The “Trucking on Route 66” oral history project is a collaborative initiative of the Missouri State University Libraries and Ozarks Alive (OzarksAlive.com). This project is made possible in part by a grant from the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program of the National Parks Service.
Interview with Larry Posey, former Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Campbell 66 Express trucking company and founder of Nixa Trucking, by MSU Dean of Library Services Tom Peters. Interview took place in Mr. Posey’s office at Nixa Trucking near Springfield, Missouri, on February 9, 2018.
Topics discussed include brief biographical sketch including living in Oklahoma and California, working for Campbell 66 as a billing clerk beginning in 1963 in Joplin Missouri, getting transferred to Kansas City and then to Omaha Nebraska to open a new terminal in 1976, becoming a regional manager in Springfield Missouri in 1978, promotion to vice president of marketing in 1983, documenting the history of Campbell 66, trucking authority, certificate of public convenience and necessity, deregulation of the trucking industry in 1980, trucking before regulation in 1935, Campbell 66’s niches, loading crew, company innovations including Camel Pouch trailers and computerized shipping tracking, shipping for General Motors, trucking lines that paralleled the railroad lines, less than carload and less than truckload freight, Campbell 66 buying Highway Express in the mid-1950s to expand their southern territory, buying TransAmerican Lines to expand their upper midwest territory, Campbell 66 starting as Campbell Fuel & Transfer doing local delivery, company founder Frank Campbell, traveling Route 66, relay driving, accommodations for drivers, emphasis on safety, team driving, freight interlining, fuel prices, female driver, ways for drivers to occupy their minds while driving including CB radio, possible future of driverless trucks, truck stops, leaving Campbell 66 for American Freightways in Harrison Arkansas, starting Nixa Trucking in the early 1990s, retiring in 2013 and continuing to work part-time, number of employees and promotion from within at Campbell 66, retaining good drivers, Nixa Trucking’s specialties, benefits of highway upgrades, weigh stations, overhead door innovation, motorized forklifts, freight on board, liability for freight, drivers’ sense of responsibility in accident situations, and times drivers prefer to drive.
AZ 287 West, AZ 87 South - Florence-Coolidge Hwy, Florence Blvd - Florence to Casa Grande
Getting back to our 'forgotten' routes, today we cover Arizona State Route 287. This highway is an interesting one, connecting the town of Florence with the cities of Coolidge and Casa Grande using an odd 'double L' style route. We start by heading west on Butte Ave in the town of Florence, near the Arizona State Prison Complex and pass the old Pinal County Court House when we turn south onto Main St. At this point we're also following SR 79 Business, which could be an old SR 79 (and thus US 80 and 89) alignment, but I have no information to prove this.
We come to a fork in the road, where we can either continue following SR 79 Business back to mainline SR 79, or bear right and continue on SR 287 towards Coolidge. As we enter Coolidge, SR 287 meets it parent route, SR 87. At this T-intersection of SR 87, Florence-Coolidge Hwy and Arizona Blvd, SR 287 ended and SR 87 continued directly south. In 1961, however, the highway was extended into Casa Grande via the Casa Grande-La Plama Hwy. This means that for about 8.5 miles, both routes are multiplexed along Arizona Blvd in Coolidge. In Coolidge, we pass the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, not to be confused with the city of Casa Grande, which is still 20 miles away. After leaving Coolidge, we blow past the small, rural town of Randolph and enter another called La Palma, where SR 287 jumps off the multiplex and heads due west again, this time gunning for Casa Grande. The wide open fields ultimately give way to the multiple, partially developed, subdivisions that dot Casa Grande's landscape.
At this point, the road changes names to Florence Blvd and becomes one of Casa Grande's main drags, where partially empty shopping centers accompany the aforementioned subdivisions. Before long, we start entering the historic portion of town, including Casa Grande's city hall and civic center where SR 287 begins it's final approach. The highway ends at the 4-way intersection of Pinal Ave (SR 387, historic SR 93) to the north, Gila Bend Hwy (SR 84) to the west, 2nd St (old SR 84) to the south, and Florence Blvd (SR 287) to the east. We continue for a few seconds to appreciate the historic railroad bridge built over SR 84 in the 1930s, and expanded to cover the west side of the divided expressway in the 1960s.

Lake Ozark 2015 | 2 of 5 | Bagnall Dam to Big Surf | 1080p/60fps
This segment starts out as we're leaving the Bagnall Dam viewing area. You can see the lake just to your left. We'll turn onto Business U.S. 54 and cross the dam. We'll stop at Dogpatch to get pictures of the lake and see the things around it. Then back on the road again we'll tour Old U.S. 54, detouring into a residential area. We'll cross the lake and stay on the old highway, looking for a public picnic area. We'll go into Lake of the Ozark State Park and park. I'll have my MRE, then head out to the old highway. We'll then hop onto U.S. 54 and drive to Route Y. We'll drive all the way down the road until we see a no trespassing sign. We'll turn around and the segment ends around Big Surf.

This was a test video of my new computer to see how much time it would take to render a video that is 1080p/60fps. In a side by side comparison, the new computer took 4 hours and 45 minutes. The old one was about 18 hours. I stopped the older one when the new one finished. This uploaded video was around 5GB. This mode will be reserved for the more interesting segments due to AT&T's 150GB limit on it's DSL lines (damn bastards!) However all of my forthcoming video series will be in 720P/60fps or higher unless the video just isn't interesting enough, or it was shot on a camera that can shoot only 30fps, or if I decide do render in 1080p/30fps.
