4 THINGS TO DO IN MONTANA
Have you ever visited Montana? These are a few of my FAVORITE things to do during the wintertime when family comes into town.
Recently, my dad and sister flew to Big Sky for a weekend vacation - with only a few days to soak up the views, watch to find out what we did!
What are other things we should do + see while in Montana? Tell us in the comments below! We'd love to hear from you. :)
1.) Fuel up in Big Sky, Montana - We grabbed lunch at the Hungry Moose Market in the main town center of Big Sky.
- This tiny market has super fresh ingredients, tasty baked goods, smoothies, and delicious coffee. You can even grab a few snacks to-go from their deli + grocery store.
- They have two locations in Big Sky which you can learn about here:
- Also, you can literally fuel up your car + camper at Big Sky! There are two gas stations in town which make a great pit stop on the way to your next destination.
2.) Rent Snowshoes - Snowshoeing is a fun way to pass the time during the winter months in Montana.
- Pack a backpack with water, rent a pair of snowshoes, wear sunblock + a hat, and enjoy the great outdoors.
- Our snowshoes were ~$5 per day at East Slope Outdoors in Big Sky, Montana. Visit their website here:
- Just remember to check that they work properly before heading out on your wintertime adventure!
- We hiked the Bighorn Pass Trail in between Big Sky and West Yellowstone: Bring bear spray if it's late spring!
3.) Drive Through Yellowstone - We drove through Gardiner, Montana and entered Yellowstone National Park from the northern entrance. It's a great place to enter the park because you can actually drive through the Roosevelt Arch, see a thermal feature right away (Mammoth Hot Spring), and work your way over to Lamar Valley where animals are known to gather. We spotted bison, elk, deer, and more!
- Watch my other winter road trip to Yellowstone National Park:
4.) Ski Big Sky Resort - My dad was a beginner skiier and did the bunny hill the entire day. During the 2016/2017 winter season, I worked at Big Sky Resort all winter long and skiied most of the mountain!

About Me: Last year, I fell in love with skiing and picked up a part-time seasonal job at a Montana Ski Resort for the Winter 2016/2017 season. Prior to moving to Montana, I lived in NYC for five years and worked at a large advertising and marketing agency. Originally from Florida, living near the Rocky Mountains has been an incredible opportunity. Throughout the winter, I'll be documenting my experience working at a ski resort and also as a freelance marketing consultant. Thanks for following along! PS - I learned how to ski a year ago at 28 years old. :)

Fly Fishing in Glacier National Park
We brought a fly rod along on our family vacation to Glacier National Park and had several opportunities to do some fishing in multiple regions of the park. Not only did we get to experience some of the beautiful scenery of the Rocky Mountains but also caught several fish, including some native west-slope cutthroats! This was a trip I will never forget. Hope you enjoy the video!

Our day trip to the top of Volcano Etna Sicily Italy
Info from Wikipedia:
Mount Etna (Italian: Etna, Sicilian: Mungibeddu or a Muntagna, Latin:Aetna) is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, Italy, in theProvince of Catania, between Messina and Catania. It lies above the convergent plate margin between the African Plate and the Eurasian Plate. It is the tallest active volcano on the European continent, currently 3,329 m (10,922 ft) high, though this varies with summit eruptions.Etna covers an area of 1,190 km2 (459 sq mi) with a basal circumference of 140 km. In Greek Mythology, the deadly monster Typhonwas trapped under this mountain by Zeus, the god of the sky and thunder and king of gods, and the forges of Hephaestus were said to also be located underneath it.
Mount Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is in an almost constant state of activity. Due to its history of recent activity and nearby population, Mount Etna has been designated a Decade Volcano by the United Nations.[4] In June 2013, it was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Eruptions of Etna follow a variety of patterns. Most occur at the summit, where there are currently (as of 2008)five distinct craters—the Northeast Crater, the Voragine, the Bocca Nuova, and the Southeast Crater Complex (2). Other eruptions occur on the flanks, which have more than 300 vents ranging in size from small holes in the ground to large craters hundreds of metres across. Summit eruptions can be highly explosive and spectacular, but rarely threaten the inhabited areas around the volcano. In contrast, flank eruptions can occur down to a few hundred metres altitude, close to or even well within the inhabited areas. Numerous villages and small towns lie around or on cones of past flank eruptions.
Climbing West Butte, Sweet Grass Hills, Montana USA 2015
The Sweet Grass Hills (Blackfoot: kátoyissiksi, Cheyenne: vé'ho'ôhtsévóse, Salish: ččaɫalqn , three peaks are a small group of low mountains rising more than 3,000 feet above the surrounding plains southwest of Whitlash, Montana in Liberty and Toole County, Montana. The tallest point in the hills is West Butte at 6,983 feet (2,128 m). Quite prominent in the local area, they are clearly visible from US Highway 2 to the south and can sometimes be seen as far north as the Crowsnest Highway (Highway 3) near Medicine Hat in Alberta. Other named peaks in the small group are Gold Butte (6,512 feet), East Butte (with two peaks, the taller of which at 6,958 ft), and Mount Lebanon (5807 ft). The Sweet Grass Hills are an example of the island ranges that dot the central third portion of the state of Montana. These island ranges, completely surrounded by the 'sea' of plains and not geographically (or often geologically) part of the Rocky Mountains to the west, are biological hotspots, containing more species than the prairie below.
Formation and natural features[
The Sweetgrass Hills as seen from Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park in Canada.
The hills were formed in the early Paleogene period, and geologically are known as stocks - intrusive igneous rock forced up from below and solidified. Because of uplift and erosion, the overlying rock formations have disappeared. The upper slopes of the hills have not been glaciated and would have stood above the ice sheet that covered the area during the last ice age. Since the Sweet Grass Hills are at a higher elevation than the surrounding prairie, temperatures are cooler and precipitation is higher. Forested areas, consisting mainly of Douglas fir, are therefore able to grow on the hills' slopes.
Oakzanita Peak - Peak #27 - A Hike through the Snow
Detailed trip reports at
A series of heavy storms have hit San Diego since my trip up Sheephead Mountain. The storms dumped a lot of water and, in higher elevations, a lot of snow. I was in Mount Laguna yesterday and saw what looked like a light dusting of snow on the Cuyamaca area. I wasn't expecting it to be nearly 12 in places.
Robb (The SoCalPeakbagger) drove all the way from Thousand Oaks and we headed for the trail head. We were the only people there and we noticed a stream was running briskly along the road. This is a fairly popular trail, specifically for mountain bikers, so I was expecting the trail to be broken already, if there was any snow at all. We saw some snow here and there with a lot of mud showing through.
Not too long on the trail, and we were presented with a view of Oakzanita Peak, named for the oaks and manzanita growing on its slopes. As we ascended, the snow got deeper and the mud went away completely. We saw a lot of tracks in the snow that belongs to deer, raccoon, turkeys, bobcat, rabbits and what looked to me to be a very large mountain lion.
It was a great feeling to know that we were the first people up here since the storms. Virgin snow was all around us, and except for the signs of wildlife, we were the only people in sight for miles. The snow got deeper and the lack of a packed trail soon got us weary, but the beauty of the area fueled our spirits.
The trail wraps around to the other side of the mountain, even though, according to Robb's GPS, we were within 800' of the summit at one point, but hiked over a mile longer before we reached the summit. On the east side of the mountain, we came upon the lower part of the East Mesa in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. It was flat and white and covered with snow.
We began our final ascent of the mountain and the snow got deeper. We passed some empty bike racks near the peak and hurried to the top, where we were greeted with chilly gusts of wind and a panoramic view of the area blanketed with snow.
We looked around a bit, poking with our trekking poles, but we could not find the summit register. From our perch, we could see Cuyamaca Peak, Middle Peak, Stonewall Peak, Toro Peak, Garnet Peak, Monument Peak, Sheephead Mountain, Corte Madera, El Cajon Mountain (El Capitan) and many others.
As our feet, cheeks and fingertips got colder, we took our pictures refueled and headed back down the mountain, not seeing a soul until we reached the trailhead.
America's 50 Most Exclusive Neighborhoods
The stately suburb of Mountain Brook located southeast of Birmingham boasts abooming—but pricey—real estate market. The median house value is $543,700 in town's ritzy neighborhood of Mountain Brook Village / Glencoe but million-dollar properties like this idyllic ivy-clad abode are a common sight.
Although a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, Anchorage's high cost of living makes ittricky for average residents to make ends meet. With a median home value of $446,000, the town's Seward Highway / Potter Valley Road neighborhood is no exception.
The median real estate price of $1,740,502 in the close-knit 13,922-person town of Paradise Valley is rich even for the likes of its wealthy residents, who earn $102,815 per capita. In the culturally and linguistically diverse Cinco Soles neighborhood, where nearly 10 percent of residents speak Spanish in addition to English, Latin influences can be seen everywhere, including this Spanish mission-style abode with prime views of Camelback Mountain.Related:The 19 Most Photographed Homes in America
This little college town is home to more residents who work in the computing and math sectors than in 95 percent of locales in the country. The wealthiest of these professionals put down roots in the Ampersand Street / North Pierce Street neighborhood where the median house value is $318,300.
Move over, 90210—the most expensive zip code in California is in Atherton, a hard-charging bayside town located between San Francisco and San Jose. The Menlo College / El Camino Real neighborhood has a jaw-dropping median house value of $6,177,000.
Just three miles from the world-famous Telluride Ski Resort, it's no surprise that Mountain Village is twice as expensive as the average American city. Sky-high real estate prices—the median house value is $905,600—may be a small price to pay for the breathtaking mountain views and pristine slopes.
Twenty-two percent of Greenwich's residents were born in another country, but the 377-year-old coastal city is rich in more than simply cultural diversity. The Belle Haven neighborhood has a median real estate price of $2,594,704 and is wealthier than 99.8 percent of the country.
The shipyards of Wilmington made it a magnet for military serviceman during the Second World War, but now this town attracts executives and professionals of all trades with its thriving economy. The affluent Greenville neighborhood in the northwest corner of the city has a lower rate of crime than surrounding Wilmington, as well as a median house value of $729,700.
The Sunshine State continues to be a hot spot for retirees, but you'll need an extra-large nest egg to settle in the affluent island town of Boca Grande. The high cost of home ownership—the median home value is $1,313,600—may be well worth the investment since local homeowners have enjoyed a roughly 5.6 percent annual increase in real estate value in recent years.
The abundance of colleges and universities in the Atlanta metropolitan area contributes to a large population of college students in the artsy capital city, but the Northside Drive Northwest / Mount Paran Road Northwest neighborhood is more likely to draw retirees and high-earning professionals because of its median home price of $933,550. The north Atlanta neighborhood consists mainly of homes built between 1970 and 1999, along with afair few handsome mansionsbuilt more recently, like this nine-year-old house with a saltwater pool.Related:18 American Towns Every Old-House Lover Needs to See
What's theprice of living in paradise? If you dwell in Kaalawai in eastern Honolulu, budget at least $1,295,400, which is the median home value in the area.
When it comes to the title of most expensive city in Idaho, the victor is well, Victor. The town of 1,961 has a median home value of $349,500, yet you'll find the rare million-dollar property like this five-bedroom mountain lodge.
The 2,555-person village of Kenilworth may be small, but its per-capita income of $97,738 cannot be overlooked. While this local six-bedroom English-style manor rings up at nearly at $3.2 million, the median home price rings up at a lower—but still impressive—$1,984,134.
From fireworks on the Fourth of July to an activity-packed fall festival, there's never a dull moment in Zionsville. But depending on which neighborhood you choose to reside, you could pay a steep price to enjoy family-friendly attractions year-round.
The second-largest city in Iowa also contains the most expensive neighborhood. The Linn Junction / New Buffalo neighborhood has a median home value $274,900, which is relatively modest and speaks to the low average cost of living in the Hawkeye State.
Elegant yet modern homes like this million-dollar stone-and-stucco sanctuary make this southern suburb of Kansas City a magnet for those with uncompromising tastes. While the median home value is $457,200, that price is not out of reach for the residents of the West 119th Street / State Line Road neighborhood, whose incomes put it

Big Pine Road (Death Valley Road)
Big Pine Road (Death Valley Road) north from the North Highway to the Crater Mine. September 30, 2017.
see my trip southbound during a rare summer monsoon in 2011 here
Information below.. I wanted to let the scenery speak for itself in this one, and eliminate the camera and wind noises so i found some music that fit the scene... this is close to the type of stuff we listen to out there but you may want to mute the sound and play your own music.
It is over 125 miles between gas stations. About 50 from a gas station to the Big Pine Road turnoff inside the Park. BE CERTAIN of your vehicle and the weather. While I have traversed this route in fairly hot weather, when it is over 115 we stick to the paved highways. I had badly wanted to ride this way on my motorcycle a month earlier but had to cancel that idea when the temps hit over 120F. Fortunately on this trip it was only mid 90s.
We'll take the North highway (Scotty's Castle Road) north to the Ubehebe Road turnoff and then onto Big Pine Road..
The 30 miles between Ubehebe Crater Road and Crater Mine is dirt. About 5 miles of pavement down the west slope of the Last Chance Range into Eureka Valley, then 10 more miles of dirt across Eureka Valley before reaching the pavement that takes you over the Inyo Mountains to Big Pine.
While the road is rough, and a bit sandy in spots it is Not particularly challenging for 4x4s and without any major features, so very few people use it. Experienced drivers in 2wd vehicles with some clearance will find this road Rough but easily traversed. The Road is often closed due to being washed out by flash floods, check with Park Rangers for current conditions. NOTE Scotty's Castle itself is closed, the Road is Not!!
Driving Rental Cars on dirt roads is often a violation of your rental agreement be Careful and Beware help may not arrive for day or longer if you get stuck out here.
BE PREPARED with 2 days food and water.
Depending on what map you look at or who you ask, this road can have different names.
If you are heading South, it's Death Valley Road- if you are heading north as we are on this trip, it is called Big Pine Road... Parts of the north end have also been referred to as Lorreta Mine Road, and one tiny section sometimes reads as being a continuation of Wacoba-Saline Road. The North Highway is also known as Scotty's Castle Road.
Here are some notes about specific scenes in the video, you can click on the times to skip ahead...
2:06 3 motorcycles passed us on their way south, now we see them heading along the base of Tin Mountain towards The Racetrack, a remote playa. They were the only vehicles we saw on Big Pine Road. Tin Mountain will dominate the view south for most of the road.
Our elevation at the start of the video is just below 2000 ft, we'll climb slowly to about 3200ft at Crankshaft Crossing and then up another 1500ft or so to the Crater Mine Area.
2:26 We can see the sandy evidence of Death Valley Wash running the length of the Valley.. the wash itself carves through the center out of sight
2:36 Noticed this shiny object while reviewing the video. Probably mining equipment.
4:33 Main east fork of Death Valley Wash. Large storms can cause water to flow the entire length of Death Valley.
5:15 smaller east fork of Death Valley Wash
5:45 tarantula. I did also catch a glimpse of a coyote but couldn't catch it on video.
6:15 Crankshaft Crossing. The fork east is a Very Rough 4x4 road to Gold Point, Nevada which is essentially a ghost town.. Many more miles to any services.
7:35 Overlook Views
8:19 Hanging Rock Canyon
End at Crater Mine area. The Crater is a good distance behind this tailings pile. After this it got dark and we head over to Eureka Dunes area.
Music by Stellardrone, mixed (poorly) by me, tracklist below..

I found this music so fitting for the road that i donated $15 per album for full quality downloads this guy is very generous you are even allowed to monetize and not owe him anything!

5 Top-Rated Ski Resorts in New Hampshire, USA
New Hampshire's White Mountains include the tallest peaks in the northeastern United States, and the elevation, plus the northern latitude, assures plenty of natural snow. Early and late in the season, and to tide over the occasional winter thaw, state-of-the-art snowmaking and grooming equipment keeps the trails and slopes in A-1 condition all winter. Not all New Hampshire's ski mountains are in the northern part of the state. Two excellent ski resorts are in the mid-state Lakes Region, and two other good-sized mountains are close to the Massachusetts line in the south. Here five ski resorts in new Hampshire, United States.
1. Cranmore Mountain and North Conway
2. Bretton Woods
