to start. Mamay was then taken to a police station.

Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, voted in favour of adopting a draft law on the Ukrainian language, in Kiev on Thursday.
The law would reportedly result in the mandatory use of the Ukrainian language by state agencies, as well as by professionals including doctors and teachers.
A total of 278 MPs voted in favour of the bill, while 38 voted against. Outgoing Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko is expected to sign the vote into law.

Ukraine's Unpredictable Presidential Elections
On 21 April, Ukrainians headed to the polls to elect a new president in a second round of elections. Out of a record 39 candidates, the election came down to a two-horse race between incumbent President Petro Poroshenko and the eventual winner, comedian Volodymyr Zelenskiy - an anti-establishment political novice who plays a fictional president in a popular TV series.
A week on from the election results, the panellists analyse the results, what insights they provide about voter sentiment in the country and how they impact relations between Ukraine, Russia and the EU moving forward.
How willing and able will the new president be to tackle corruption and pass the sweeping economic reforms expected by voters? At what pace is the new government likely to pursue European integration and membership of NATO, if at all?
And how will the winning candidate approach the deadlocked conflict between Ukrainian troops and Russian-backed separatists in the east of the country?

German Chancellor Merkel, Ukrainian President Zelenskiy Welcomed in Paris for Peace Talks
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy arrived at the Elysée Palace in Paris, Monday, December 9, for talks with French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
–––––––––
READ MORE: Five years after Kremlin-backed separatists seized power in Ukraine's Donbas region, leaders of France, Germany, Russia and Ukraine are meeting in Paris in a bid to revive efforts for a peaceful resolution to a conflict that's left more than 13,000 civilians and combatants dead and 30,000 wounded.
Hopes of a possible breakthrough had been boosted by recent withdrawals of rival troops from some key frontline positions and a prisoner exchange between the Russians and Ukrainians. France's Emmanuel Macron, who is hosting the Paris talks, the first direct negotiations in three years over the Donbas, is keen to break the impasse and so, too, is Ukraine's new president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
But there's mounting anxiety in Ukraine that the rookie president, a former television comedian, will be be out-maneuvered in the Paris talks by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has since the conflict broke out only agreed to stuttering talks and at times his position appeared to be stronger than Kyiv's.

Austrian Airlines flight from Ukraine to Austria travel vlog (Lviv - Vienna - Innsbruck - Kitzbühel) Video Transcript:
good morning. It is a travel day. Today we are leaving Ukraine and flying to Austria.
Austria! Visiting for the 1st time. Yes. And we've wanted to visit Austria for ages. Especially me because my Grandfather was from Austria and yeah I've never been. Yeah.
After all of these years of traveling so it is going to be a lot of fun. Um we've just finished packing and our Airbnb host is actually about to knock any minute. Anyways, 2 flights to the airport. Two flights today. Two flights. So we'll see you guys in a bit.
Made it the airport here in Lviv (Lviv Danylo Halytskyi International Airport). Made it to the airport.
Very modern. Kind of fancy. It is quite new. I think it has only been open for a four or five years.
But one of the cool things is we are flying with Austrian Airlines for the first time. First time.
The very first time. So it is always exciting to fly with a new airline.
It sounds like our flight to Vienna maybe delayed they said. Yeah. We won't make our connection. Which would be very very uncool because we have such a tight connection. Yeah. Only less than 30 minutes and the thing too is uh a little behind the scenes is we are actually going to a conference and we're going to be filming it. So we are the people that are going to be in charge of filming the conference so for us to be late would not be cool. Haha. But it is out of our hands so yeah. Fingers crossed though.
Anyways, we haven't told you guys why we're going to Austria. Yeah, I guess we should talk about that. So every year there is one travel related conference that we attend and that is the Social Travel Summit. Last year it was held in Scotland and this year it is in Kitzbuehel in Austria so that is where we're going. We're flying to Vienna, Innsbruck and then taking a bus or like some kind of shuttle. Yes, exactly.
Okay Sam what are you most looking forward to at STS? At STS the Social Travel Summit. Well, actually I'm most looking forward to just meeting up with my buddies. We have a lot of friends in the industry. Seeing his friends.
Quick update. We're in Vienna (Vienna International Airport) and we have like a 3 hour layover now because we missed our original flight.
Final flight. We have to scan ourselves in. What did you just say to me? We're the last ones on the plane. Haha. We were so distracted playing on our phones they boarded so quietly. Yeah. Well, it must be I have a feeling it is a really small flight.
Oh my gosh. Look at the leg room. Look at the leg room. Das bestes . We have what? Why Das bestes ? We have exit seats.
And best of all? That is a closeup. Woah. Woah woah.
And best of all it is only a 40 minute flight.
So we've arrived at last. At long last. We're exhausted. Long day. It is almost midnight I think. Yeah, we're exhausted and I have nothing to say. I just want to go to bed. So we're going to end it here and we'll see you guys next time. Ciao.

Poroshenko and Zelensky arrive for presidential debate
Ukrainian presidential candidates Petro Poroshenko and Volodymyr Zelensky arrive at Kiev's Olympic stadium for a debate ahead of the presidential runoff. Some 60,000 spectators are expected to attend the first and only policy head-to-head of the campaign. IMAGES of the candidates arriving at the stadium
Unclear whether Russia will recognize Ukraine election results
Moscow will be watching the results of Ukraine's election closely. Russia is accused of supporting separatists in Ukraine's east and seizing Kiev's naval vessels. No pro-Russia candidate stands a chance of competing.

Ukraine Gambling Clampdown: Interior Minister targets illegal gambling venues
In a post on his Facebook page Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov has pledged to close down gambling establishments such as casinos, which he said were harbouring criminality.
Avakov said that he was instructing police to immediately begin forcing gambling businesses in Kyiv to close and then the rest of the country would follow suit.
However, any gambling businesses in Ukraine’s Crimea will continue as Russia annexed the peninsula in March. In fact while Ukraine may close its casinos, Russia’s Putin is on a gambling splurge.
