The Econlockhatchee River, known as the Econ to locals, is the second largest tributary of the St. John's River and runs 36 miles through Orange and Seminole Counties. It is designated as an Outstanding Florida Waterway, making it singled out for preservation by the state. The Econ is one of the last unspoiled rivers in Florida, and it is constantly at the center of controversy between environmentalists and developers. 19 miles of the river between SR 419 in Oviedo and the St. Johns River is designated as a state paddling trail for canoes and kayaks. Get a bird's eye view of Little Big Econ State Forest in Orlando, Florida. I took to the sky with my DJI Phantom 3 Professional out to this beautiful, 10,279 acre forest to get some stunning footage.
History:
The Little Big Econ State Forest was established on March 24th, 1994 by the state Legislature. The forest's unusual name comes from combining the names of the little and larger Econlockhatchee Rivers.
The Muskogee word Econlockhatchee translates literally to earth-mound stream, and means the river of many mounds. Long ago, Native Americans named the river for the multitude of man-made earthen mounds along the waterway.
The forest had many uses throughout its time. It was used for forestry, turpentine, agriculture, and cattle grazing. The Florida East Coast Railway even passed through the forest.
Forestry:
The Florida Forest Service's mission is to protect and manage the forest resources of Florida, ensuring that they are available for future generations. The Florida Forest Service manages more than one million acres of state forests for multiple public uses including timber, recreation, and wildlife habitat.
The role of forestry at the Little Big Econ State Forest is to restore and maintain native ecosystems, protect and manage species of plants and animals, protect archaeological and historical sites and practice sustainable forest management activities.
The use of prescribed fire by the Florida Forest Service is an effective tool to improve forest health, improve ecological functions and wildlife habitat. Prescribed fire is applied to mimic natural fires and helps to reduce the hazard of wildfires.
Natural Resources:
The Little Big Econ State Forest is located in the eastern portion of Seminole County, covers approximately 10,279 acres and is less than one hour drive from Orlando.
The forest provides a crucial source of protection for wetlands and associated natural communities within the floodplains of both the Econlockhatchee and St. Johns River. With 20 miles of river that flow through the forest it is important to protect the quality and health of the rivers and its wetlands. Other natural communities include wet prairie, pine flatwoods, sandhill, and scrub.
The natural communities found on the forest support a variety of wildlife which includes: alligator, Sherman's fox squirrel, gopher tortoise, gopher frog, bald eagle, sandhill crane, and wood stork.
Recreation:
Little Bit Econ State Forest is open during daylight hours for visitors to enjoy picnicking, canoeing, hiking, bicycling, fishing, wildlife viewing, and horseback riding. Access to Little Big Econ State Forest's trails is available at three trailheads: Barr Street (hiking), Snowhill Road (horseback riding), and Jones East (bicycle). Overnight camping is allowed by obtaining a State Forest Use Permit available at the Little Big Econ State Forest office.
The Kolokee trail and the horseback riding trails are included in the Florida Forest Service's Trailwalker and Trailtrotter Programs. Participants in these programs are rewarded after hiking/horseback riding a number of designated trails.
The Kilbee and Yarborough Tracts of the Little Big Econ State Forest are open for hunting and are Wildlife Management Areas managed cooperatively with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Econlockhatchee River Paddle and Camp - Huge Alligator!
For this adventure, we paddled an 8 mile section (County Road 419 to Snow Hill Road) of the Econlockhatchee River, in the Little Big Econ State Forest. We hammock camped near the Florida National Scenic Hiking Trail about halfway. There was plenty of Wildlife to be seen and heard, including Owls, Coyotes, Raccoons, and of course, alligators!

Econlockhatchee River
It's great to hike along the Econlockhatchee River in Little Big Econ State Forest. This was around sunset along the Florida Trail and a large part of the hike takes you along these river bluffs.
Orlando's Little Econ Greenway
This is a tour of the Little Econlockhatchee River as it flows through the Little Econ Greenway in southeastern Orlando. It was taken by a dji Phantom 2 Vision + quadcopter. The quadcopter was hand flown for most of the video. A couple of parts were taken using waypoints. The total distance is 3.9 miles, but it was filmed in legs of shorter length.
Econlockhatchee Sandhills Conservation Area
Hiking trail at Econlockhatchee Sandhills Conservation Area in Orlando, FL. The trail runs about 3.1 miles. A short section of the trail runs under power lines, but mostly among pine and oak trees. After I finished the hike, I was told that if you follow the power lines instead of the trail, you will end up at the Econ River and some good scenery.
There is plenty of parking space available at the trailhead.
I would call this a family friendly walking trail; bicycles are allowed, but the lack of tree roots to dodge and some soft sand probably won't attract many bike riders.
Econlockhatchee River East 2016
The river flows north from its source, Lake Conlin, through the Econlockhatchee River Swamp (see below) south of State Road 528. Near the City of Oviedo, the tributary Little Econlockhatchee River joins, and the river turns east as it flows through the Little Big Econ State Forest. The Econlockhatchee joins the St. Johns River near Puzzle Lake. The river's floodplain is forested for its entire length.
