For forty-three years of his adult life, Edgar Cayce demonstrated the uncanny ability to put himself into some kind of self-induced sleep state by lying down on a couch, closing his eyes, and folding his hands over his stomach. This state of relaxation and meditation enabled him to place his mind in contact with all time and space. From this state he could respond to questions as diverse as, What are the secrets of the universe? to How can I remove a wart? His responses to these questions came to be called readings and contain insights so valuable that even to this day individuals have found practical help for everything from maintaining a well-balanced diet and improving human relationships to overcoming life-threatening illnesses and experiencing a closer walk with God.
Though Cayce died more than half a century ago, the timeliness of the material in the readings is evidenced by approximately one dozen biographies and more than 300 titles that discuss various aspects of this man's life and work. These books contain a corpus of information so valuable that even Edgar Cayce himself might have hesitated to predict their impact on the latter part of the twentieth century. Sixty years ago who could have known that terms such as meditation, akashic records, spiritual growth, auras, soul mates, and holism would become household words to hundreds of thousands? Further details about his life and work are explored in such classic works as There Is a River (1942) by Thomas Sugrue, The Sleeping Prophet (1967) by Jess Stearn, Many Mansions (1950) by Gina Cerminara, and Edgar Cayce-An American Prophet (2000) by Sidney Kirkpatrick.
Daily for over forty years of his adult life, Cayce would lie down on a couch with his hands folded over his stomach and allow himself to enter a self-induced sleep state. Then, provided with the name and location of an individual anywhere in the world he would speak in a normal voice and give answers to any questions about that person that he was asked. These answers, which came to be called readings were written down by a stenographer, who kept one copy on file and sent another to the person who had requested the information.
Today on file at the Association for Research and Enlightenment, Inc. (A.R.E.), in Virginia Beach, Virginia, are copies of more than 14,000 of Edgar Cayce's readings. These are available to the public and have been filed along with any follow-up reports received from the individuals who had asked for the readings. This material represents the most massive collection of psychic information ever obtained from a single source. The organization founded by Cayce in 1931 to document, research and disseminate his information has grown from a few hundred supporters at the time of Cayce's death in 1945 to one which is worldwide. Countless individuals have been touched by the life work of this man who was raised a simple farm boy and yet became one of the most versatile and credible psychics the world has ever known. In addition to the Cayce readings, the organization makes available a large collection of Edgar Cayce books, New Age books, Self-Help books and Metaphysical Books.
In the field of psychology, he has often been compared to Carl Jung. In the realm of education, he stands with Rudlolf Steiner. Dr. Richard H. Drummond, one of the world's most renowned theological scholars, called the Cayce information on spirituality the finest devotional material of the 20th century.
In history, the Cayce readings gave insights into Judaism that were verified a decade after his death. In world affairs, he saw the collapse of communism nearly fifty years before it happened. Even in the field of physics, a professor and fellow of the American Physical Society theorized a connection between the elementary-particle theory and the way in which Edgar Cayce received his information. Repeatedly, science and history have validated concepts and ideas explored in Cayce's psychic information. The wealth of these insights has resulted in hundreds of books that explore various aspects of this man's life and work, not to mention foreign translations around the globe.
The Sleeping Prophet, Edgar Cayce
Edgar Cayce has been called the “sleeping prophet,” the “father of holistic medicine,” and the most documented psychic of the 20th century. For more than 40 years of his adult life, Cayce gave psychic “readings” to thousands of seekers while in an unconscious state, diagnosing illnesses and revealing lives lived in the past and prophecies yet to come. But who, exactly, was Edgar Cayce?
Cayce was born on a farm in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, in 1877, and his psychic abilities began to appear as early as his childhood. He was able to see and talk to his late grandfather’s spirit, and often played with “imaginary friends” whom he said were spirits on the other side. He also displayed an uncanny ability to memorize the pages of a book simply by sleeping on it. These gifts labeled the young Cayce as strange, but all Cayce really wanted was to help others, especially children.
Receive Free Magazine 2011Later in life, Cayce would find that he had the ability to put himself into a sleep-like state by lying down on a couch, closing his eyes, and folding his hands over his stomach. In this state of relaxation and meditation, he was able to place his mind in contact with all time and space — the universal consciousness, also known as the super-conscious mind. From there, he could respond to questions as broad as, “What are the secrets of the universe?” and “What is my purpose in life?” to as specific as, “What can I do to help my arthritis?” and “How were the pyramids of Egypt built? His responses to these questions came to be called “readings,” and their insights offer practical help and advice to individuals even today.
Many people are surprised to learn that Edgar Cayce was a devoted churchgoer and Sunday school teacher. At a young age, Cayce vowed to read the Bible for every year of his life, and at the time of his death in 1945, he had accomplished this task. Perhaps the readings said it best, when asked how to become psychic, Cayce’s advice was to become more spiritual.
Although Cayce died more than 60 years ago, the timeliness of the material in the readings — with subjects like discovering your mission in life, developing your intuition, exploring ancient mysteries, and taking responsibility for your health — is evidenced by the hundreds of books that have been written on the various aspects of this work as well as the dozen or so titles focusing on Cayce’s life itself. Together, these books contain information so valuable that even Edgar Cayce himself might have hesitated to predict their impact on the contemporary world. In 1945, the year of his passing, who could have known that terms such as “meditation,” “Akashic records,” “spiritual growth,” “auras,” “soul mates,” and “holistic health” would become household words to millions?
The majority of Edgar Cayce’s readings deal with holistic health and the treatment of illness. As it was at the time Cayce was giving readings, still today, individuals from all walks of life and belief receive physical relief from illnesses or ailments through information given in the readings — some readings were given as far back as 100 years ago! Yet, although best known for this material, the sleeping Cayce did not seem to be limited to concerns about the physical body. In fact, in their entirety, the readings discuss an astonishing 10,000 different topics. This vast array of subject matter can be narrowed down into a smaller group of topics that, when compiled together, deal with the following five categories: (1) Health-Related Information; (2) Philosophy and Reincarnation; (3) Dreams and Dream Interpretation; (4) ESP and Psychic Phenomena; and (5) Spiritual Growth, Meditation, and Prayer.
Further details of Cayce’s life and work are explored in the classic book, There Is a River (1942), by Thomas Sugrue, available in hardback, paperback, or audio book versions.
Members of Edgar Cayce’s Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.), the nonprofit founded by Cayce in 1931, have access to the entire set of 14,306 readings in a database residing in the member-only section of our Web site. The readings can also be found in their entirety in our on-site library, located at our headquarters in Virginia Beach and open to the public daily. Edgar Cayce is America’s preeminent psychic. He was here from 1877 – 1945. He left behind a body of knowledge for anyone to partake of. The knowledge is contained in readings that have a 70%-80% accuracy rate. This knowledge is housed by the Association of Research and Enlightenment in Virginia Beach, VA. Unearthing the Treasures from the Vault, Episode 1
Episode 1 of a mini-series from Edgar Cayce's A.R.E. and the Edgar Cayce Foundation
The Edgar Cayce Foundation moved into its state-of-the-art location in the Don and Nancy de Laski Education Center at Edgar Cayce's A.R.E. in Virginia Beach in the fall of 2012. We now have a huge storage area for the wealth of information that continues to grow. This area is called The Vault.
Put on your white gloves, and let's take a tour of The Vault. The video tour is hosted by Sidney Kirkpatrick, author of the definitive biography of Cayce, Edgar Cayce: An American Prophet. During the research phase of writing his book, Kirkpatrick was given complete access to Edgar Cayce's correspondence, and even spent one night locked inside the Vault!
Episode 1 is an introduction to A.R.E. headquarters and the first look into the new vault.
In the upcoming episodes of the video, we'll peek inside the vault and gain new insight into the work of Edgar Cayce. You'll explore photographs from the archives, see some of the earliest recorded readings (Series 134), meet Charles Dillman, the first patient at the new Cayce Hospital, read the Black Books that held the suggestions to put Mr. Cayce into trance, see gemstones often recommended for their vibratory nature, and even find a screen play written for actress Gloria Swanson. We'll also pull out old inventions that were created with instructions from Cayce's trance readings.

Edgar Cayce
Edgar Cayce (/ˈkeɪsiː/; March 18, 1877 – January 3, 1945) was an American mysticist who allegedly possessed the ability to answer questions on subjects as varied as healing, reincarnation, wars, Atlantis and future events while in a trance. These answers came to be known as life readings of the entity and were usually delivered to individuals while Cayce was hypnotized. This ability gave him the nickname The Sleeping Prophet. Cayce founded a nonprofit organization, the Association for Research and Enlightenment that included a hospital and a university.
He is credited as being the father of holistic medicine and the most documented psychic of the 20th century. Hundreds of books have been written about him and his life readings for individuals. Though Cayce himself was a member of the Disciples of Christ and lived before the emergence of the New Age Movement, some consider him the true founder and a principal source of its most characteristic beliefs.

CCBB: Peter Woodbury - Synchronicity and Edgar Cayce
Peter Woodbury, MSW was born into a unique family. Both his parents were born outside the continental United States (France & Puerto Rico), and were non-native English speakers (French & Spanish). They were also both Catholics, psychiatrists and interested in metaphysics! The predominant metaphysical influence came from Peter’s great grandmother, doña Chere. Doña Chere was 100 years old when Peter was born and lived to be 107. In today’s parlance, she would be called a medium. As a boy, Peter loved to spend time with his great-grandmother, who had “imaginary friends” just like her did. Doña Chere was the inspiration for Peter’s life-long interest in the unseen dimensions.
Peter’s family was also a camping family. At the age of six, he camped with his family in a Land Rover, from Paris thru the Middle East, across North Africa to the Rock of Gibraltar, thru Spain and back to Paris. A year later, Peter’s family went to Mali this time, hiked to the Dogon tribe and participated in an initiation ceremony that occurs every 60 years, called a Sigi. Peter is considering going to the next Sigi! Peter continues his love of travel and leads spiritually based tours around the world.
Peter attended Harvard University and majored in psychology. After a brief stint acting, Peter attended Boston University School of Social Work where he earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work. Peter had a successful career in the Boston area as a psychotherapist. He was also on the faculty of Boston University, teaching counseling, and eventually Atlantic University, teaching regression hypnosis.
Peter learned about Edgar Cayce while in college, became more involved after graduate school and 15 years ago moved to Virginia Beach to become part of the Edgar Cayce organization, The Association for Research & Enlightenment. He is one of the major teachers for the organization. He teaches both Life Coaching and Past-Life Hypnosis Regression at the center. He travels the country and world teaching on behalf of the Cayce work. Next year, he will be teaching in both China and Australia.
Peter is one of the world’s most prolific regressionists, having conducted close to 5000 regressions, about 350 a year. He studied with Brian Weiss, MD and Daniel Brown, PhD. He is working on a book on his technique titled, Soul Contact. He leads individuals “beyond the veil” so to speak, to experience the soul realms where an individual can experience a past-life regression, but also much much more.
