Bangor to Groomsport: The North Down Coastal Path (Northern Ireland)
Walking from Bangor to Groomsport on the North Down Coastal Path (Northern Ireland) following full itinerary as here: Leaving from central Bangor seafront (Bangor Marina and Bangor Eisenhower Pier) and following the Long Hole Harbour along Seacliff Road, past Kingsland, the Royal Ulster Yacht Club and Ballyholme Yacht Club to reach the Bangor suburb of Ballyholme. The path then follows the rather vast Ballyholme Beach to the coastal path past Ballymacormick Point until the Groomport Harbour at the large village of Groomsport. The North Down Coastal Path then continues past Orlock Point until it finally reaches the final exit at Portavoe and the main road towards Donaghadee.

Eisenhower Pier Bangor, Launchpad for D-Day Landings
I'm at Bangor Co Down standing on the refurbished pier that protects the harbour. This pier was formerely known as the North pier but it was renamed the Eisenhower pier in 2005 in honour of WW2 Supreme Allied Commander Dwight Eisenhower. Eisenhower came to Bangor in June 1944 to inspect and inspire his American troops here before they left for the Normandy Beaches and the D-Day assault. A pivotal move that turned the tide against Germany during WW2. The Eisenhower Pier is located to the north of Bangor Marina at Bangor Lifeboat Station. The mosaics on the pier depict the Borough’s crucial role in WWII, including General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s historic send-off to the hundreds of Allied ships gathered in Bangor Bay before the D-Day liberation of Europe. The pier (formerly known as the North Pier) was re-named in 2005 by Mary-Jean Eisenhower, the grand-daughter of former U.S. President D W Eisenhower to commemorate his relationship with the town.
