Japanese Scenic Train Ride Experience in Kyoto ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Japanese trains are famous around the world for their style, comfort and speed. In the countryside of Kyoto though, you may not have speed, but you do comfort and style. The Eizan Electric Railway starting at Demachiyanagi Station is a 94 year old line that is evolving fast. Since commuters are decreasing, Keihan Railways has changed the way it designs its trains to attract more tourists.
The plan is working and the Eizan Line is super cool.
The trains are all “One man” one person operated trains where the driver is also the conductor, taking tickets and payment before letting passengers off. They’re the ultimate multitaskers!
In September 2018, a strong typhoon damaged a lot of the Kansai region including Kyoto and the Eizan Line suffered heavy damage. The line was suspended for 90 days, the longest in its history. What’s impressive is that the entire company pitched in to help from the technical staff and construction to the office workers at headquarters. It’s a great example of teamwork in Japan and a reason why the Eizan line is so beloved.
There are many interesting stops on the Eizan line worth checking out.
We’ll stop at:
★ DEMACHIYANAGI STATION
The first station with change to the Keihan Line express for Osaka and Kiyomizudera, Gion, Central Kyoto
★ ICHIJOJI STATION
It’s known as Kyoto’s Ramen Town! There are 36 shops serving some of the city’s best!
★ KURAMA STATION
You can hike around Mount Kurama and Kurama Temple or head to Kurama Onsen for a dip in the closest hot spring to Kyoto city. It takes 40 minutes to reach Kurama from central Kyoto.

Keihan Railways sells tourist passes for 1500 yen ($14.00) from Kyoto Tower. It’s also sold in Osaka at the airport and in town.
For foreign residents of Japan like me, there’s a 1-day train pass for the Eizan line for 1000 yen ($9.50) that lets you jump on and off. You can get this pass at Demachiyanagi Station.

#25 Eizan Electric Railway Demachiyanagi Kurama
Eizan Railway Demachiyanagi Train Station, Kyoto City
Eizan Electric Railway, runs one man trolly type trains from Kyoto City (from Demachiyanagi) to two tourist locations in the suburbs of Kyoto City. They are Kurama Dera (Kurama Temple) and Yase Station (Yase station provides the Cable Car and Rope Way to Mt. Hiei or Hieizan). Both routes (specially the Kurama Temple route) are extremely scenic and captivating.
This video shows the Demachiyanagi Station inside the Kyoto City. Keihan Railways also has a station in Demachiyanagi, which provides service to Tofukuji, Fushimi Inari Shrine and Uji City.
If you have used Eizan railway in the past and enjoyed riding the little trolly to Kurama dera or Yase, please write me a comment..
Enjoy!!

☆Bits of knowledge〜Eizan Electric Railway 〜
Eizan Electric Railway is a private company that runs a small railway network in north-eastern Kyoto. The railway is called Eizan Dentetsu in Japanese but this is often shortened to just Eiden. So whether people talk about the Eizan Railway or the Eiden Railway, they are talking about the same thing. There are actually two Eizan Lines that run north from Demachiyanagi Station: the Eizan Main Line and the Kurama Line. These separate from each other at Takaragaike Station. The Eizan Main Line goes on to Yase Hieizanguchi Station at the base of Mount Hiei, and the Kurama Line continues on to the scenic villages of Kinbune and Kurama.

Eizan Railway Momiji (Maple Tree) Tunnel
Between Ichihara and Ninose Stations on the Eizan Electric Railway, there is a stretch of about 250 meters with thickly growing trees on both sides called the Momiji (Maple Tree) Tunnel. The railway line is illuminated during the kibune maple lantern event. All lights are turned off and the train runs at a leisurely pace through this stretch to allow passengers to fully enjoy the mystical view from the windows. (Source: Keihan Railway HP)

Things to Do: View Mountain Scenery on the Eizan Line
If you want to take in some mountain scenery in Kyoto, the Eizan Electric Railway is your best choice. Eizan trains run from Demachiyanagi Station (Keihan Line) to the northern parts of Kyoto. The line splits at the sixth station, so be careful when choosing your train. The Eizan Line ends at Yase-Hieizan-guchi Station, where you can transfer to the Hiei-zan Cable Car to visit Mount Hiei. The Kurama Line heads to Kibune Village and Mount Kurama, the home of Kifune Shrine and Kurama-dera Temple, and features a famous tunnel of maple leaves.

Eizan Railway Yase-Hieizanguchi Train Station, Kyoto Prefecture
This is the video of Yase-Hieizanguchi Train Station near Mt. Hiei in northeast of Kyoto City. Mt. Hiei is a very important mountain in Kyoto's history and has a very famous temple called Enryakuji, in many sprawling acres of the mountain surroundings.
The train station servers as a starting point for visitors to Mt. Hiei to get to the Cable car and then a Rope way. This climb for the visitors is from the Kyoto prefecture side. Mt. Hiei also has another approach through cable car from the Shiga Prefecture side.
Eizan Railway runs the trains between Yase station near Mt. Hiei and Demachiyanagi station in Kyoto City.
The surrounds of Yase station are also fantastic and you can walk around the station and enjoy the sesonal foliage, if you are just waiting for the train, or otherwise.
Hope you get to visit this station and enjoy Mt. Hiei also. Enjoy!!!
Eizan Railways Kurama Station (鞍馬駅), Northern Kyoto Prefecture
This train station definitely falls under the enchanting little train stations of Japan. This train station is the service to Mt. Kurama (鞍馬山). Mt. Kurama is located well north of Kyoto City. There is a Eizan/Keihan Railways train that goes conveniently from Demachiyanagi Train Station in Kyoto City to Kurama.
Mt. Kurama (鞍馬山) is known for it's hot springs resort and kuramadera temple (鞍馬寺).
Hope you get a chance to visit Mt. Kurama and Kuramadera. Enjoy!!!!

Kyoto Eiden (Eizan Railway - 叡山電鉄): Riding the railway to Kyoto's temples
The Eizan Electric Railway (Eizan Dentetsu - 叡山電鉄), nicknamed Eiden , is a small network of railway lines leading to two temple areas in the mountains around Kyoto, Kurama-dera and Hiei-zan (Mount Hiei). It also serves as a commuter line in northern Kyoto, which is why trains run about every 10-15 minutes.
Enjoy the nice ride on this line, starting at Kyoto-Shijo on the Keihan Main Line (which connects to the Eiden at Demachiyanagi), riding from Kurama back towards central Kyoto with the unique wanman operations (one man operation, with the driver collecting the fare when the passengers get off) and changing trains at Takaragaike towards Yase-Hieizanguchi.
