Elephant Ride in Jaipur, India
Travel in style when in India.
My entire life I have always wanted to ride an elephant. I have a weird obsession with the little fellers, so when I was in Jaipur, India I had the opportunity to ride my favorite animal.
I must say, they are much bigger in person. When I was lumbering along on the back of the elephant it was hard to believe that these creatures can actually run because he could not have walked any slower. Good thing the kids were there to entertain mom and I during the ride. Traveling through the Naila Village was an eyeopener. The brick and cement homes, the cows everywhere, the dirty clothing, but despite the poverty the people, especially the children, had a smile from ear to ear and were filled with joy. What an incredible elephant ride experience.

Elephant attack on tour operator in Bali, Indonesia leads to loss of life - TomoNews
BALI, INDONESIA — An elephant handler on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali, was horribly killed on April 28 when the animal he had planned to feed, snapped.
The deceased is Balinese man I Nyoman Levi, the owner of an elephant tour and rafting concern.
According to eyewitnesses, Levi and two other handlers went to the elephant cage around noon to feed the animals. As Levi began the feeding, a bull elephant named Lampung attacked. Other handlers watched as Lampung wrapped its trunk around Levi, lifted him up, then smashed him into the ground with brutal force. Levi lost consciousness.
The other handlers swiftly delivered a smashed Levi to the hospital, but his injuries were too severe. Levi died shortly after arriving.
A post-mortem exam, revealed nasty gashes on his head and the right side of his chest, according to the Bali Post.
Police, stating the obvious, have recorded Levi’s death as a workplace accident. One of the hazards of working with unrestrained giant animals, unfortunately. Rest in peace, Levi.

Jaipur Pink City Video Amber Palace Fort Elephant Ride Rickshaw flat tyre in Jaipur Old City India 8
There is too much to see in one day, so this video shows day 1 in Jaipur and my visit to the Amber Fort. My next video showing some of the other sights in the Jaipur area will be published on Friday 10th November.
It’s my first full day in Jaipur, the capital and largest city in the Rajasthan state of India, and my first port of call on my Jaipur tour is the Amber Palace. The Amber Palace, also spelled as Amer but pronounced Amber, and commonly referred to as the Amber Fort is located in Amer town, now part of the outskirts of Jaipur City in the.
A short delay in Jaipur Old City to repair a flat tyre on my auto rickshaw gives me the opportunity to look at the pink buildings of the original city which give Jaipur it’s nickname of the Pink City and to point out the different vehicles you will see on the streets of India such as rickshaws (not called tuk tuks in India), pedalcabs, coaches and carts. The original Pink City of Rajhasthan was designed for defence and Jaipur Old City is surrounded by a wall with gateways into the other more modern suburbs of Jaipur.
Once my rickshaw drops me off I look up at the imposing ramparts of the Amber Fort, I can see that it is a long walk up to the hill to the Amber Palace and that lots of tourists choose to take an elephant ride to the Amber Fort entrance. I take the zigzagging path up the hill and negotiate my way across the constant stream of elephants heading up to the wider road to the Amber Palace and notice that the hawkers are still trying to sell their postcards and cheap souvenirs to the tourists on the elephants.
Once inside the Amber Fort I realise that this is actually a series of palaces, or a palace complex built on four levels, each palace has it’s own courtyard. The architecture is beautiful, built from red sandstone and marble and with green gardens and lake. The Amber Fort is huge and I realise that as usual it is going to take longer than I thought to wander around and see all the sights.

PETA Founder 'Beaten' in Jaipur to Protest Cruel Elephant Rides
PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk explains what elephants are forced to endure for rides. Take action to help them:
India’s only female mahout is redefining elephant ownership
Jayasree started her incredible journey of understanding elephants when she was just a child and her father bought her an elephant named Babu. Having lived with Babu for 15 years, Jayasree’s love for elephants trumps the income it generates as she ensures the elephant doesn’t get abused or overworked when taken out for functions.
Celebrating Holi with the Game of the Raj: Elephant Polo
Elephant Polo (April 1996)
The town of Jaipur in India, home to the game of polo, prepares for the festival of Holi. On this special day, they play elephant polo against a backdrop of desert plains and rose coloured palaces.
Subscribe to Journeyman here:
Elephant polo is a slow and ponderous game, played purely for entertainment, where goals are scored almost accidentally. Elephants wander around the pitch with painted trunks and fluorescent toenails. The event climaxes with whirling dancers, fireworks and clouds of pink, blue and yellow powder hurled at the spectators.
