Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter can be really confusing! So many winding streets, so many tourists, so much to see! But it’s actually quite a small area, and it’s one of the most magical collections of 13-15th century buildings in the world.
And did you know that Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter is actually built on the remains of a 2,000 year old Roman settlement?
Also, not everything is as it seems in the Gothic Quarter. There are lots of secrets in this part of the city, but you have to know where to find them. I will show you!
To sum it up, the Gothic Quarter is a place you really need to visit. It’s also called the Barrio Gótico in Spanish and the Barri Gòtic in Catalan.
In this video I take you to XXXX of the must-see sites in the Gothic Quarter. These are places we visit and you’ll learn about on Devour Tour’s Tapas, Taverns & History Tour.
At each stop in the video, I give you some information behind the history of the area, and also a little Google marker with the name of the street or square so you can find it yourself.

Walking in BARCELONA / Spain - Raval and Gothic Quarter - 4K 60fps (UHD)
Starting in El Raval near the Apollo theatre we walk a bit around there first and cross over La Rambla towards the Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic). There we see the big Cathedral and enjoy walking the narrow streets all around.
A few churches here and there like Iglesia de Santa Maria del Mar (in the thumbnail) and some museums are inviting to spend some time in this district of Barcelona.
We end this walk right in the centre at the Plaça de Catalunya.

A Walk Around The Gothic Quarter of Barcelona
The Gothic Quarter is the centre of the old city of Barcelona. It stretches from La Rambla to Via Laietana, and from the Mediterranean seafront to Ronda de Sant Pere. It is a part of Ciutat Vella district.
The quarter was built primarily in the late 19th and early 20th century, though several buildings date from medieval times. Remains of the squared Roman Wall can be seen around Tapineria and Sots-Tinent Navarro to the north, Avinguda de la Catedral and Plaça Nova to the west and Carrer de la Palla to the south. El Call, the medieval Jewish quarter, is located within this area too.
The Barri Gòtic retains a labyrinthine street plan, with many small streets opening out into squares. Most of the quarter is closed to regular traffic although open to service vehicles and taxis.

Take our walking tour through Barri Gotic Barcelona and Las Ramblas, Barcelona's main thoroughfare and bustling backstreets
Barcelona, Barri Gotic and Back to Germany - Spain 4K Travel Channel
We still want to spend an afternoon in the Barri Gotic, the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, before returning to Germany. After we arrived with the Renfe high-speed train from Madrid. The next morning we have to take the train via Paris to Saarbrücken and so we have booked the Expo Hotel Barcelona at the station Barcelona-Sants again.
We take the metro to Rambla. First, we pass the church of Santa Maria de Pi and continue to the Placa de Saint Jaume, the main square of the city.
Here is the town hall, with a large banner Refugees welcome. The Mayor of Barcelona denounces the policy of the central government in Madrid, which does not want a welcome culture for refugees.
Directly opposite is the Palau de la Generalitat. The medieval palace houses the offices of the Presidency of the Generalitat de Catalunya. We do not stop for a long time but walk over the Placa de Sant Miquel, which is decorated by the Monumento a los Castellers.
Via the Carrer de Ferran, a popular shopping street, we reach Placa Reial, the royal square. The square, surrounded by arcades, dates back to the 19th century and was built in the classical style. Jugglers and street musicians try to drag the tourists into the spell, but as soon as the police show up they disappear. They play cat and mouse.
Due to the many restaurants and bars, the square is now very popular, after being a popular drug market in the 1980s.
The square is decorated with palm trees. The famous street lanterns are from Gaudi. If one does not come from the Rambla, one can easily overlook the square, since, except for the wide access from there, it has only three gateways openings in the surrounding narrow streets.
We go back through the Carrer de Ferran to the Placa del Rei, the King's Square. It is one of the landmarks of Catalonia and is the seat of the counts of Barcelona and the kings of Aragon.
The Placa del Rei was also the historical center of the city in the Roman era. Here stood the Temple of Augustus.

Wir wollen noch einen Nachmittag durch das Barri Gotic, das gotische Viertel in Barcelona streifen, bevor es wieder zurück nach Deutschland geht. Nachdem wir mit dem Renfe Hochgeschwindigkeitszug von Madrid angekommen sind und am nächsten Morgen wieder über Paris nach Saarbrücken fahren, haben wir uns wieder in dem uns bereits bekannten Expo Hotel Barcelona am Bahnhof Barcelona-Sants einquartiert.
Mit der Metro fahren wir zur Rambla. Zunächst kommen wir bei der Kirche Santa Maria de Pi vorbei und gehen weiter zur Placa de Saint Jaume, dem eigentlichen Hauptplatz der Stadt. Hier befindet sich das Rathaus, an dem ein großes Plakat „Refugees welcome“ hängt. Damit prangert der Bürgermeister von Barcelona die Politik der Zentralregierung in Madrid an, die eher keine Willkommenskultur für Flüchtlinge möchte.
Direkt gegenüber ist der Palau de la Generalitat. Der mittelalterliche Palast beherbergt die Büros des amtierenden Präsidenten Kataloniens. Wir halten uns nicht lange auf sondern gehen über die Placa de Sant Miquel, die das Monumento a los Castellers ziert.
Über die Carrer de Ferran, eine beliebte Einkaufstrasse erreichen wir die Placa Reial, den königlichen Platz. Der von Arkaden umsäumte Platz stammt aus 19. Jahrhundert und ist im klassizistischen Stil errichtet worden. Gaukler und Straßensänger versuchen die Touristen in den Bann zu ziehen, doch sobald irgendwo die Polizei auftaucht sind sie verschwunden. Sie liefern sich ein Katz und Maus Spiel.
Durch die vielen Restaurants und Bars ist der Platz mittlerweile aber sehr beliebt, nachdem er in den 1980er Jahren ein beliebter Drogenmarkt war.
Palmen lockern den Platz auf, berühmt sind aber die Straßenlaternen von Gaudi. Wenn man nicht von der Rambla kommt, kann man den Platz leicht übersehen, da er, außer dem breiten Zugang von dort, nur drei Tordurchgänge in umliegende schmale Straße besitzt.
Wir gehen durch die Carrer de Ferran wieder zurück zur Placa del Rei, dem Königsplatz. Er ist eines der Wahrzeichen von Katalonien und ist der Sitz der Grafen von Barcelona und der Könige von Aragonien.
Die Placa del Rei war auch das historische Zentrum der Stadt in der Römerzeit. Hier stand der Augustustempel.

Antonio Gaudí found his home and his profession in the winding streets of the Gothic Quarter. It is the oldest nucleus and is delimited by Las Ramblas, Via Laietana, Paseo de Colón and Plaça de Catalunya. Among the many other attractions of the city, you can not miss the Cathedral of Santa Eulalia, Plaça Sant Jaume, and, of course, famous architect Antonio Gaudi’s unfinished masterpiece: La Sagrada Familia.

In this video you can see a series of monuments and places of great tourist and cultural importance through a tour of the Gothic district, as well as the Plaça Nova, the Cathedral of Barcelona, by Plaça del Rei, Plaça Sant Jaume, with the Palace of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Plaça de Sant Felip, and ending with the Casa de L'ardiaca, current headquarters of the historical archive of Barcelona.
The video concludes with a tour in Las Ramblas, ending with an excellent view of the monument to Columbus.

Das BARRI GÒTIC ist das älteste Stadtviertel von Barcelona und gehört zum Verwaltungsbezirk Ciutat Vella.
Kathedrale Santa Eulalia
Das Viertel wird im Südwesten begrenzt durch die Rambla, im Nordwesten durch die Plaça de Catalunya und die Carrer de Fontanella, im Nordosten durch die Via Laietana und im Südosten durch das Mittelmeer. Die Kathedrale, welche den Mittelpunkt des Barri Gòtic bildet, ist umringt von vielen geschichtsträchtigen Gebäuden. Die Gegend wurde unter der Herrschaft des römischen Kaisers Augustus besiedelt. An der Stelle der Plaça de Sant Jaume befand sich das Römische Forum. Hier ist heute die die Generalitat, diese umfasst nach dem Autonomiestatut von 2006 drei Institutionen: das katalanische Parlament, der Präsident, die katalanische Regierung.
La Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia ist eine gotische Kathedrale in Barcelona. Sie befindet sich am Platz de la Seu im Stadtviertel Barri Gòtic und ist der Heiligen Eulalia geweiht.(1298-1448.)Die Orgel wurde 1538 in einem historischen Orgelgehäuse errichtet, 1994 neu eingebaut.
Santa Maria del Pi:
17. Juni 1453 eingeweiht.1568 wurde eine Pino (Kiefer) auf dem freien Platz vor der Kirche gepflanzt. Dieser Baum lebte bis ins Jahr 1802 und war höher als die umliegenden Gebäude. Nach dem diese zerstört worden war, wurde 1802 eine Neue Pinie gepflanzt.

The BARRI GÒTIC is the oldest district of Barcelona, belongs to the administrative district Ciutat Vella.
The district is bounded on the southwest by the Rambla, in the northwest by the Plaça de Catalunya and Carrer de Fontanella, in the northeast by Via Laietana and the South East by the Mediterranean Sea.
The cathedral, which forms the center of the Barri Gotic is surrounded by many historic buildings.
The area was settled during the reign of the Roman Emperor Augustus. There was at the place of Sant Jaume Square, the Roman Forum. Here now is the Generalitat, this includes after the Statute of Autonomy of 2006, three institutions:
the Catalan Parliament, the President, the Catalan government.
La Catedral Santa Creu i de la Santa Eulàlia, is a Gothic cathedral in Barcelona . It is consecrated place Pla de la Seu in the district of Barri Gotic and the Holy Eulalia. (1298-1448.)
The organ was built in 1538 in a historic organ case, in 1994 built new.
Santa Maria del Pi:
June 17, 1453 finished.1568 was planted in the open space in front of the church a Pino (Pine). This tree survived to the year 1802 and was higher than the surrounding buildings. After it had been destroyed in 1802, a New Pine was planted.

Tu paseo para descubrir el Barri Gòtic sólo puede comenzar en la plaça de la Seu, la plaza de la Catedral dedicada a Santa Eulalia, patrona de la ciudad.
Para ver la Catedral desde el exterior, elige el carrer del Bisbe, la calle del Obispo, que se corresponde con la vía principal de la antigua ciudad romana. Recorriendo esta calle pasarás delante de dos edificios góticos: las Cases dels Canonges y el Palau de la Generalitat, conectados por un hermoso puente de arcos neogótico. Has llegado a la plaça de Sant Jaume, que debe su nombre a una iglesia dedicada a Santiago hoy desaparecida. Aquí se levantan el Palau de la Generalitat, sede del gobierno regional, y el Ayuntamiento.
Adéntrate en el barrio judío por el carrer del Call y gira a la derecha en el carrer de Marlet, para visitar la Sinagoga Major, una de las cinco sinagogas medievales de España, transformada en 2002 en museo y centro cultural. Disfruta deambulando por los callejones sombríos y tranquilos del barrio: la Barcelona deslumbrante de las ramblas, la ciudad modernista y en perpetuo movimiento, parece muy lejana.
Ahora haz una pausa y ve a la plaça del Pi.
Si quieres ver Santa María del Pi, sugerente iglesia del siglo XIV y perfecto ejemplo del gótico catalán, MyWoWo le dedica un análisis específico.
Si en cambio quieres continuar el paso dale la vuelta a la iglesia y ve a la bella plaça de Sant Josep Oriol.
