I left Johnston City, TN., with a full agenda for the day:
•Visit Elizabethton, TN., and Sycamore Shoals State Park
•Begin my drive of the Wilderness Road
•traverse the Cumberland Gap.
The three goals tie into my family history and ancestors (Littrell-Luttrell).
The first connection: has to do with the Transylvania Company headed by Richard Henderson. The company, formed by Henderson was made up of Henderson and eight other partners. Associates of Judge Henderson from his days as a Judge in North Carolina. One of these partners was an indirect ancestor of my family line, a GGG++Uncle, John Luttrell.
John Luttrell, one of 8 partners with Richard Henderson, hired Daniel Boone to establish the
Wilderness Trail from Virginia to central Kentucky.
John Luttrell was at the Treaty of Sycamore Shoals and later, with Richard Henderson, joined Daniel Boone at the founding of Fort Boonesborough.
John Luttrell, commissioned Colonel, died fighting the British in North Carolina during the Revolution.
The treaty of Sycamore Shoals was signed in the area of the state park on the edge of Elizabethton, and the journey to join Boone in Kentucky began there heading north to the path being blazed by Boone and Thomas Luttrell, a half brother of John Luttrell.
The second connection: Following the Revolution we find our direct ancestor, Rhodham Luttrell, and several extended family members, living along the Wilderness Road in counties on the Virginia side of the Cumberland Gap. Years later we find Rhodham and several cousins and a brother have crossed the gap into Kentucky, traveling the Wilderness Road north before heading west into south central Kentucky.

A ribbon cutting event was held on Thursday, June 7, 2012, to celebrate the re-opening of the historic, 130-year-old Covered Bridge in Elizabethton, Tennessee. The event jump started the Covered Bridge Celebration in downtown and along the Doe River.

Overmountain Men Watauga River Crossing in Elizabethton TN - The Prelude to Kings Mountain
The 230th Anniversary of the crossing of the Watauga River in Elizabethton Tennessee by reenactors portraying the 400 Virginian Mountaineers aka Overmountain Men. This area was the western frontier of the 13 colonies. The original crossing occurred on September 25, 1780, exactly 230 years to the day that this recreation took place. These men, along with 600 more local militia from North East Tennessee and North Carolina joined up a week later with 400 South Carolinian's prior to the Battle of Kings Mountain a week later. A resounding victory for the Patriots, the victory was a pivotal moment in the beginning of the end of the Revolutionary War. Enjoy this recreation of American history. Davy Crockett's father participated in the battle among other notable frontiersmen of the day.

DescriptSamuel Murray Stover and brother Daniel Stover fought on opposing sides of the Civil War. ROBERT STOVER followed his master, Samuel Murray, into the War and served as a Teamster for the CSA. Both were captured by Union forces at Fall Branch, TN in March of 1865 and returned to Elizabethton. Daniel Stover was son-in-law to President Andrew Johnson. Daniel also became commanding officer of the 4th Tennessee Infantry Regiment (USA) Samuel Stover was a Confederate Commissary Officer. The military services of Robert Stover, S.M. Stover and Col. Daniel Stover were honored at this ceremony. Stover descendants were in attendance.ion
