Erie Canal at Lockport NY
July 29, 2011. Erie Canal, Lockport New York.
The Erie Canal is a waterway in New York that runs about 363 miles (584 km) from Albany, New York, on the Hudson River to Buffalo, New York, at Lake Erie, completing a navigable water route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes. The canal contains 36 locks and encompasses a total elevation differential of around 565 ft. (169 m). First proposed in 1807, it was under construction from 1817 to 1825 and officially opened[1] on October 26, 1825.
It was the first transportation system between the eastern seaboard (New York City) and the western interior (Great Lakes) of the United States that did not require portage, was faster than carts pulled by draft animals, and cut transport costs by about 95%. The canal fostered a population surge in western New York state, opened regions farther west to settlement, and helped New York City become the chief U.S. port. It was enlarged between 1834 and 1862. In 1918, the enlarged canal was replaced by the larger New York State Barge Canal.
Today, it is part of the New York State Canal System. In 2000, the United States Congress designated the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor[2] to recognize the national significance of the canal system as the most successful and influential human-built waterway and one of the most important works of civil engineering and construction in North America. Mainly used by recreational watercraft in the recent past, the canal saw an upsurge in commercial traffic in 2008 (wikipedia)

Rochester's Craft Brew Scene Might be the Best in the Country
On this episode of Beer Artisan, we visit the Rochester, New York brewing scene.
Rochester has been brewing beer since the early 1800’s. The first brewery in Rochester settled on the east bank of the Genesee River after a spring of pure water on Central Avenue was discovered. Although that brewery no longer exists, the oldest running brewery in the state, Genesee Brewery, still brews on that same river.

Corning Museum Glass Barge At Riverfront Park in Troy, NY on 6/22/18
This particular show took place at Riverfront Park in Troy, NY on June 22, 2018.
In 1868, the Brooklyn Flint Glass Company relocated to Corning, via the New York Waterways, and evolved into the company that is today known as Corning Incorporated. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of this pivotal journey, CMoG launched GlassBarge—a 30’ x 80’ canal barge equipped with CMoG’s patented all-electric glassmaking equipment—in Brooklyn Bridge Park on May 17, 2018. It's planned travel is north on the Hudson, then westward along the Erie Canal before making its way to the Finger Lakes. It will stop at ports in Yonkers, Poughkeepsie, Kingston, Albany, Little Falls, Sylvan Beach, Baldwinsville, Fairport, Lockport, Buffalo, Medina, Brockport, Pittsford, Seneca Falls, and Watkins Glen. A ceremonial last leg of the trip will take place by land, concluding in Corning with a community-wide celebration on September 22.
In addition to sharing the story of glassmaking in Corning, the GlassBarge tour emphasizes the continued role of New York’s waterways in shaping the state’s industry, culture, and community. GlassBarge is the 2018 signature event for the statewide celebration of the Erie Canal Bicentennial. The GlassBarge journey will also be celebrated back in Corning with a re-installation of the Crystal City Gallery, which shares the story of how Corning became one of the premier centers for glass cutting in the United States.

Buffalo Main Lighthouse
The history of lighthouses in Western New York extends far back into colonial days when the French maintained temporary beacons around Fort Niagara. In those days, Buffalo was only a fledgling village still contained within Native American territory. The first substantial lights on the Great Lakes were of Canadian make, but tides of immigration and commerce soon necessitated towers on the American side of the border as well. In 1805, the young United States Congress made the village of Buffalo a port of entry, recognizing the importance of the merging point of Lake Erie with the Niagara River. The New York legislature followed up this declaration six years later with a proposal to acquire land for a lighthouse. This ambitious plan was temporarily thwarted by the War of 1812, during which the British torched the village of Buffalo.
There is some dispute over whether the title of first American lighthouse on the Great Lakes should be attributed to the early tower at Buffalo, New York or one at Erie, Pennsylvania. Congress allocated $17,000 on March 3, 1817 for the construction of the two lighthouses, and they both commenced operation the following year. Oliver Forward, collector of the port of Buffalo, paid $351.50 for a piece of land near the mouth of Buffalo Creek in 1817 to serve as the site for a lighthouse.
Buffalo Lighthouse, a sloping conical tower, was erected in a mere 221 days. Near the lighthouse, a stone breakwater was extended into the lake to enlarge and protect the city’s harbor. Mother Nature opposed this extension with severe storms, and Buffalonians were often obliged to leave their beds in the middle of the night to repair storm damage to the incomplete pier.
