Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, Baker City, Oregon (2018)
Visiting Eastern Oregon should include a stop at the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center just outside of Baker City Oregon along Interstate 84. The Interpretive Center sits on top of Flagstaff Hill overlooking the Oregon Trail. You can still walk along ruts of the wagons, that crossed the Oregon Trail, which are still visible in this area.

Forgotten Town in Oregon
#Reedsport, OR “Nothing but Peace and Quiet!”
Fun Things to Do in Reedsport on the Oregon Coast
Reedsport is a small town on the Oregon Coast, located at the point where the Umpqua River flows into the Pacific. Reedsport is nicely situated in the midst of the famous Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. These features combine to make Reedsport a scenic and fun place to visit and an access point to a broad range of outdoor recreation. Here are my picks for fun things to do in Reedsport, Oregon.
Umpqua Discovery Center
Reedsport's Umpqua Discovery Center is a little tricky to find but well worth a visit. The museum has two wings -- one devoted to the natural history of the region, the other devoted to the human history. All of the exhibits are well designed to appeal to both children and adults. The natural history section is a simulated hike called Pathways To Discovery - Exploring Tidewater Country. The walls along the way are covered in exquisitely detailed murals containing the flora and fauna that call the area home.
Interpretive signs, exhibits, drawers, and recordings are scattered along the route, filling you in on the local critters and landscape. Be sure to spend some time in the theatre cave to view one of the short films. The other section inside of the Umpqua Discovery Center is called Tidewaters & Time. You'll take a walk through time, learning about the local human history and culture through a variety of sights and sounds. The Coastal Indian Tribes, early explorers, pioneers, loggers, fishermen, and early settlement are all covered.
The center of the Umpqua Discovery Center contains a well-stocked gift shop that includes books, nautical items, gift items, and learning toys. The museum sits along the Umpqua River. Decks and boardwalks behind the center allow you to enjoy great views of Reedsport's bridges and estuarine environment. Take the stairs up to the viewing tower to extend your view.
Umpqua Lighthouse State Park
The charming Umpqua Lighthouse lies within a working U.S. Coast Guard facility and can be visited on a scheduled tour. Nearby you'll find the Coastal Visitor Center & Museum, located in the old Coast Guard Administration Building. The visitor center houses many interesting exhibits and artifacts related to the history of Coast Guard activities in the area. Umpqua Lighthouse State Park visitors can also enjoy camping, walking trails, whale watching, and picnicking.
Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area
You'll head east out of Reedsport on Highway 38 to get to the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area, home of a resident herd of magnificent Roosevelt elk. The viewing area stretches along a 3-mile section of Oregon Highway 38, with two viewing areas and several observation pull-outs. The Dean Creek Elk outdoor interpretive exhibits allow you to learn more about the elk, as well as other local flora and fauna. Another BLM-operated recreation site, the O.H. Hinsdale Rhododendron Garden, is located on the other side of Highway 38.
Oregon Dunes NRA Visitor Center
Staffed by expert park rangers, the official visitor center for the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is located right along Highway 101 in Reedsport. You'll be able to find out anything and everything you want to know about Oregon Dunes activities, as well as other local recreation and attractions. The Oregon Dunes NRA Visitor Center also has a few interpretive exhibits and a small bookstore.

Jesus said, Have you discovered, then, the beginning, that you look for the end? For where the beginning is, there will the end be. Blessed is he who will take his place in the beginning; he will know the end and will not experience death.

Walking the Oregon Trail and Driving to the Top of the Bluff
The Scotts Bluff National Monument is a beautiful park on the Nebraska prairie. The ranger station/museum was full of information and our little explorers loved the Junior Ranger Program. The living history reenactment made the pioneer story come alive as we walked past the ruts of wagon wheels on the Oregon Trail. A rock slide has closed the trail to the top of the bluff, but vehicles can drive up and there are two hiking trails at the top - as well as a magnificent view!
We called the Robidoux RV Park home as we explored Nebraska this week and I could not have been more pleased. A wonderful, friendly, helpful camp host made our stay so enjoyable. The grounds are beautiful, most of the sites are paved with plenty of space between them, and there is a big open park and playground area for the kids to roam.

Oregon is a vast and varied piece of real estate that begins at the Pacific Ocean and stretches across the Cascade Mountains to the high desert plains of eastern Oregon. In Oregon City, the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center celebrates the brave pioneers who came across America in search of their destiny. The trail entered eastern Oregon in Vale where there is a collection of murals that reference various locations along the Oregon Trail. In the remote southeastern part of the state Crane Union, a unique boarding school offers rural students a tight knit community in which to live and learn. Nearby, buffalo ranching with Jim Kelley. The small town of Joseph has transformed into an art center and Valley Bronze creates spectacular metal sculptures. The Pendleton Woolen Mill has been an Oregon tradition for over 100 years. Portland is the largest city in the state and a unique blend of green consciousness and offbeat quirkiness. In December the city embraces the holidays with a parade of lighted boats on the Willamette River. Oregon’s high tech industry is very much alive and a tour of Logic General shows the process of making CD’s and DVD’s for mass distribution. Mount Bachelor provides terrific skiing on the 9000-foot summit of a dormant volcano. Tillamook Cheese is a dairy co-op started in Oregon in the early 1900’s. Along the coast, aquaculture and fishing still thrive. At Winchester Bay, Oysters are grown and harvested by Umpqua Aquaculture while fish and crab are canned at Sportsmen’s Cannery. The Coast Guard practices exciting maneuvers in the breaking surf nearby. In Siuslaw National Forest, ATV enthusiasts enjoy the Oregon Dunes.
