My First Visit To Santa Fe, New Mexico: Like No Where Else!❄️
SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO EXPLORATION!!!
Leaving Fort Lauderdale, FL for New Mexico was an adventure. I have never been to The Land of Enchantment till now, and I had no preconceived notions of what to expect. I DID, however, know that it would be considerably colder...and it was. That made the three-day visit (made possible by being selected to attend an upper echelon business conference) an experience that was a gift in a very real sense.
I felt an aura of quiet and calm in Santa Fe that one rarely experiences in Fort Lauderdale, except perhaps right before or after the presence of a hurricane! No, this was different. It was as if the spirits of Lakota Sioux, Navajo and Hopi were through me and around me. I could sense the presence of those who lived here before on this serene Sunday morn. I walked the hallowed paths in awe of this now-compartmentalized culture of the Native American. It now exists in our reservations, out of the view of most Americans. Yet, here I was in its epicentre, and I knew that our aboriginal culture was not confined to just a few dusty settlements that are scattered throughout the Four Corners Region. No, it was with me, and I with it!
What follows is my first experience in this grand land of Big Sky and jagged peaks. I hope that you enjoy this discovery journey along with me, and feel the greatness of what is now named New Mexico, along with me!

The Rio Grande is among the longest twenty-five rivers in the world and the fourth or fifth longest in North America. It starts near the Continental Divide in the San Juan Mountains, runs 470 miles through New Mexico to the border of Texas and the Mexican province of Chihuahua, and empties into the Gulf of Mexico. For about 1,250 miles it forms the international boundary between the two countries. The river is between 1,800 and 1,900 miles long overall, depending on how its course changes from year to year.
(ref):
The Rio Grande flows out of the snowcapped Rocky Mountains in Colorado and journeys 1,900 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. It passes through 800-foot chasms of the Rio Grande Gorge, a wild and remote area of northern New Mexico. The canyon provides a wide variety of recreational opportunities, luring fishermen, hikers, artists, and whitewater boating enthusiasts. In 1968, the Rio Grande and Red River were among the first eight rivers Congress designated into the National Wild and Scenic River System to protect outstanding resources values.
The Wild and Scenic River flows through the Rio Grande Gorge Recreation Area. This includes the Wild Rivers on the north and the Orilla Verde areas in the south.
A spectacular vista of the Upper Gorge is from the High Bridge Overlook. The Lower Gorge Area of Critical Environmental Concern covers over 16,000 acres of public land along a 14-mile-long stretch of the Rio Grande from the village of Pilar to the Velarde Diversion Dam.

Painted Body Series #1
June 27, 2008. This is the first exploration of my Painted Body ritualistic photography series for my Oracle of Initiation deck. I had been traveling throughout the western United States creating self-portraits merging with the land after the death of my husband. During the Earthen Body series I had moved to Texas, and then six months before this Painted Body series began, I moved to the mysterious and enchanting Santa Fe, New Mexico. I had felt a calling, a destiny with New Mexico for over 25 years. When I moved to Santa Fe I was already two and a half years into creating my divination deck, but the imagery was eluding me. I had found some glowing graffiti down in water tunnels and within that same week had an epiphany of painting myself tribally and merging my great love of hip hop with my ceremonial self. This is what transpired when I went down into that tunnel before dawn, painting myself and dancing with the energies. There had been many dreams of animals and humans shape-shifting for the deck, and I had no idea how I would accomplish this. I was unaware of cameras ability to create the movement and light emanations I stumbled upon during this awakening of the deck's destiny. I was to wait three more months and many more photo shoots before my Spirits would confirm this was finally the imagery for my deck. It has been an incredible life-changing journey. I am profoundly grateful to all the Spirits and Ancestors who danced with me. The ancient petroglyphs emerged from the cave walls, once again. Mille Grazie. Melissa Weiss Steele. Time-lapse Perseids 2013 from Los Alamos, NM
A view of the night sky of August 12-13, 2013, from Los Alamos, New Mexico. I had the camera take 20-second exposures every 21 seconds. It snapped away from 11:50 untile the battery ran out at 3:52. Many meteors where caught but each appears in only one frame. I'll make another version where they appear then fade out but I wanted to show the event now.
Museum Celebrates New Mexico History
12.12.11 (LAS CRUCES) -- As we prepare to celebrate New Mexico's Centennial, the Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces unveils a new exhibit showcasing the state's rich history.
There are a lot of things curator Cameron Saffell wants visitors to learn about the Land of Enchantment.
This exhibit is a large part, a commemoration, a little bit of a thinking exhibit, thinking about the long journey it took for New Mexico to become a state and then seeing what New Mexico has done in its first hundred years, he said.
New Mexico's Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum is celebrating New Mexico's statehood with the largest collection of memorabilia from the past.
New Mexico is a historical land of extreme diversity, not just in the last one hundred years but going back to the early American Indians of the Southwest. There's a very large extensive documented history here, the history of New Mexico with the Europeans goes back to James town on the east coast so there's a lot here, he said.
There are close to one hundred license plates on display, at least one plate for every year New Mexico produced one, a 10-foot hand made banner celebrating the first fifty years and the 100th anniversary poster, painted by artist Ronald Kil. There's also posters of the films shot on location through out New Mexico.
Filmmaking in New Mexico goes back quite a long ways. One of the earliest moving picture films like Thomas Edison was actually an Indian Pueblo School in Northern New Mexico and there have been making films for over a hundred years, he said.
There's also a tribute to President William Howard Taft who signed New Mexico into statehood. He had some questions on how state constitution were set up for both New Mexico and Arizona, but once he had those issues resolved in his mind, he was very comfortable making both of them states, he said.
The Centennial of New Mexico statehood exhibit at the Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum runs through September 2012.

APACHE TRAIL ROAD TRIP 1930s HOME MOVIE GRAND CANYON NEW MEXICO 43194
This silent home movie dates to the year 1930 and shows a road trip across the Southwest on the Apache Trail, through the Superstition mountains. The film begins with two old friends meeting up in what might be Wichita, Kansas, and hopping in what might be a Model A Ford for the journey west. What follows is a wonderful montage of images as they make the trip including:
At 1:20, an oil well gusher spews petroleum skyward. Oklahoma, maybe?
At 2:17, the entrance to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, and then shots inside the caves.
4:18, playing in giant sand dunes at White Sands National Monument
5:24, the Coolidge Dam, followed at 5:55 with a sign for the Old Apache Trail
6:00, Hopi Point at the Grand Canyon, and Pima Point at 6:40. The Grand Canyon Lodge is seen at 7:30.
At 7:20, Meteor Crater is shown.
At 8:04, the Great Mojave Wall, and at 9:20 a large saguaro cactus. The Petrified Forest is seen at 10:10 and b&w shots of the Painted Desert as well.
At 12:20, two native American boys are seen, and at 12:28 the Continental Divide. At 13:13 a small town with a large church is seen, and then a lot of adobe buildings. Any ideas what or where this is? Possibly Mexico?
At 14:50, a terrible scene is shown where a bus from the Pickwick Stage Lines was hit by a train.. Bodies are seen in the smoldering wreckage. A newspaper headline is shown about the accident. Some research has revealed that this accident occurred in April, 1930, at Isleta, New Mexico. An account the day after stated that, Efforts were being made Saturday to completely identify nineteen victims of a motor bus and train crash, whose bodies were so mangled that some uncertainly still exists regarding names of twelve of the dead. Ten other passengers aboard the Pickwick.Greyhound bus, enroute from Los Angeles to Denver, were injured. Bits of wreckage and bodies were strewn for 200 yards by a speeding Santa fe mail train that struck the bus Friday, at a crossing near the ancient Pueblo of Isleta.
After the collision blazing gasoline burned the clothing from some of the bodies and consumed inflamable parts of the wrecked bus. So broken was bodies of the victims that their indentity had to be learned from letters and their effects and baggage. State official have moved to investigate the cause of the crash. District Attorney Lujan announced an inquest into the deaths would be held Monday at Albuquerque.
At 15:19 a native American woman is shown, probably Navajo, as well as two men who appear elegant in their traditional clothing.
At 15:52, downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico is shown.
Some of the best scenery in central Arizona can be seen right from a car window along the Apache Trail. A route for the adventurous traveler, the trail is partly paved with a section of the route graded dirt. The road was originally constructed in the 1930s to support the development of dams along the Salt River.

American Railway: Volume 12 - New Mexico 'Roadrunners, Pumpkins and Stacks' (Preview)
American Railway is a regular DVD programme looking at the Railroads of the United States. The DVD is produced by Lineside Video Productions and is available through the website: linesidevideos.co.uk.
Full details of this programme:
Between the high plains of Texas, to the east, and the state of Arizona, to the west, lies The Land of Enchantment -- New Mexico. This programme concentrates on the central area of the state, south of its largest city, Albuquerque. We will take you on a journey west from Willard, along the double-tracked intermodal corridor that is the BNSF Southern Transcon, concluding with the spectacular scenery in the region of Rio Puerco. At Kayser, we highlight congestion caused by maintenance of way to the east, and a 12-loco light-engine movement. At Scholle, the recently-completed second track alignment through the Abo Canyon is featured, before continuing west to witness trains thundering through Madrone. In the setting sun at Jarales, an intermodal coasts west toward the servicing point at Belen, while heavy freights depart east, rumbling away from the yard. An interlude will focus on the New Mexico Rail Runner Express passenger trains, operated by Rio Metro, which serve the communities between Belen, Albuquerque and the state capital Santa Fe. The programme finishes with a glimpse of the railway bridge spanning the Pecos River at Fort Sumner in the east of the state. Operations at Fort Sumner will feature in more detail in a future edition of American Railway.
The BNSF pumpkins, which dominated the Southern Transcon during our visit, were three models of 4,400 hp General Electric locomotive. These were the Evolution Series ES44DC and ES44C4, and the older 'Dash 9' or C44-9W. During our visit, only one example each appeared in Warbonnet and Heritage 1 liveries. The only variation in BNSF locomotive type, was an EMD SD40-2 switching Belen yard. Amtrak's Southwest Chief provided welcome relief at Rio Puerco, headed by three blue & silver Genesis P42DC locomotives.
The New Mexico Rail Runner Express is featured between Los Lunas, about 25 miles from Albuquerque, and Belen, the southern terminus. These push-pull trains consist of double-deck Bombardier passenger cars hauled by 3,600 hp MP36PH-3C locomotives manufactured by Motive Power Inc. Their livery includes a roadrunner motif that extends to the warning that the doors are closing -- beep-beep!
At most locations, two cameras were used, in positions up to a mile apart. We hope that the additional views of the passing trains will enhance your enjoyment of this programme.
