Hermann Park is a 445-acre (180-hectare) urban park in Houston, Texas, situated at the southern end of the Museum District. The park is located immediately north of the Texas Medical Center and Brays Bayou, east of Rice University, and slightly west of the Third Ward. Hermann Park is home to numerous cultural institutions including the Houston Zoo, Miller Outdoor Theatre, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and the Hermann Park Golf Course, which became one of the first desegregated public golf courses in the United States in 1954. The park also features a large reflecting pool, numerous gardens, picnic areas, and McGovern Lake, an 8-acre (32,000 m2) recreational lake.[2]

The Baker Family Legacy
Few Houstonians have played as critical a role in national and international matters as James A. Baker III, our nation's 61st secretary of state. Secretary Baker led the United States in foreign affairs at a pivotal moment in history -- the peaceful end of the Cold War.
His service is unique, having held senior positions for three U.S. presidents: secretary of state under George H.W. Bush, secretary of the treasury under Ronald Reagan and undersecretary of commerce under Gerald Ford.
After retiring from public service, Secretary Baker established the James A. Baker Institute for Public Policy at Rice University in 1993. Today the institute is one of the leading nonpartisan think tanks for public policy in the country.
To commemorate his place on the world stage and his relationship with his home city, his statue sits in downtown Houston across Buffalo Bayou from Bush Monument. The statue is open year-round without charge.
Chas Fagan sculpted the statue for Baker Common, which recognizes Secretary Baker and his distinguished forebears: Judge James A. Baker, Captain James A. Baker and his father, James A. Baker Jr. The monument was dedicated in October 2010.
Visitors approaching on foot will find the stately green space in Sesquicentennial Park, on the east bank of Buffalo Bayou across Preston Street from the rear of Wortham Center in downtown Houston. Motorists can park at metered spaces nearby or in Theater District parking garages.

The biggest and third biggest cities in Texas, which is impressive, because everything is bigger in Texas. To say there is a rivalry between the two iconic cities is an understatement.
They are 240 miles, or 386 km apart. About 3 and a half hour drive. And yeah, both are huge.
In fact, with around 2.4 million people, Houston is the 4th largest city in the United States. With 1.4 million people, Dallas is the 9th largest. Houston actually is the biggest city in the country by total area. I know, I know. Dallas is part of the 4th largest metro area in the country (7.6 million). I mean, it’s close to Fort Worth and Arlington. Their metro is also known as DFW, or simply The Metroplex. Houston’s metro area is 5th (7 million). And for the rest of this video, I will give you statistics based on their metros areas, unless I state otherwise, mmk?
First of all, Dallas has a lower population density.
Ok next, so apparently there are these rankings by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network that look at global cities. While it considers both Dallas and Houston global cities, Houston is ranked Alpha - and Dallas is ranked at Beta +. Have fun with that in the comments.
Houston is a short drive from the ocean. More specifically, the Gulf of Mexico or even more specifically, Galveston Bay. It’s a Gulf Coast city. Dallas is...uh...a longer drive from the ocean. It’s at the edge of the Great Plains, and you’re not going to see as many palm trees there.
Due to this, Dallas gets more tornadoes and Houston gets more hurricanes. Dallas is at the southern end of what’s known as Tornado Alley, where tornadoes are more common. Dallas has been directly hit by tornadoes multiple times in its history. Houston has been hit by hurricanes multiple times. Most recently, in 2017 Hurricane Harvey caused parts of Houston to flood. Flooding is actually a regularly occurring problem in Houston, but not in Dallas as they’ve figured out a way to tame the mighty Trinity River, for the most part. Related to this...Houston is sinking. Literally. Dallas is not.

Rounds of rainfall to escalate flood concerns in eastern US this week
This past weekend's rainstorm was only the start of an abnormally wet pattern that will elevate the flood risk in the eastern United States into the end of the month.
The rainstorm drenched northern Virginia and Maryland with 3-7 inches of rain on Saturday and Saturday night, which triggered flash flooding, stranded vehicles and prompted water rescues and road closures.
Baltimore smashed a 131-year-old rainfall record on July 21 as 4.79 inches fell. The previous record from 1887 was 2.76 inches.
In the days following this rainstorm, residents should not expect a return of the dry weather that graced the region during the second half of last week.
“A cycle of daily rounds of showers and thunderstorms is likely to repeat on most days this week,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Kyle Elliott said.
A stream of moisture from the tropical regions of the Atlantic Ocean will be directed at the East Coast for much of the week, leading to days of downpours, travel delays and ruined outdoor plans.
Rainfall amounts are likely to run well above normal during this time frame, according to Elliott.
On average, most areas in the Northeast pick up 3-4 inches of rainfall during the month of July. However, some places in the mid-Atlantic have already received two times these amounts during the first three weeks of the month.
The pattern this week can lead to additional localized totals of 5-10 inches somewhere in the corridor between the central Appalachian Mountains to the coasts of the mid-Atlantic and North Carolina, AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski said.
Amounts on the upper end of that range are most likely along the eastern slopes of the mountains, she said.
Further rainfall will struggle to soak into ground that is already saturated, heightening the risk of flash flooding, rising streams and rivers that can overflow their banks and road washouts and closures.
“The pattern may escalate into a serious flood threat for some communities this week,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said.
In addition to flooding, mudslides can be triggered in the mountains. People with plans to camp or hike along the mountain range will need to keep close tabs on the weather situation this week.
There is also a risk of tree damage as a few of the thunderstorms can produce strong winds. Trees sitting in extremely wet soil can topple more easily than when it is drier.
Motorists may face slower travel times on the roadways as a result of the downpours.
Airline passengers traveling into and out of the major East Coast hubs should be prepared to face an uptick in weather-related delays.
Despite the setbacks, the pattern may completely wipe out the pockets of abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions from the Carolinas to New England.
“While the pattern may not bring rain every day everywhere, people may get frustrated by the frequency of showers and thunderstorms as far as outdoor plans, sporting events and construction projects are concerned,” Sosnowski said.
After a damp start to the week, a wedge of dry air set to overtake eastern New England on Tuesday and Wednesday is expected to keep the region drier than most locations in the Northeast.
Downpours will take aim farther west from the Carolinas to New York state on these days.
Late in the week, enough dry air may envelop the aforementioned corridor to limit the amount of downpours compared to days earlier in the week, while also pushing the heaviest rain into New England.
AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok expects the wetter-than-normal pattern to continue for much of the East right into the start of August.
The unfolding wet pattern may not only cause more daily rainfall records to fall, but this month can end as one of the top 10 wettest Julys on record in some communities. This includes Washington, D.C., and Baltimore.

CHAPTER 01 Julia Ideson Building, Houston Metropolitan Research Center
Located in downtown Houston, across from City Hall, is the Julia Ideson Building of the Houston Public Library, a beautiful Spanish-Renaissance style building that holds one of the largest collections of Texas history in the state.
One focal point of the historic building is the Houston Metropolitan Research Center which is the premiere repository of Houston history. Housed in the building are extensive photographic collections depicting the history of Houston, the African American Collection, one of the finest Latin American Collections in the nation, valuable rare books, as well as large murals and original oil paintings.
Surrounded by large oak trees and landscaped courtyards, the Julia Ideson Building itself is one of the most significant architectural landmarks in Houston.

Researchers use historic maps to better understand and document the settlement and development of early Texas.
Texas impresario Stephen F. Austin compiled a map of his colony in 1830. That map shows the first Anglo settlements in Texas, which was a part of Mexico at the time. His first colony had 300 settlers.
News paper publisher Gail Borden designed the original plat of the new town of Houston, and the same street grid now forms downtown Houston. Yes, it is the same Borden of Borden's Milk fame.
The town of Harrisburg, along Buffalo Bayou, was established in 1826 by John Richardson Harris, one of Stephen F. Austin's original 300 Anglo American colonists, and the man for whom Harris County (Texas) is named. Mexican troops under the leadership of Gen. Santa Anna burned the town in 1836 during the Texas Revolution. The town of Harrisburg is now a part of Houston and is the located in Houston's historic East End.
The first railroad in Texas began operating from Harrisburg in 1852. An 1880 map shows how the railroads fanned out in all directions from Houston.
