ELEPHANT NATURE PARK | Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand
Recently we were privileged enough to visit the Elephant Nature Park rescue and rehabilitation center nestled 60 kilometers away from Chiang Mai City on a spacious 250-acre sanctuary in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. Typically tourists in Thailand interact with elephants by riding them and/or watching them perform in a show; however, the Elephant Nature Park provides an alternative way to visit with elephants in a natural setting (natural valley with a river surrounded by a forested mountain) where the elephants are NOT working for your Baht.

Visionary founder, Sangduen Lek Chailert, grew up in Northern Thailand interacting and caring for elephants in her youth. The park (Elephant Nature Park) she founded in the mid 90's has provided a sanctuary for elephants to live in a peaceful natural environment with a focus on rescuing elephants that have been abused, disabled and orphaned from the begging, logging and tourism industries.
With a specific emphasis on rescue and conservation as opposed to training, riding and elephant shows, the park allows visitors to feed, bathe, pet and learn the personal history and (often) tragic stories behind the individual elephants that together number 37 in the park (32 females and 5 males). Aside from elephants the park is also home to over 400 dogs, 50 water buffalo, 30 cats, horses, pigs, macaques and cows.
The highlight for us was having the opportunity to bathe and feed the elephants in a natural river setting. Having witnessed elephants engaged in the tourism industry it was the first opportunity I've had to spend time with elephants in a natural setting with no expectations placed on these majestic creatures to carrying hoards of tourists and/or perform ridiculous stunts.
Learning more about the rights of elephants, in which they are considered mere livestock by the Thai government, it was disheartening to hear about how they're abused, forced away from the care of their mother at an early age and basically groomed and dispirited to entertain 'farang' (Thai for foreigner) who visit Thailand. Armed with this knowledge I'll never again support tourism that involves Elephant mistreatment in any way, shape or form.
Visiting the Elephant Nature Park in Thailand was an eye opening and educational experience that had a life changing impact upon me. Please enjoy the video above (our experience at the ENP) and check back soon for a photo essay and story from our time spent at this wonderful sanctuary.
Today we're taking a fun little day trip outside of Chiang Mai. We are visiting the Elephant Nature Park, which is about sixty kilometers outside of the city. This is an elephant rescue and rehabilitation center, so we're going to be showing you around.
This center is also a refuge for a number of injured and abandoned animals such as dogs, cats, water buffalo and others.
We have a bucket full of fresh fruit and on today's menu for the elephants are bananas and watermelons.

That was my first time touching an elephant and their skin is surprisingly course and hairy.
Right now the rescue center is home to thirty seven elephants. Thirty two of them are female and five of them are male. These are Asian elephants, which vary from the African elephant. The African elephant is actually a lot larger than the Asian elephant and they also have much bigger ears.
Overall, the experience at the Elephant Nature Park has been phenomenal. We've really enjoyed having an opportunity to feed, bathe and interact with all of the elephants. It is a great alternative to doing the trekking where you are just sitting on top of the elephant and they are working. This way you get to spend time with the elephant in its natural environment feeding it and just having a great time.

Elephant Nature Park is a sanctuary and rescue centre for elephants in Mae Taeng District, Chiang Mai Province, Northern Thailand, approximately 60 kilometres (37 mi) from Chiang Mai City. Visiting an Elephant Sanctuary in Chiang Mai, Thailand was an unforgettable experience! We booked our day at the Elephant Sanctuary through the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary!
We opted to spend a full day at the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary so that we could spend as much time as possible interacting with the Elephants! We would gladly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Chiang Mai.
When booking an elephant experience in Chiang Mai, Thailand, make sure to do your research about the elephants, and definitely don’t book a tour that includes riding the elephants! In order for the elephants to be tamed enough for humans to ride them, they must be put through brutal torture as baby. This allows the owners of the elephants to break their spirits until they become totally submissive to humans.
Please don’t support this type of business! Instead, support an elephant sanctuary or reserve such as the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary. The elephants are treated much better! Plus, it way more fun to feed and bathe the elephants that it is to ride them!

Chiang Mai (Thai เชียงใหม่ (help·info)) is the second-largest province (changwat) of Thailand, located in the north of the country. Neighboring provinces are (from northeast clockwise) Chiang Rai, Lampang, Lamphun, Tak, and Mae Hong Son. In the north it borders Shan State of Myanmar.
Chiang Mai province is about 700 km from Bangkok and is situated on the Mae Ping River basin and is 300 m above sea level. Surrounded by high mountain ranges, it covers an area of approximately 20,107 km². The district is covered by many mountains, chiefly stretching in the south-north direction. The river Ping, one of the major tributaries of the Chao Phraya River, originates in the Chiang Dao mountains. The highest mountain of Thailand, the 2,565 meter high Doi Inthanon, is located in the province. Several national parks are in the district: Doi Inthanon, Doi Suthep-Pui, Mae Ping, Sri Lanna, Huay Nam Dang, Mae Phang, Chiang Dao.
The mountainous terrain is mainly jungle, parts of which are within national parks which are still fertile and verdant with plentiful flora and fauna. There are many sites and locations where tourists prefer to visit to study the lifestyle of the tribal people who live on high hills.
Chiang Mai province for years now has been the tourist hub of the north and one of Thailand's most important tourist destinations. It is considered one of the most scenic provinces in the country due to its mountain ranges, valleys, flora and fauna. Unlike most of Thailand, the climate in the north and especially Chiang Mai is cool, fresh and misty.

Doi Suthep-Doi Pui National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยสุเทพ-ปุย) The park consists of forests and mountain ranges. Major mountains include Doi Suthep, Doi Buak Ha, and Doi Pui. This is a main source of tributaries and streams in Chiang Mai. Sacred places, religious attractions and historical sites are located in the park complex.
Walking Street Chiang Mai municipality has organized, since 2006, the Chiang Mai Sunday Evening Walking Street at the Three Kings Monument Courtyard. It has turned into a thriving Sunday evening market which now encompasses nearly the whole of Rachadamnoen road (the main road of the old city), many of its side streets and the square in front of Thapae gate. It is renowned for the locally made handicrafts. In addition, Chiang Mai also organises a Saturday Evening Walking Street on Woa Lai road which runs from Chiang Mai gate, on the south side of the old city, towards the airport.
Chiang Mai Zoo (สวนสัตว์เชียงใหม่) is located next to Huai Kaeo Arboretum. It is a large zoo, which occupies the lower forested slopes of Doi Suthep Mountain. The zoo contains more than 200 types of Asian and African mammals and birds.
Doi Inthanon National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์): at 2,565 m, Doi Inthanon is Thailand's highest mountain and one of the coolest peaks. Besides the actual mountain itself, there are a variety of other attractive locations such as Mae Ya, Wachirathan and Siriphum waterfalls and Bori Chinda Cave.
Pang Chang Mae Sa: The elephant shows are a demonstration of the elephants' abilities in log-hauling. After the end of the performance, visitors are able to have a go at riding an elephant.
Wat Phra Singh (วัดพระสิงห์วรวิหาร), houses the revered Phra Phuttha Sihing Buddha (พระพุทธสิหิงค์) image cast in Subduing Mara. The Buddha image is now enshrined in Viharn Lai Kham. The temple compound includes the lovely Viharn Lai Kham featuring exquisite woodcarvings and northern-style murals paintings, a magnificent scriptural repository with striking bas relief, and a circular stupa (in Lankan bell shape).
Mae Sa Waterfall (น้ำตกแม่สา) The famous 8-tiered waterfall in Amphoe Mae Rim occupies a natural setting among towering trees, covered with a lovely breeze all year round.
Night Bazaar: Every evening the center of the provincial city holds one of the provinces biggest markets, selling a huge variety of goods to tourists, both foreign and Thai. The market is 3 blocks long and is surrounded by restaurants, cafes and travel agents.

As the largest city in Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai packs in a lot. There’s no shortage of adventure in this city surrounded by mountains and dotted with temples. While there is certainly a lot to see and sample, Chiang Mai is considered a slightly sleepier, quieter town than its southern neighbor, Bangkok.
Chiang Mai takes great pride in retaining its traditions. The city’s spirituality remains a significant element of the Thai culture, and the town’s countless temples help keep its religious values alive. During your adventure in this part of Thailand, make a stop at the Wat Phra That on top of Doi Suthep. Built in 1383, the sacred temple was inspired by a local legend about a white elephant carrying a relic. While visiting the shrines, take a minute to soak up the sweeping views of Chiang Mai from the top of the Doi. Don’t stop at just one temple, though; there are hundreds of others located in and around Chiang Mai.

The night markets, Chiang Mai Night Bazaar in particular, are exceptional places to sample the local fare and mingle with the locals. Looking to discover more things to do in Chiang Mai? Consider visiting the Thai Elephant Conservation Center. A trip to this organization will provide insight into conservation efforts and scientific studies of these gentle giants.

A day in the life of an Elephant Mahout!!
An incredible experience with b.m.p farmhouse, located about one and a half hours north of Chiangmai. We fed, walked, trekked, and swam with the Elephants.
We took part in their one day tour which lasted from about 8:30-4:30pm. BMP offer half days, full days and even 2 days 1 night to stay on their farm.
The cost for the half day tour is 1800 Baht p.p (36GBP or 52USD), the full day tour is 2400 baht (48GBP or 69USD), the 2 day 1night tour is 5500 baht (110GBP or 158USD)
