Another beautiful summer day exploring Egmont Key, above and below the surface!!! After checking out the reef which is actually part of an old Fort, we headed to the island to enjoy the beach and check out the island!!
History of Egmont Key:
Named in honor of John Perceval, the second Earl of Egmont and member of the Irish House of Commons in 1763, Egmont Key has had Spanish conquistadors and nuclear submarines pass its shores as they entered Tampa Bay.
n the 1830s, as shipping increased, so did the number of ships that were grounded on the numerous sandbars around Egmont Key. Congress authorized funds to construct a lighthouse on the island. When completed in 1848, it was the only lighthouse between St. Marks and Key West. When the Great Hurricane of 1848 struck in September, tides 15 feet above normal washed over the island and damaged the lighthouse. Another storm did additional damage, prompting Congress to appropriate funds to rebuild the lightkeeper’s residence and the lighthouse. In 1858, the lighthouse was reconstructed to withstand any storm.
During the late 1850s, at the end of the Third Seminole War, the island served as a camp for captured Seminoles and was later occupied by the Union Navy during the Civil War. In 1898, as the Spanish-American War threatened, Fort Dade was built on the island and remained active until 1923.
The Tampa Bay Pilots Association set up operations on the island in 1926. A pilot’s skill and knowledge is needed to guide ships safely in and out of the harbor. When ships approach Tampa Bay, a pilot boards that vessel and takes it to the docks. As the vessel leaves the dock, a pilot guides it out again. The pilots’ skill and knowledge helps guide the ships safely in and out of the harbor. This in turn protects the bay from environmental damage that could result from groundings and/or collisions.

Keeper's House
A lighthouse keeper's job could be a lonely one, often located far from neighbors and friends. The residence of Egmont Key's first lighthouse keeper is seen in this picture situated to the right of the dock and boathouse and surrounded by scrub. The lighthouse is to the left.
Temporary Tent Hospital, 1898
Egmont Key was occupied by military forces several times in the course of its history. At the end of the Third Seminole War (1855-1858), the United States Army detained Indian prisoners here including, it is believed, the well-known Billy Bowlegs. Confederate troops and later the Union Navy occupied the island during the Civil War. At the outset of the Spanish-American War in 1898, temporary hospitals such as the one shown in this image were used to treat soldiers wounded in the war.
2nd Keeper's House
Once the Civil War was over, the lighthouse keeper and his family again became the only inhabitants on Egmont Key until 1906 when construction on Fort Dade was completed.

Fort Dade was established on Egmont Key in 1898 as a means to safeguard the Tampa Bay area from the imminent Spanish American-War. Construction on the fort was completed in 1906. The city had more than 300 residents and featured brick roads, electricity, telephones, a hospital, jail, movie theater, bowling alley and tennis courts. The fort was deactivated in 1923 and the Tampa Bay Pilots Association set up operations on the island in 1926. The pilots association currently inhabits the island, along with one Florida State Park staff member.

The Coast Guard took over operations of the lighthouse in 1939, leaving the keeper's residence vacant. The decision was made to demolish the two-story home and replace it with a one-story barracks building. Today, the island is once again inhabited only by its caretakers. Nonetheless, its beaches, lighthouse and the ruins of long gone Fort Dade welcome visitors to walk the grounds and discover the past.

We hike from the beach at the south-west part of the Egmont Key island (at the boundary of the state park and the wildlife refuge) to the beach at the north-east part of the island. Egmont Key is near St. Pete Beach, Florida and is also close to St. Petersburg and Tampa. Shot in May 2012.

Egmont Key has a dark and ugly past
Egmont Key is one of the most bright and beautiful places to visit in the Tampa Bay area. The experience of the ferry ride, spending the day in a tropical paradise -- it feels exotic, mysterious even. But, the island has a dark and ugly past for the Seminole Tribe of Florida.
This is an area where they tried to hold my ancestors and they tried to remove us from Florida,” said Quenton Cypress of the Seminole Tribe of Florida. And although they succeeded with only a few, the majority of us, we're still here.
For Native American Heritage Month, Quenton Cypress traveled from his reservation in Clewiston, Florida to Egmont Key to share his ancestors’ story with 10News. Workers with the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s Tribal Historic Preservation Office and the University of South Florida joined him on the trip.
The Seminole story, unfortunately, here happens after you have the Americans come through. The Seminole Wars began in the early 1800s. And it's a period of constant struggle and warfare for the tribe,” said Dave Scheidecker, research coordinator for the Seminole’s Tribal Historic Preservation Office of Central Florida.
They were fighting to keep land that had always been theirs.
Most people learn about the Trail of Tears, but a lot of them don't know that the Seminoles were taken from Florida by boat, and Egmont Key was a really, significant stopping point for that,” said Lacee Cofer, chief data analyst for the Tribal Historic Preservation Office.
It’s a period of American history that’s often overlooked but a story the Tribe wants more widely-known.
“They were kept in prison and they were kept under watch by men with guns,” said Scheidecker. “1857 is when the first prisoners were brought out here...And over the next year, hundreds of Seminoles were brought out here, held against their will in the stockade and a camp before finally being taken out to Indian country in Oklahoma.”
“There are tribal members who referred to this as a concentration camp. And it checks every box for the definition of a concentration camp. It fully qualified as one,” said Scheidecker. “We try to pretend that kind of thing never happened here. This is the kind of history that people don't often want to look at. For the tribe, that's why it needs to be told. This happened here, this can happen here. This did happen here. And when people talk about now that this kind of thing could never happen in America would never happen here. It has.
Cypress said this is exactly why it’s a story that needs to be shared and discussed more often.
The US still isn't telling that story. They're trying to hide and push it away and push underneath the rug,” he said. “We're here to try and voice and tell that story and share it and make sure that the general population and everybody else knows our story and knows why we are the unconquerable Seminole Tribe of Florida. And just know that there's that fight that we had in us and we still have it to this very day.”

Even with the stormy seas the guests caught so many fish and we believe it is because they have so many spots they have researched well and continued to go to over the years, they are experts at finding the fish no matter the conditions.
The crew was wonderful to all of the guests and taking care of them and making sure they could focus on deep sea fishing and the crew handled the rest. It was definitely an honor to meet them and go fishing! Types of fish caught: cobia, Snapper, yellowtail, grouper, Mangrove, lion fish, frog fish, scallops and even an eel!

▶About Us: John is a 3x Combat Veteran (Army), Laura was a Veterinary Technician, in 2016 they downsized and sold nearly everything they owned and moved into a 5th Wheel (Cedar Creek), bought a dually and left their former lives behind for travel and adventures. They travel with one cat (Socks) and 2 Dogs (Bullet and Kimber) all over the United States. Their rig went back to the factory in 2017, helped film a movie were cast in the movie RV Nomads, and wrote a book called #RVLife: Seeking Happiness Through A Nomadic Life. #RVLife is the first in a series written about their journey to freedom by bucking societal norms and living their own adventures.

How do you count two fish, three fish or even a school of fish? In Dry Tortugas National Park, located 70 miles from Key West, Florida, a group of scientists have joined forces to conduct a massive fish census. In this unprecedented collaboration, experts from four different agencies unite to count and analyze fish data from select sites. Changing Seas follows highly-skilled science divers as they determine the size of fish populations in hopes of better understanding how fishing pressures and environmental changes affect populations of marine resources within the park.
Home to the world’s third largest barrier reef, Florida’s vast coral tract plays a significant role in the development and protection of many marine organisms. These delicate stony structures help support commercially-viable species that form the foundation of the state’s large fishing industry. For one to two weeks, scientists at sea maintain a rigorous diving schedule as they count and record everything from Staghorn coral to Red Groupers. What will the divers find? Are fish populations recovering in South Florida?

Fort DeSoto in St Pete Florida at the mouth of Tampa Bay in Florida a Civil War and Spanish war Fort
Exploring Fort DeSoto in St Pete Florida at the mouth of Tampa Bay. Fort De Soto park consists of 1,136 acres made up of five interconnected islands (keys). These keys are home to beach plants, mangroves, wetlands, palm hammocks, hardwoods and scores of native plants. Each of these species plays a vital role in the preservation and protection of the natural environment. It was during the mid-19th century that the five keys located at the southern tip of St. Petersburg were first considered for fortification. Utilized for the blockade of Tampa Bay during the Civil War, the keys were abandoned at the end of the conflict until the late 19th century when the United States became involved in the Spanish American War. Feeling exposed and at risk, the citizens of Tampa demanded military defenses for the bay. Due to its close proximity to Cuba and the importance of the port facilities of Tampa, the Secretary of War agreed and ordered the construction of a permanent fort to defend the bay. In late 1898 construction began and by April of 1900, the fort was completed and officially named Fort De Soto, after the famous Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto.
