Our Top Alaska Cruises to Take in 2020
Subscribe to the Eat Sleep Cruise YouTube Channel if you love to travel and cruise the world!
With more ships sailing the region than ever before, 2020 is a great year to cruise to Alaska. If you are considering a trip to this 49th state, you will want to take a look at our picks for the Top Alaska Cruises in 2020.
If you enjoy the video, make sure to give it a BIG THUMBS UP!
With ships from all major brands, there is a cruise ship with the features and amenities that is right for you.
Norwegian Cruise Line has two of its largest ships sailing the region again this year. Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Joy offer many innovative attractions that are fun for the whole family including a racetrack, laser tag, and an interactive virtual reality pavilion. Not to mention, there are many great dining options, Broadway hits in the main theater, and the Observation Lounge with floor to ceiling views of the amazing landscapes.
Royal Caribbean also has some great options for cruises to Alaska in 2020. Ovation of the Seas is the largest cruise ship sailing in the region and is specifically built for cold water cruising. This ship has some innovative features of its own including the SeaPlex with bumper cars and roller skating, as well as the North Star aerial gondola and a sky diving simulator. Additionally, Radiance of the Seas is always a cruiser favorite in Alaska as the ship offers some of the greatest views of Alaska from the nine-story central atrium and outward facing elevators.
Celebrity Cruises will also host a number of ships in Alaska in 2020 including Celebrity Solstice and Celebrity Eclipse. Offering Solstice-class favorites like the Lawn Club, Hot Glass Class, and the Crush martini bar, there will be plenty to keep you entertained when you are not ashore exploring all that Alaska has to offer. Celebrity Millennium will also be cruising to Alaska in 2020. This ship has recently undergone an extensive revitalization with updates to the staterooms, dining, and more.
It is tough to pick the best Alaskan cruise for 2020 among the 8 Princess Cruises’ ships sailing in the region this year. Given that we are partial to mega-ships, Royal Princess makes our list. This ship offers signature Princess amenities and some amazing views from the SeaWalk, a 60-foot glass walkway extending 28 feet off the side of the ship. Star Princess also makes our list this year as it offers unique 10-day round-trip voyages from San Francisco.
If you are looking for an all-inclusive feel and simple elegance during your cruise to Alaska in 2020, look no further than Viking Orion. This ship will sail from Vancouver to Seward and visit Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Sitka, Icy Strait Point, and Valdez. The best part is this trip includes seven guided tours among other amenities like complimentary WiFi, specialty dining, beer and wine at meals, bottled water, and more. These destination-focused itineraries compliment the unparalleled service and inclusive nature of the cruise line.
Finally, one of Holland America’s newest ships is also making its way to Alaska in 2020. The MS Koningsdam will be sailing 7-day round-trip cruises from Vancouver. When you need a break from sightseeing, Koningsdam offers plenty of top-notch amenities, entertainment, and dining as well, like performances on the World Stage, America’s Test Kitchen live cooking shows, and BBC Earth Experiences to bring you closer to nature.
No matter which ship you choose, your cruise to Alaska in 2020 will certainly be filled with majestic landscapes, magnificent wildlife sightings, and memories to last a lifetime.

Alaska's New Best Cruise Ship: Ovation Of The Seas
The new best cruise ship to offer cruises in Alaska (starting in May 2019) has been hiding in Asia and Australia for the last two years. But when Royal Caribbean's Ovation Of The Seas begins offering Alaska cruises next year, she will be the most state-of-the-art cruise ship (by far) to offer Alaska cruises.
In this video, I'll show you what's so special about Ovation Of The Seas, including several areas of the ship that will offer spectacular views while at the same time offering complete protection from the weather.
I'll also fill you in on some of the little improvements that Royal Caribbean has integrated in to this class of ship (Quantum-class) that offer some nice little benefits that you wouldn't have if you sailed on any of the old ships that the other cruise lines use in Alaska.
Unusual special features on this ship include NorthStar, a viewing pod that rises to 300 feet over ocean level to offer spectacular views... RipCord by iFly, a skydiving simulator... and SeaPlex, the largest indoor active space you'll find on any cruise ship.

Klondike Alaska: A Rail History
For most people, railroads in Alaska and the Yukon are synonymous with the Alaska Railroad and the White Pass and Yukon Railroad whose passenger cars provide tourists with vistas of awe-inspiring terrain. That same terrain provided enormous challenges for early settlers of both territories. Railroads were an integral part of overcoming those challenges. Dozens of other railroads also laid track in Alaska, the Yukon, and northwest British Columbia and provided the means to transport supplies to settlements and to transport the region’s raw materials to outside markets. Klondike Alaska charts the history of many of those railroads. ©KUAC 2005

Norwegian Joy Tour (2019)
Tour Norwegian Joy during a three-night cruise from Vancouver, Canada to Los Angeles in May 2019.
Norwegian Joy was first launched in 2017 for the Chinese market and last for just over a year before Norwegian Cruise Line decided they wanted to move the ship to the United States.
Tour Norwegian Getaway 2019:
Because it was designed for the Asian market, that means it had to undergo a massive $55 million refurbishment before coming to the US.
During the refurbishment a lot of public spaces were added like Q BBQ, The Local sports bar and grill, teppanyaki steakhouse, mini-golf was added, and a variety of other touches to get the ship more westernized.
Norwegian Joy will spend summer sailing seven-night cruises from Seattle to Alaska. When it's not cruising from the Pacific Northwest, she will homeport in Los Angeles, Miami, and New York City.

Rainforest Ropes & Challenge Park
Your excursion begins as you board your motor coach for a scenic, narrated 25 minute drive out of downtown Ketchikan to Knudson Cove, an off the beaten track waterfront property in the Tongass National Forest, your playground for the next 2 hours. Before you begin your adventure, professional guides will instruct and outfit you with the best safety equipment in an open air forest pavilion. Then the adventure begins as gravity pulls you along a series of zip lines and connecting elements. You'll catch glimpses of bald eagles and the ocean below as you glide through old growth cedars, break out onto an ocean platform, zip back to a soft forest landing, onto the Eagle's Nest Platform, traverse a swaying log, swing across rope loops, feel the speed and acceleration of landing on the Ocean Zip platform located 50' over the water, and finally the rush of zipping to the ground. Once back on ground, if you still haven't had enough, head over to the 50-foot climbing tower where guides will show you techniques needed to climb to the top. A circular staircase inside the tower enables others to climb up, take in the mountain and ocean views, and snap photos of climbers proudly ringing the bell at the top of the wall. Don't worry! These ziplines are easy. There is no hand braking, the braking systems are state of the art. For the less adventurous members of your party, guides can assist you to skip elements. After your adventure, there is time to shop for souvenirs before boarding your motor coach for the return drive back to the pier. Note: participants must be at least 4'6' tall, weigh a minimum of 70 lbs and maximum of 280 lbs. Not recommended for pregnant women or those who have back, neck or spinal issues.
