El Malpais National Monument (New Mexico)
El Malpais means the badlands but this volcanic area holds many surprises. Lava flows, cinder cones, pressure ridges and complex lava tubes dominate the landscape. A closer look reveals high desert environments where animals and plants thrive. Prehistoric ruins, ancient cairns, rock structures, and homesteads remind us of past times.

Hiking New Mexico
In Episode 2, our RV is still boondocked at the Joe Skeen Campground in El Malpais, New Mexico.
We take our scout vehicle, Pepe the Prius and first explore the Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano in Grants, New Mexico. This ice cave and volcano are situated on the Continental Divide, which makes the hikes a little challenging, since we're almost at 8,000 feet.
We hike through twisted old-growth Juniper, Douglas Fir, Ponderosa Pine trees an over an ancient lava trail to the Ice Cave.
Next, we go on a 4 hour hike at the Narrows Rim, which is in the El Malpais National Conservation Area.
The trailhead and parking area is located at the south end of the Narrows Picnic area. The trail is about nine miles round trip and takes us along the rim of the mesa. Looking down, we can see the lava beds and surrounding countryside and our hiking trail ends overlooking La Ventana Arch.

El Malpais translates to the badlands in Spanish and is pronounced Mal-(rhymes with wall)-pie-ees. El Malpais NCA was established to protect nationally significant geological, archaeological, ecological, cultural, scenic, scientific, and wilderness resources surrounding the Grants Lava Flows.
In addition to the two wilderness areas, the NCA includes dramatic sandstone cliffs, canyons, La Ventana Natural Arch, the Chain of Craters Back Country Byway and the Narrows Picnic Area. There are many opportunities for photography, hiking, camping and wildlife viewing within this unique NCA.
