Embekke Devalaya, famed for its elaborate woodcarvings, pillars and other structures, nestle in the Udu Nuwara. It lies close to Daulagala about eight miles from Kandy.
Enticing Wood carvings – The UNESCO has identified these marvellous but elaborate carvings on wooden pillars to be the finest products of woodcarvings to be found in any part of the world.

Embekka Devalaya was built by the King Vikramabahu III of Gampola Era (AD 1357 - 1374) in Sri Lanka. The devalaya is dedicated to Kataragama deviyo. A local deity called Devatha Bandara is also worshiped at this site.The shrine consists of three sections, the Sanctum of Garagha, the Digge or Dancing Hall and the Hevisi Mandapaya or the Drummers' Hall. The Drummers' Hall that has drawn the attention of visitors to the site, due to the splendid wood carvings of its ornate pillars and its high pitched roof.

Amazing wood carvings of Embekke close to Kandy in Sri Lanka
The Embekke Temple is situated in the central province of Sri Lanka and close to the sacred city of Kandy. This temple is famous among the local devotees who are dedicated to God Katharagama .But most of travelers come to this place to enjoy with the wonderful and superb wooden architectural structure .The Embekke temple was established in 1371 AD

Many are the hoary legends that tell of the origins of this splendid Devale. According to archaic documents and the epic Embekke Varnanawa composed by Delgahagoda Mudiyanse, it was built during the Gampola period of King Wickrema Bahu II (1371 AD). One of his consorts named Henakanda Biso Bandara, in association with a drummer named Rangama, as told in a miraculous dream, is supposed to have built this Devale dedicated to God Kataragama in a superb three-storeyed building which is now no more

A project done by Multimedia students of SAITM about the Ambekka Dewalaya which posses a large collection of wood carvings, where no other temple in Sri Lanka owns such a collection.

C'est la deuxième émission prise au Sri Lanka. Le tournage a eu lieu le mercredi 16 novembre 1983 aux studios de Boulogne Billancourt près de Paris. Didier Bettin et Martine Jouvet étaient les candidats. Prasanna Ratnayake était le pilote d'hélicoptère de la force aérienne de l'armée du Sri Lanka.
Le sites du tournage étaient le Sri Dalada Maligawa (temple du dent) à Kandy, Katugastota au bord du Mahaweli Ganga (fleuve) avec sa location de bain pour les éléphants (abandonée aujourd'hui) et le Embekka Devalaya. Malheureusement les candidats ne pouvaient pas conduire Philippe vers le « GARA YAKKA »!
