=======
The Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge is a 1,127-acre (4.56 km2) wildlife refuge located in Northampton County, Virginia, at the southern end of the Eastern Shore and near the tip of the Delmarva Peninsula. It is managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.The refuge was established in 1984; much of its land was previously part of Fort John Custis, a base used by the United States Air Force until 1981. Also within the refuge's boundaries is Fisherman Island, classed as a Wetland of International Importance. The refuge is an important staging area for migratory birds, and is used as well for the management and study of endangered species such as the northeastern beach tiger beetle and piping plover.

Hawkwatch at Kiptopeke on Virginia's Eastern Shore
In the opening aerial scene of this video, you can view the migratory route taken by 14 recorded species of raptors over the bottleneck of land that funnels the birds toward the Hawkwatch platform. There, CVWO biologists record information that is shared internationally with science data bases like HawkCount.org.
In this video, you will hear from CVWO's Hawkwatch educator Julia Magill and biologist Anna Stunkel about the threats raptors face resulting in endangered populations, the significance of CVWO's research at Kiptopeke, and the public education program at the Hawkwatch platform.
Since 1977, CVWO has conducted raptor research during fall migration at Kiptopeke State Park located on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Over this time, raptor populations have declined due to habitat loss and pesticides, as well as other factors. CVWO's research contributes to international data bases, scientific insight, and preservation of these magnificent birds of prey.

Monarch Migration on Virginia's Eastern Shore
For the past 21 years, the Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory has researched and documented monarch butterflies during fall migration at Kiptopeke State Park and the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge. During this same time the North American monarch population plunged 80% due to pesticides and habitat loss. CVWO's research is provided to international science databases and contributes to the monarch's survival.
In this video you will hear from Michael Ferrara, CVWO's monarch biologist, who will share insights into the unique geographic feature of the peninsula of the Eastern Shore of Virginia and how this super highway for monarch and raptor migration provides tremendous opportunities for CVWO, scientists and the public to encounter the butterfly and hawk migration in the fall.
Feel free to join CVWO biologists on the Hawk Watch platform to learn more about these research and educational projects. Please also visit our website at vawildliferesearch.org to support our nonprofit work, follow us on social media and subscribe to our newsletter.

Hiking Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve, Western Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia
Miles and miles of pristine, undeveloped shore line, and nobody around but me!
Hughlett Point State Natural Area Preserve is located on Virginia's Northern Neck, in Northumberland County, near the town of Kilmarnock and on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. This is a small preserve, just a little over 200 acres, that lies on a tiny peninsula called Hughlett Neck. The highest elevations in the preserve are below 10 feet above sea level, so it's mostly flat terrain. There is some upland type forest on the property, featuring pines mixed with a few hardwoods, as well as some areas of wetland forest and tidal marshes. The area is an excellent bird watching site, and is known for Bald Eagles and Ospreys, and numerous water fowl and ocean birds. There is also a population of rare insects living on the beach here. There are two trails in the preserve, the Winter Water Trail which leads you through the upland forest section to connect you to the Bay Shore Trail. The Bay Shore Trail runs north-south through the preserve, with a spur trail to North Beach and another spur to a marsh overlook. The Bay Shore Trail ends on a beach just a half mile north of the peninsula's point. A hike along the beach offers excellent views of the marshes, Dividing Creek, and the Chesapeake Bay. As evidenced by the large number of footprints on the beach, the area appears to be frequently visited; however, I was lucky enough to have the entire preserve all to myself on my visit. Please be sure to thumbs up this video, and share it with your family and friends. Leave a comment down below, I appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
