Die Zisterzienserabtei Eberbach wurde 1136 vom Heiligen Bernhard de Clairvaux gegründet und gilt als eines der wichtigsten Baudenkmäler aus romanisch-frühgotischer Zeit in Hessen. Wirtschaftlich durch den Weinbau sehr erfolgreich, entfernte es sich in den folgenden Jahrhunderten immer stärker von den Idealen seines Gründers. Nach der Säkularisierung 1803 wurden die Gebäude lange Zeit als Gefängnis und als Irrenanstalt benutzt. Heute ist die Abtei Weinbaudomäne und in hessischem Staatsbesitz, eine Stiftung kümmert sich um den Erhalt der Gebäude. In der Abteikirche finden Konzertveranstaltungen statt. 1985/86 wurden hier viele Innenaufnahmen die Romanverfilmung von Umberto Ecos Der Name der Rose mit Sean Connery gedreht.

The Eberbach abbey, an ancient Cistercian monastery, was founded by Bernard de Clairvaux in 1136 and is one of the most important architectural monuments from the Romanesque / early Gothic period in Hesse. Economically very important because of the viniculture, it deviated more and more from the ideals of its founder. After the secularization it became a prison and a lunatic asylum. Today it is a vinicultural state demesne of Hesse, a foundation is responsible for the maintenance of the buildings. In the abbey church, concerts take place. In winter 1985/86, many interior scenes for the film The Name of the Rose, based on the novel written by Umberto Eco and directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud and with Sean Connery in the leading role, were shot there.

En el año 1136, San Bernardo de Claraval fundó el monasterio cisterciense de Eberbach, uno de los monumentos más importantes del estilo románico y gótico primario en Hesse. Económicamente tuvo mucho éxito por la viticultura, pero se alejó cada vez más de los ideales de su fundador durante los siglos siguientes. Después de la secularización en el 1803 se usó el monasterio como cárcel y manicomio por mucho tiempo. Hoy en día es una finca estatal vitivinícola de Hesse y una fundación está encargada del mantenimiento de los edificios. Conciertos tienen lugar en la iglesia abacial. En el inivierno de 1985/1986 se rodaron muchas escenas interiores de la adapción cinematográfica de la novela El nombre de la rosa de Umberto Eco.

Kvalitetsproducenten Kloster Eberbach från tyska Rheingau har en otrolig historia som tog sin början redan 1136. Kloster Eberbach är en mycket stor producent men med den ovanliga kombinationen att deras toppviner kan mätas med vilken topproducent som helst från Rheingau.
Vinerna från Kloster Eberbach är utmärkta gastronomiviner där kombinationerna endast begränsas av fantasin. Tillsammans med Bouchard Pére & Fils har Kloster Eberbach världens största vinbibliotek med årgångar som går tillbaka till 1706. Vingårdarna är vackert belägna i de branta sydsluttningarna ner mot floden Rhen, ett område som är känt för att kunna producera några av världens bästa rieslingviner. Trots att Rheingau bara omfattar 3 % av den totala tyska vinodlingsarealen måste det betraktas som den historiskt mest betydelsefulla regionen i landet. Sägnen gör gällande att Karl den Store (742-814) anlade områdets första vingårdar och år 1136 anlände cisterciensermunkar utskickade från moderklostret i Bourgogne och byggde upp Kloster Eberbach. Det finns även en svensk anknytning då munkarna 1631 flyr det 30-åriga kriget och svenska trupper under Axel Oxenstierna bor i klostret.
