St. Helena - a remote island in the Atlantic | (Travel Documentary) DW Documentary
Every third week, a British Royal Mail ship begins its journey from Cape Town to Saint Helena, the remote island in the Atlantic where Napoleon was once in exile.
It’s like the end of the world in the middle of the Atlantic. Five days, with a northwesterly course, and only then do the sheer black cliffs appear in front of RMS St. Helena. The island’s 4500 residents are often waiting impatiently for the ship’s arrival and panic if the schedule changes. Director Thomas Denzel and his team went on the journey to Saint Helena and met the people living on the island. Many of the residents are descendants of people who were sent into exile there by the British crown - the most famous among them, the French Emperor Napoleon. This is a report about life at the end of the world, loneliness, unique vegetation, and a very special journey.

Ascension Island views from Western coast in 1984
#AscensionIsland #SouthAtlantic #Island
Tour of Ascension Island taken in 1984 whilst I was working on the Maersk Ascension - which can be seen in parts of the film - anchored in Clarence Bay just over 1 mile off Georgetown, the Capital on the West Coast. Other features which can be seen are - the centre of the island looking towards Two Boats Village; Traveller's Hill; BBC World Service Atlantic Relay Station; US Air Base; RAF Wideawake Airfield; Sisters Mountain; Georgetown; Long Beach; Fort Bedford a two-gun shore battery at Cross Hill, above Georgetown. The battery remains largely intact to this day, together with its guns, BL 5.5 inch Mark I naval guns removed from HMS Hood during a refit in Malta in 1938. A cricket match taking place between the Church and the Exiles Club in Georgetown; Football match taking place on the football pitch near to Long Beach; The world's worst Golf Course which I had the pleasure of playing on - and there weren't greens but browns (smooth sand).
Various ships can be seen at anchor including Maersk Ascension and SS Uganda. Those with a keen eye will notice the Sea Rider heading towards Georgetown from the Maersk Ascension. A couple of Wessex Helicopters from RN 845 Squadron are seen flying near Long Beach.
The Maersk Ascension arrived at Ascension Island in 1983 and remained until 1999 on a MoD charter.
The film was originally filmed using a Super 8mm Cine Camera and digitally converted using a Winait Film Scanner.
Ascension Island is part of the British Overseas Territory of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha under the sovereignty of the British Crown. The territory is presided over by a Governor, who is resident on St Helena, appointed by HM the Queen. The Governor is represented on Ascension by the Administrator.
Ascension, like the United Kingdom’s other Overseas Territories and the Crown Territories, is not part of the United Kingdom. It has its own Constitution (shared with St Helena and Tristan da Cunha), is internally self-governing, makes its own laws and as a separate fiscal jurisdiction, has tax raising powers through the Governor. The United Kingdom is responsible for defence, international relations and internal security.
Ascension Island lies in the South Atlantic (7 56’S, 14 22’W) 800 miles northwest of the island of Saint Helena and covers an area of 34 square miles. The climate is sub-tropical with temperatures ranging from 20-31°C. Showers occur throughout the year with slightly heavier rains in the January-April period. The island is volcanic, and its lower slopes and western side are made up of volcanic ash with little vegetation. Green Mountain, which rises to a height of 2,818 feet at the centre of the island, is lush and green. Despite its small size there is a lot to do on the island.
There is no indigenous or permanent population. The inhabitants of the island comprise the employees and families of the organisations working on the island.
Heavy Crosswinds At St. Helena Airport
Today's Video: Heavy Crosswinds At St. Helena Airport
Saint Helena Airport (IATA: HLE, ICAO: FHSH) is an international airport on Saint Helena, a remote island in the south Atlantic Ocean, in the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha.
The construction of the runway was finished in 2015 and the airport opened in 2016. The inaugural scheduled flight was delayed but general aviation, charter, and medical evacuation flights were able to serve the airport from May 2016.[4][5]
The airport began scheduled commercial services on 14 October 2017, when the South African carrier Airlink inaugurated a weekly service from O. R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, via Walvis Bay Airport, Namibia, using an Embraer E190-100IGW,[6][7][8][9][10] about one and a half years after the originally expected inauguration date, and with a smaller-sized aircraft, because of wind shear problems affecting the airport.[11][12][13] Additionally, monthly charter flights operate between Ascension Island and Saint Helena.

Ascension Island
Ascension Island is an isolated volcanic island in the equatorial waters of the South Atlantic Ocean, around 1,600 kilometres (1,000 mi) from the coast of Africa and 2,250 kilometres (1,400 mi) from the coast of South America, which is roughly midway between the horn of South America and Africa. It is governed as part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, of which the main island, Saint Helena, is around 1,300 kilometres (800 mi) to the southeast. The territory also includes the remotest populated archipelago on Earth, the sparsely populated Tristan da Cunha archipelago, some 3,730 kilometres (2,300 mi) to the south (about thirty degrees of latitude) and about halfway to the Antarctic Circle.
The island is named after the day of its recorded discovery, Ascension Day, and is located at 7°56′S 14°22′W, about as far south of the equator as tropical Venezuela is to its north. Historically, it has played a role as an important safe haven and coaling station to mariners and for commercial airliners during the days of international air travel by flying boats and during World War II was an important naval and air station, especially providing antisubmarine warfare bases in the Battle of the Atlantic and throughout the war. Ascension Island was garrisoned by the British Admiralty from 22 October 1815 to 1922.

Remote Tristan da cunha island ⛰️⛰️ বিচ্ছিন্ন ট্রিস্টান ডা কুনা দ্বীপ
ristan da Cunha colloquially Tristan, is a remote group of volcanic islands in the south Atlantic Ocean which includes Gough Island. It is the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world, lying approximately 1,511 miles (2,432 km) off the coast of Cape Town in South Africa, 1,343 miles (2,161 km) from Saint Helena and 2,166 miles (3,486 km) off the coast from the Falkland Islands.
The territory consists of the inhabited island, Tristan da Cunha, which has a diameter of roughly 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) and an area of 98 square kilometres (38 sq mi), and the wildlife reserves of Gough Island and Inaccessible Island and the smaller, uninhabited Nightingale Islands. As of October 2018, the main island has 250 permanent inhabitants who all carry British Overseas Territories citizenship. The other islands are uninhabited, except for the personnel of a weather station on Gough Island.
Tristan da Cunha is a British Overseas Territory with its own constitution. There is no airstrip of any kind on the main island, meaning that the only way of travelling in and out of Tristan is by boat, a six-day trip from South Africa.
The island has a unique social and economic structure in which all resident families farm and all land is communally owned. Outsiders are prohibited from buying land or settling on Tristan. Besides subsistence agriculture, major industries are commercial fishing and government. Major export industries are the Tristan rock lobster (Jasus) fishery, the sale of the island's postage stamps and coins, and limited tourism. Like most British Overseas Territories, it is not part of the European Union, but is rather a member of the EU's Overseas Countries and Territories Association.
The Bank of Saint Helena was established on Saint Helena and Ascension Island in 2004. This bank does not have a physical presence on Tristan da Cunha, but residents of Tristan are entitled to its services. Although Tristan da Cunha is part of the same overseas territory as Saint Helena, it does not use the local Saint Helena pound, instead, using the United Kingdom issue of the pound sterling.
The island is located in the South Atlantic Anomaly, an area of the Earth with an abnormally weak magnetic field. On 14 November 2008 a geomagnetic observatory was inaugurated on the island as part of a joint venture between the Danish Meteorological Institute and DTU Space.

St Helena: a remote volcanic island | Move now!
#StHelena #Summer2019 #TakeMeTo
St. Helena island, part of the British Overseas Territory also encompassing Ascension and Tristan da Cunha islands, is a remote volcanic outpost in the South Atlantic Ocean. It's famous as the place of Napoleon Bonaparte's exile and death, as commemorated by a now-empty tomb. Climbing destinations include the 699 steps of Jacob's Ladder and Diana's Peak, sheltering endemic plant and animal life.
When to visit:
Travellers often visit Jan–Mar, the warmest part of the year. The rest of the year is also generally warm, although nights can be cool Jun–Aug, especially inland. Rainy season is Apr–May and Jul–Sep. There are civic and patriotic celebrations on St. Helena Day (May 21), which commemorate the founding of the island community in 1502.
Things to do:
1. Longwood House is a mansion in St. Helena and the final residence of Napoleon Bonaparte, during his exile on the island of Saint Helena, from 10 December 1815 until his death on 5 May 1821. It lies on a windswept plain some 6 km from Jamestown.
2. Saint Helena is an island in the South Atlantic Ocean, about midway between South America and Africa. St Helena has a land area of 122 square kilometres and is part of the territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha which includes Ascension Island and the island group of Tristan da Cunha.
3. Jacob's Ladder is a Grade I-listed staircase leading from Jamestown, Saint Helena, up the side of Ladder Hill to Ladder Hill Fort. The ladder is all that remains of an cable railway which was built there in the early 1800s.
4. Diana's Peak is the highest point, at 818 metres, on the island of Saint Helena, a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is of volcanic origin. Mountain and its surroundings with a total area of 81 ha were proclaimed a national park in March 1996, the first on the island.
5. Plantation House is the official residence of the Governor of Saint Helena. It is located 3.6 km to the south of the capital, Jamestown, on the island of Saint Helena.
6. The Museum of Saint Helena is a museum on the island of Saint Helena, a British Overseas Territory in the south Atlantic Ocean. The museum is managed by the Saint Helena Heritage Society.
7. Jacobs Ladder - 699 Step Climb
8. Heart Shaped Waterfall
9. High Knoll Fort is a redoubt-style fort of the English East India Company on Saint Helena, an island and British overseas territory in the South Atlantic Ocean. High Knoll is 584 metres above sea level and is approximately one mile south of historic Lower Jamestown.
10. Boer Cemetery
11. Sandy Bay is one of eight districts of the island of Saint Helena, part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic Ocean. Located on the island's southeastern coast, it is sparsely populated and is a popular recreation site.
