In this 45th episode, we visit Grand Canyon National Park. Enjoy the ride with us! ;)
Grand Canyon National Park, located in northwestern Arizona, is the 15th site in the United States to have been named a national park. The park's central feature is the Grand Canyon, a gorge of the Colorado River, which is often considered one of the Wonders of the World. The park, which covers 1,217,262 acres (1,901.972 sq mi; 4,926.08 km2) of unincorporated area in Coconino and Mohave counties, received more than six million recreational visitors in 2017, which is the second highest count of all American national parks after Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Grand Canyon was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979.
Grand Canyon was officially designated a national park on February 26, 1919, though the landmark had been well known to Americans for over thirty years prior. In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt visited the site and said: The Grand Canyon fills me with awe. It is beyond comparison—beyond description; absolutely unparalleled through-out the wide world... Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity and loveliness. You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is to keep it for your children, your children's children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see.
Despite Roosevelt's enthusiasm and strong interest in preserving land for public use, the Grand Canyon was not immediately designated as a national park. The first bill to establish Grand Canyon National Park was introduced in 1882 by then-Senator Benjamin Harrison, which would have established Grand Canyon as the second national park in the United States after Yellowstone. Harrison unsuccessfully reintroduced his bill in 1883 and 1886; after his election to the presidency, he established the Grand Canyon Forest Reserve in 1893. Theodore Roosevelt created the Grand Canyon Game Preserve by proclamation on 28 November 1906, and the Grand Canyon National Monument in 1908. Further Senate bills to establish the site as a national park were introduced and defeated in 1910 and 1911, before the Grand Canyon National Park Act was finally signed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919. The National Park Service, established in 1916, assumed administration of the park.
The creation of the park was an early success of the conservation movement. Its national park status may have helped thwart proposals to dam the Colorado River within its boundaries. (Later, the Glen Canyon Dam would be built upriver.) In 1975, the former Marble Canyon National Monument, which followed the Colorado River northeast from the Grand Canyon to Lee's Ferry, was made part of Grand Canyon National Park. In 1979, UNESCO declared the park a World Heritage Site.
In 2010, Grand Canyon National Park was honored with its own coin under the America the Beautiful Quarters program.
The Grand Canyon, including its extensive system of tributary canyons, is valued for its combination of size, depth, and exposed layers of colorful rocks dating back to Precambrian times. The canyon itself was created by the incision of the Colorado River and its tributaries after the Colorado Plateau was uplifted, causing the Colorado River system to develop along its present path.
The primary public areas of the park are the North and South Rims, and adjacent areas of the canyon itself. The rest of the park is extremely rugged and remote, although many places are accessible by pack trail and backcountry roads.
The park headquarters are at Grand Canyon Village, not far from the south entrance to the park, near one of the most popular viewpoints.
The North Rim is a smaller, more remote area with less tourist activity. It is accessed by Arizona State Route 67.
The South Rim is more accessible than the North Rim; most visitors to the park come to the South Rim, arriving on Arizona State Route 64. The highway enters the park through the South Entrance, near Tusayan, Arizona, and heads eastward, leaving the park through the East Entrance. Interstate 40 provides access to the area from the south. From the north, U.S. Route 89 connects Utah, Colorado, and the North Rim to the South Rim.

Time Lapse Driving Tour of Grand Canyon National Park, AZ
The video follows this route:
This time lapse video was shot at Grand Canyon National Park Arizona, along East Rim Drive / U.S. 180 / AZ 64 on July 27th 2011 during a cross country road trip. We parked in the new Lot #1 (Yellow / Raven) and were just a few steps from the canyon rim.
We arrived at the park early and spent the cool overcast morning at the South Rim Visitor Center and walked along the rim until it cleared up and got hot. Next we headed East on E. Rim Drive stopping twice before continuing to Desert View. After visiting the Watch Tower we returned West on E. Rim Drive stopping at all the view points along the way to photograph the canyon at sunset.

Video taken on June 29, 2009 from the top of East Rim of the Grand Canyon. The view from the East Rim looks down the Canyon, not across it as does the South Rim. The music in the background was from Deno's album, Praise 3.
This video was taken while on a trip down Route 66 from Georgia. We pulled a 19 ft Scamp ECO with an appropriately named GMC CANYON.

Ive heard many things about experiencing the Grand Canyon and the surrounding areas and how it will change you. Although there are stressful factors in my life, i feel, how can i say? pure. I feel great. The air is so different than the east coast. Certainly nothing like a populated city.
First stop was Phoenix. After flying in from Jacksonville and Houston, my friend and I immediately in great need of food. So the first stop was an In n Out Burger joint in Tempe, Az. Ive had this before back in 05' but I cant recall the deliciousness of the food. After i dropped of my car in Jax, i forgot my warm gear considering the desert gets down to 30 degrees while phoenix stays warm. My friend and i checked out a few shops. We didnt stay too long since we had a short time limit for our whole trip. From there we quickly drove right into Downtown and right out onto I17 north toward Flagstaff stopping at Montezuma Castle and Sedona for the red rocks scenery.
Next Day we took a long drive through Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and driving through the Monument Valley in Utah .
And for day three we took a day trip to the south rim of the breathtaking Grand Canyon. Stop at all points east of the main entrance. Yes i sat on the edge several times as much as i told myself i wouldnt. It was necessary. :) Taking the drive toward Cameron and back south to Flagstaff we came across a smaller Canyon area along the way where I was able to yell and hear my echo 5 times over. It was the most amazing experience ever just like in the movies.
Every person should visit the Grand Canyon at least once in there life time, including other desert activities. Overall my Arizona trip was beyond a success and I am glad I had someone with me to enjoy the memorable experience.

In my trip, we drove a total of 5800 miles, through nine states, crossing WA, ID, MT, WY, UT, CO, AZ, NV and CA. We explored world wonders, magnificent, beyond beauty America's great west National Parks, cities and country. I think the best National Park is Yellowstone National Park, then Grand Canyon and Zion National Park. Yellowstone National Park covers a vast area, with mountains and water and lakes, waterfalls, rivers, mountains snow and glaciers. Also rare things such as hot springs, hot mud fountains and wildlife. Compare to China's top tourist spots such as Huangshan(Yellow Mountain), Jiuzhaigou are small, nice and pretty, but too crowded. Speaking of China, this time in Salt Lake City, and the Grand Canyon I saw group after group of Chinese tourists, speaking loud Mandarin, there with high-end cameras. These Chinese people are really rich. I often felt that in some places was cursory, not enough time. I think that as long as I can still drive, run, and hike, I will go again.
The summary of the following experiences, travel necessities are car GPS unit, iPhone and iPad. Smart phones usually have no service in most of the national parks. However, when you drive near a city or town, iPhone/iPad will have some data signal. I use it to book a hotel for the night of online. Generally it's available for a discount price. Summers in North America, daylight is as long as 16 hours. That means one day is equal two days for your travel and sightseeing. On I-90, or US 287, 89 freeway, most of the area has no cars, looking straight for miles away. It's very easy to speed. You can drive more than 100 mi/hr. If you drive a US made car, speed excess of 90 miles, feels like you are taking off. So, must reduce speed even in the slow curved road. I first visited Las Vegas casino more than two decades ago, and have not been ever since. The city is just like China mainland, all changed today. The ultra-luxury hotel Wynn and Trump tower was available for us for a night. Las Vegas is a sin, and a very fun city. With food, drink, prostitute, gamble, drama and acrobat circus, I forget all hardships of life. Relax and day dream until the fire like hot wind burn my face, and then wake me up from my daydream. Fortunately I did not lose money yet. In the Los Angeles area, food and labor is much cheaper when compared with Hawaii. At Disneyland, I rode the roller coaster with my son. It makes me feel like back to my childhood. World of Color, is light, water, color, music, and with 3D videos. It was exciting and wonderful. You have to experience it in person so that you can appreciate it more. I also drove to Silicon Valley to look at my daughter's friends, two Stanford, and two Carnegie Mellon young grads, plus one dog become entrepreneurs and startup a new software company. In just about 3 months received investments from Peter Thiel and Andreessen Horowitz for their startup money and has just moved into a new office building. They eat, drink, sleep, play, and live in the office. Young spirit is strong and valuable.
I only finished editing some of the videos, and many more are to come.
