Ermoupoli in Syros is the capital of the island and Cyclades. It is a unique city in the central Aegean with a stately atmosphere and great tradition. Ermoupolis was founded during the Greek Revolution after the destruction of Chios by refugee islanders who named it so in genuine commercial spirit -in honor of Hermes, the ancient Greek god who protected trade. Thanks to its central location in the center of Syros in the Cyclades and the large natural harbor, Ermoupoli quickly became an important industrial, commercial and shipping center. The city is gem with wonderful public buildings designed by great architects like Ziller, Sampo and Erlacher. Some of the highlights of the architecture are the Town Hall, the Club and the Apollo Theater, designed to the standards of La Scala of Milan and other European theaters. Beautiful private homes and neoclassical mansions were built at the same time. Today it is an important tourist center and a beautiful city that has lost nothing of its past glamour, with strong tourism, intellectual and cultural movements.

Our third stop in Greece has been the island of Syros!
Syros is the administrative capital of the Cyclades and is rich in culture & history.
Walking down some of the streets in Ermoupolis had felt like a like a fusion of Italy and Greece with some of the most beautiful old buildings we've seen.
Ermoupolis or Hermoupolis means 'City of Hermes' and if you didn't know, Hermes was the God of Commerce according to Wikipedia.
It has always been a significant port town, and during the 19th century it was even more significant than Piraeus, the main port in Athens.
A notable resident of the island has been Stamata Revithi, who was the first woman to compete in the Olympic Games and run the Marathon! How fascinating is that!
We loved Syros and there was lots to see and do including the beautiful Apollo Theatre, the medieval town of Ana Syros and of course Agios Nikolaos Church. There is even a casino there!

The island of Syros might not be very well known outside of Greece but among the locals the island is 'world famous'. Syros has a special place in Greece. Its capital Hermoupolis (city of Hermes) is the capital of the Cyclades. Syros was predominantly Catholic in older times and protected during the Ottoman times by the West and the Vatican. Therefore it was a refuge for Greek Orthodox Christians who were prosecuted by the Turks. Furthermore, Syros produced the first modern electric car the 'Enfield' (mostly for the UK market) and the Greek model was the basis for the Mini design. Moreover, Syros is also very important because of Marcos Vamvakaris, a famous Rebetiko musicians and of the best in his repertoire. On top of that Syros has a lot of wealth because of shipping, the largest square and City Hall of Greece (full of marble and in a Classist style) and the island is the proud possessor of an original El Greco icon (Domenikos Theotokopoulos).

Easter ceremony in Hermoupolis (Ermopouli) on the Greek island of Syros.
Syros is a special place, with two hills overlooking the town of Hermoupolis, Ermopouli. On one hill stands the Catholic church and on the other the Greek Orthodox (See my video of the harbor). At Easter 2008, which interestingly was two weeks later than in other parts of the world, both churches came together in a traditional parade and ceremony. Maistrali Studio Sirocco at Vissas on Syros (Cyclades/Greece)
SIROCCO is one of two studios in a magnificent traditional stone house built in typical Cycladic architecture. The house is located in the quiet little settlement of Vissas (in SW Syros), about 7km from the port (Ermoupolis) and 2km from Finikas beach.
The studio has a surface of 25 sq.m. and is fully furnished and equipped for two persons/a couple or a couple with a little child. A baby cot can be arranged in advance on request.
