Ellis Bridge is a century old heritage bridge situated in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It bridges the Western & Eastern parts of the city across the Sabarmati river. This bowstring arch truss bridge was the first bridge of Ahmedabad constructed in 1892. Later new concrete wings were constructed on either side in 1997 and it was renamed as Swami Vivekananda Bridge but is still known to people by its old name.
The original wooden bridge was constructed by British engineers in 1870–71 at a cost of £54,920 (Rs. 5,49,200). Except two spans on banks, It was destroyed by floods in 1875.[1] A new steel bridge was rebuilt in 1892 by engineer Himmatlal Dhirajram Bhachech and named after Sir Barrow Helbert Ellis, the commissioner of the North Zone. The steel was imported from Birmingham. Himmatlal built it at a cost of Rs 407,000 which was lower than the budget of Rs 500,000. The Government grew suspicious and thought that low quality materials were used by Himmatlal. An inquiry committee was set up and it found that the construction was of superior quality. For saving the Government money, Himmatlal was subsequently honoured with title of Rao Sahib.
The original steel bridge was narrow and not suited for heavy motorized traffic and so it was closed in 1997. A newer concrete bridge was constructed on either side of the steel bridge to support heavy traffic in 1999 at cost of Rs 180 million, and the original steel bridge is preserved as a heritage landmark. After the documentation, the Manek Burj was partially removed and Ganesh Bari, the Maratha constructed gate, was reconstructed to make space for the bridge. The bridge has been renamed as 'Swami Vivekananda bridge'.

Ellis Bridge turned 125 years old today
Ellis Bridge which has became a landmark of Ahmedabad from century has turned 125 years old today. It is now been preserved as a show piece and heritage landmark and the entry of vehicles is strictly prohibited to maintain the elegance of this beautiful landmark. The bridge that connects two ends of the city was built in the year 1892. The bridge, that has not only been shown in all its glory in a number of Gujarati films (and the odd Bollywood film like Kai Po Che or TV shows shot here), generates nostalgia for Amdavadis. In 2012 authorities had decided to sell the bridge in scrap as it was an unused asset. But this decision was then opposed by the group of people resulting in dismissing this decision. This Heritage bridge in heritage city Ahmedabad is 480 metres long and 6.3 metres wide and can handle upto 1196 tonnes of weight.
Interestingly, the Chief Engineer Himmatlal Bhachech, built it at a cost of Rs 407,564 which was lower than the budget allotted Rs.5,00,000!
This made the British government suspicious enough to think that low quality material might have been used by Himmatlal. But the inquiry committee found that the material was of superior quality!
For saving the government's money, Himmatlal was subsequently honoured with the title of Rao Sahib.
In recent time the bridge has been renamed as Vivekanada Bridge but the original identical name cannot be wiped off from peoples mind and it is still known as Ellis Bridge.
Ellis Bridge thus, is also a symbol of trustworthiness of the people of A' bad!

This 120-year-old bridge has become an iconic landmark and a symbol of Ahmedabad. It was featured in several films such as in Kai Po Che! (2013) and Kevi Rite Jaish (2012). The Karnavati Art Gallery is situated at the western end of the bridge which regularly exhibits art.
It was found that steel piers of the bridge got corroded due to pollution in the Sabarmati river. Consultants appointed for strengthening the bridge, proposed its demolition in 2012 since building a new bridge would be cheaper than strengthening the existing one. It was also planned to run the BRTS buses on the new bridge. It is proposed that the steel arches of the old steel bridge should be preserved and placed back on the new bridge. Later the AMC shelved proposal of new bridge for BRTS.

AHMEDABAD ELLIS BRIDGE SAVE AND HELP ME.
AHMEDABAD ELLIS BRIGE-SAVE AND HELP ME.
Will this be the curtain call for the city's iconic Ellisbridge? One should ask Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). Today, there emerges a wide 'hole' in the bridge, owing to some of the special iron plates gone missing under the bridge's carriage way.
With each passing day, the 123-year-old Ellisbridge is losing its precious chunks to our apathy and delay caused in restoration work by the civic body, which the bridge needs so desperately.
It was only recently that the AMC declared it a notified 'heritage property'. The bridge is open to vandals, a space for gambling dens and thieves who gnaw at its iron plates to be sold in the black markets to fetch them their daily income.
Five days back a team of assistant engineers from the AMC had visited the site to figure out the reason why chunks of the bridge were falling into Sabarmati River. They found that some of the important structural plates have gone missing. The AMC is yet to draw up a restoration plan for the Elleisbridge. Since the earlier plans of redoing the bridge has been scuttled, the restoration plan has to be given a fresh thought, said a senior AMC official.
Few know that it is now the fifth funeral call for the iconic structure. Since 1973, Ellisbridge has defied death at least five times. Each time gritty citizens of this city opposed any move to pull it down. Citizens' support was so overwhelming that in 1987, AMC decided to preserve Ellisbridge and built two bridges alongside it.
In the first attempt in 1973, a proposal was moved in the AMC standing committee to widen the road after concerns were raised about increasing traffic. This move was scuttled by a group of heritage lovers. In 1979, the group influenced a resolution in the AMC, to name the stretch between Town Hall and Sardarbaug 'Engineer Himmatlal Dhirajram Marg'.
Almost a decade later, the AMC standing committee brought out a plan for construction of a bridge to replace Ellisbridge. The plan was approved by HUDCO and Rs 5 crore loan sanctioned. This time too, an active citizens' body, including members of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), pleaded with the prime minister's office. It was former prime-minister Rajiv Gandhi who scuttled the move.
