Elephants at home, Chiang Mai
An absolutely amazing day in every way!! If you are coming to Chiang Mai then there is nothing better to do than to go and visit Elephants at home.
The Karen people are the nicest people in Thailand. So welcoming, warm and accommodating. I cannot fault them in any way.
This whole experience from start to finish was laughter, excitement and full of amazing surprises. The elephants are all owned and kept by the Karen family who have owned these majestic creatures for 7 generations now. They look after them as if they are party of their very own family and the elephants in turn are so happy and healthy with mile upon mile of wild, open space to roam around as they please.
The amazing staff picked us up from our hotel first thing in the morning and drove us straight to the jungle, making sure that we were comfortable and happy all the way there. We even stopped for some traditional Thai noodles made in a small local shop by a Karen lady. Our driver, Banaan, (also part of the Karen family), was smiling and cracking jokes all the way there and made sure that we didn't want for anything on the way.
Once we got there, we drove a fair distance into the jungle where we met Athiwat who is the manager of the site. Low and behold, we noticed some amazingly beautiful elephants standing beside him, also welcoming us to their home!!
From that moment on, I could go so far as to say that the events that followed are some I will never forget. And I don't say that often.
We got to be introduced to the elephants before being handed bananas, sugar cane and bamboo which we got to hand feed to them. Once their feeding was done, we walked with the elephants to the river where we got to bathe them and make sure they were clean, cool and ready for our trek through the jungle!
We had already been allowed SO many opportunities to take some absolutely STUNNING photographs with the elephants and the staff were on hand with professional grade cameras to make sure we didn't miss a shot. But it didn't stop there!
We then were given some traditional Karen clothing, a bamboo stick to aid walking, and off we went on our trek through the jungle. Humans and elephants all walking side by side in perfect harmony.
At the other end of our trek, we came across a beautiful raised wooden platform where the Karen ladies had prepared a traditional local lunch for us to eat and relax with. The meal just so happened to be in front of a completely natural, flowing waterfall that little did we know, was soon to be a giant natural pool for us to swim with the elephants and yet again, get some absolutely amazing photos. After our splash, we got to take even more photos at the waterfall which was beautiful in itself and then took a gentle trek back to the starting point, still with the elephants walking beside us!
I cannot stress enough just how well you get looked after by the guys and girls of the Karen family. They are always on hand to make sure things are going smoothly and are constantly giving you advice and information about how to appreciate the elephants at their absolute best. Their relationship with the elephants is second to none and you can really see how much the elephants love and listen to their Kahoots. The mutual respect shines through for all to see.
At no point did any of the elephants appear upset or distressed in any way and there was certainly no riding of the elephants like some of these other places do! The elephants here are part of the family and not used as working animals for abuse at the hands of tourists.
Please, please don't choose any other elephant sanctuary to visit and make sure you go and see the Karen. You will not be disappointed!! It's just such an amazing place. It made my entire trip to Thailand worth it!!
All the money raised by visits stays within the family and it gets used to build and maintain the facilities they have on their own land as well as fund the very expensive crop maintenance the family have to upkeep in order to keep the elephants well fed and nurtured. They are not assisted by the government and maintain everything entirely by themselves!!

CHIANG MAI - Riding elephants in Thailand!!!
VLOG 030 | This is basically the reason that Morgan came to Thailand! Obviously, there's some controversy with actually riding elephants, but we did a ton of research and found Thai Elephant Home. They are amazingly caring with their elephants and that's why we're riding bareback with no wooden chair carrier. Thai Elephant home is the greatest experience we've ever had. We could not recommend them more!
You can book through their website: (this video is not an ad)

HAPPY ELEPHANT SANCTUARY | Chiang Mai, Thailand
Surreal experience playing with massive, friendly creatures in the jungles of Thailand. We hiked and swam with them making it one of the best moments of our Southeast Asia trip.
Elephants at Home - Chiang Mai
These Elephants live in the Jungle and are free at night.
They have bells to find them in the morning.
This Project is much better than the most Chiang Mai Elephant Camps.
Do not ride Elephants! You better support this small family Business!
BEST ELEPHANT SANCTUARY ▼ CHIANG MAI - THAILAND
Chiang Mai, Thailand - Elephant Jungle Sanctuary
The adventure around the world for one year continues as we backpack on a budget though Southeast Asia. Stephen, Jordyn and I had vistited the incredible EJS two years before when they only had one camp (now called Camp 3) where we met Robert, a passionate little Karen tribesman, and the elephants they rescued from abuse. We learned about how wild elephants used to roam in their village, but were slowly taken away to be sold into the logging industry and entertainment business. The tribe decided to dedicate their land to bring the elephants back home 3 years ago, and have since rescued 70 elephants and opened 9 more sanctuaries! We learned that RIDING ELEPHANTS IS REALLY BAD and that as people learn, they spread the word and more camps are being shut down! ITS WORKING!
Watch my first video of our experience at the sanctuary and the story of how we learned that riding Elephants in Bali on our honeymoon wasn't the best decision we've ever made.
Visit the EJS page:
Thanks for watching!

Travel Vlog Thailand - We Found Elephants in Chiang Mai
Daily Thailand Vlog #57 - Backpacking thailand | travel thailand | travel vlog - When travelling or traveling hahaha in Thailand and especialy in Chiang Mai the thing to do is check out the elephants. It's very important that you do not support inhumane elephant parks!! Below you can find the park we went to that treats it's elephants properlly, they actually take the elepants that have been mistreated at other parks and let them roam free and all you do is feed them and eat them. Backpacking in Southeat Asia you will come across many different types of temples and if you are ever in Chiang Mai you should do the chiang mai temple tour. It's a very short walk and you get to see so many different types of temples all concentrated in one area. So to go completely out of order, this is where we started the day. So to put it into the correct order :) we visited the temples and then checked out the happy elephant farm, there now I feel better. After getting back we showered off all that amazing elephant poo and then went to dinner at the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar. We have a cooking class first thing in the morning so this ended the night. Until Tomorrow!

Great Elephant Experience in Chiang Mai - No Riding - Chiang Mai Elephant Home
Chiangmai Elephant Home is an ethical and sustainable eco-tourism project, located in a village surrounded by mountains and a national park nearby. We have talked with the elephant carers (Mahout) and invited them to join our project. Our special project purpose to take the chain and saddle off of the elephants, like some projects of Elephants nature park. They are our inspiration. All elephants care takers and owner agree to take a saddle off which is a good sign and good start for the elephant welfare here. No more being ridden and treat them with respect. We try to do all the best we can for the elephants, elephants care takers, elephants owner and community here.
Therefore we do not agree in ELEPHANT RIDING and ELEPHANT PERFORMANCES. In contrast visitors can observe or participate with the elephants in nature. Even more better that you can walk, feed, bath and play with them close up.
We aim to provide a better life for the elephants. By providing them a safe, loving and secure environment for them to roam free in a natural environment. Moreover we build trust and love between the elephants and humans by showing the love, respect and care in different way. We provide enough food for them each day. Besides that we also plant banana, corn, hay etc., our agricultural products are bought from the local community. We work hard to get a balance offering a worthy experience to our visitors. And sharing our love for the elephants, elephant care takers, environment and community.

Elephant Jungle Sanctuary | Chiang Mai, Thailand
The tour we booked through Klook:
The Elephant Jungle Sanctuary is a top attraction in Thailand and we now understand why. If you want to interact with elephants this is definitely the way to do it. We got to feed them, play with them and bathe them. We even got to play with a 1-month-old baby elephant. It was definitely one of our favorite experiences ever.
Thailand is famous for their elephant tourism so we did a ton of research before choosing this place. If you're going to interact with elephants don't do riding camps but go to an elephant sanctuary. The Elephant Jungle Sanctuary rescues elephants from riding camps, logging mills, and circuses. Not only was it tons of fun but it's a great organization to support. We booked our experience through Klook, a great app that we've been using for a lot of our southeast Asia trips.

Thailand - Baby Elephants & Patara Elephant Farm
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do your research before visiting an elephant sanctuary in Thailand, or any animal sanctuary for that matter.
----
Working with elephants in Thailand has always been something I was skeptical of.
Luckily, I had the opportunity to go see for myself thanks to an invitation to the Thai Fit Challenge, recently put on by the Thai tourism board, GoPro and Adidas.
From the Anantara Resort in Chiang, our first challenge was to go beyond a simple selfie and riding an elephant, to learn about the process of actually caring for elephants in Thailand.
At the Patara Elephant Farm just outside Chiang Mai, we were each introduced to our own elephant to work with as well as a caretaker who looked after them.
I was paired with Boon Gin, a 21 year-old male rescued from a circus, who enjoyed a good back massage and long walks through the forest.
Throughout our time together I learned about how to identify an unhealthy elephant as well the specific practices of Rescue, Recovery, Reproduction and Reintroduction to ensure the elephants well being.
Once our work was done and Boon Gin retired to the mountains for the evening, we were allowed to join in on a little play time.
A baby elephant, otherwise known as lap elephants on the internet, greeted us as with playful cuddling and wrestling.
It was the perfect ending to a great day with these beautiful creatures.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do your research before visiting an elephant sanctuary in Thailand, or any animal sanctuary for that matter.
Elephant Tourism in Thailand is a major problem and many of these places do not treat the animals well.
PLEASE DO NOT go to places that use hooks to control the elephants or saddles to allow multiple people to ride elephants.

Thai Elephant Home, Chiang Mai, Thailand
A great day out riding through the jungle on these big blokes.
Mae Rim Elephant Home, Chiang Mai, Thailand 2018
We visited the elephants, fed them and gave them a mud bath in the river.
All still photos taken by our guide and elephant expert Tony, who has an amazing knowledge of these amazing mammals, and is a pretty darn good photographer too. The video clips are from my camera.
If you are going to Thailand, consider this place. Small, intimate, and super friendly staff. They are very accommodating with wardrobe, and we got a delicious pad thai lunch after our hike with the elephants. Mae Rim Elephant Home
The website is a WIP but don't let that sway you. These folks provide a really nice arrangement to get close to elephants in a professional and accommodating manner without the overhyped tourist alternatives that are more geared for bigger crowds. In other words, a terrific value. Enjoy!
