Roadtrip through Charleston, West Virginia | The Local Palate
Presented by The Local Palate, the premier magazine of southern food culture.
The Local Palate traveled to West Virginia to explore the unique culinary scene and cultural eats of this Southern mountain state. The journey began in the capital city of Charleston and continued on through Morgantown and Fayetteville, with necessary off-the-beaten-path stops along the way. In Charleston we dined in the East End neighborhood at the historic Bluegrass Kitchen and tried traditional West Virginia fare at the pool-hall turned restaurant, The Grill. We traveled up the winding curves of Bridge Road to dine at the contemporary restaurant South Hill Market & Cafe, tried chocolates, coffee, and handcut slabs of meat at the notable Capital Market, and winded down at Lola's Pizza for baked pies and sangria. Enjoy part one of West Virginia journey and follow us as we eat our way through beautiful Charleston, West Virginia.

A Visit to Charleston Town Center (Feat. Macy's)
Charleston Town Center. On the surface, it seems to be holding its own quite well for a downtown mall. However, as we dig deeper, it seems to be living on borrowed time more than anything else. Let's step inside, and see what the Charleston Town Center is all about.

Charleston Beautiful on the Kanawha
On Thursday, August 16, 2018, Charlie Cooper and Billy Joe Peyton presented “Charleston Beautiful on the Kanawha” in the Archives and History Library at the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston.
The 1932 film Charleston Beautiful on the Kanawha was found when the Kearse Theater was torn down in 1982. Discovered in the projection booth of the palatial first-run house, this rare community movie was made at the dawn of the sound era in motion pictures. Charlie Cooper, who has recorded sound for many movies, discussed the film’s director Blundon Wills, a native Charlestonian, and the technology used to make the film through the showing of selected scenes. Charleston native Billy Joe Peyton, a history professor who has used Charleston Beautiful on the Kanawha in teaching his classes, added his reflections on Charleston locations shown in the historic film.
Charlie Cooper, a local radio producer and disc jockey known as Super-Duper Charlie Cooper, was named to the West Virginia Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2007. Billy Joe Peyton teaches history at West Virginia State University and is an author and authority on Charleston.

A day in Charleston, WV
The other day my girlfriend and I went for a quick trip to the downtown Charleston area. It's really great to see all the older homes and other sites around where the State Capital building is. Got a nice surprise on our walk when we ran across the gravesite for Thomas Bullitt who was the first owner of the land that is now know as Charleston, Wv. I hope you enjoy as you join us in our trip around the town. :D
