Chimpanzee Escapes from Belfast Zoo | Animal Escape
A chimpanzee escapes from Belfast Zoo, in this amazing animal escape video captured by a member of the public.
Dean McFaul filmed several chimpanzees using branches to scale the wall of their enclosure.
Then, he and his partner Danielle Monaghan and her children encountered one of the apes on a path.
The adult chimp, capable of killing a human, emerged from the bushes feet away from the family and walked onto the zoo path.
McFaul can be heard in the video warning the children to stay back.
Fortunately, the escapee seemed more interested in exploring its new surroundings than starting any trouble.
Zookeeper Alyn Cairns said trees in their enclosure have been weakened by the storms, allowing the chimps to break them and use them as a ladder to escape.

IRA Belfast Brigade sniper shoots dead British Soldier in Andersontown Belfast 4 August 1972
A British Army soldier was killed by an Provisional IRA sniper while on foot-patrol in the Andersonstown area of Belfast. This was the 106th soldier killed by the IRA since the war began.
Great Escape
On 25th September 1983, 38 republican prisoners boarded a food lorry in H7 long kesh, this was to become known as the biggest jail escape in Europe, and a major blow to the British Government. Over many months, prisoners gathered intelligence in relation to their surroundings, the outlay of the land external to the prison, and the personnel guarding them. The aim was to get as many volunteers out, and to rejoin the struggle. Gerry Kelly has compiled a book on what is known as The Great Escape . In an exclusive interview with Belfast NGA he details his thoughts of that historic period.
Riots In Belfast, Northern Ireland, 1984
Thousands of people marched in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on August 14, 1984 to protest the death of a man killed by police officers trying to arrest an American supporter of the outlawed Irish Republican Army.
The victim, Sean Downes, was in the crowd that had gathered Sunday at an I.R.A. rally to hear Martin Galvin, publicity director of the New York-based Northern Irish Aid Committee, called Noraid, which supports the I.R.A.
Mr. Downes was struck by a plastic bullet as policemen charged the crowd in an unsuccessful attempt to arrest Mr. Galvin, who had been barred from Northern Ireland by the British authorities. Mr. Galvin escaped.
The march tonight was peaceful and at most times silent. Earlier in the day, there was scattered violence in West Belfast as youths burned cars, and after the march tonight some roadblocks were built and set on fire.
Mr. Downes was the 15th person to die from plastic and rubber bullets fired by policemen and troops here, and his death brought calls for investigations and a chorus of condemnations from British and Irish politicians.

We were invited down to try out the Troubles Tour at the Crumlin Road Gaol.
On this tour you get shown around the streets of West Belfast by two ex prisoners, one Loyalist and one Republican, both from their respective areas.
You break for lunch and then get shown around the prison itself by one of the extremely knowledgeable guides who give you and insight into the jail's history, particularly during the troubles. It's well worth a go! #Gifted #Belfast #VisitBelfast

IRA 1983 Break Out of the Maze Prison
On 25 September 1983, the Maze suffered the largest breakout of prisoners from a British prison. Thirty-eight prisoners hijacked a prison meals lorry and smashed their way out. During the breakout four prison officers were stabbed, including one, James Ferris, who died of a heart attack as a result. 'I'd be dead in two days without a knife'
There are more knife crimes on the streets of England and Wales than at any time for almost a decade and, more than ever, young people are likely to be involved.
The Home Secretary Sajid Javid has introduced new measures to help children understand that by joining a gang and carrying a knife they are putting their lives at risk.
These knife crime prevention orders allow police to place restrictions on teenagers they suspect of carrying weapons.
Sky's home editor Jason Farrell spoke to one gang who told him why they carry knives and what it would take for them to leave a life of crime.

Belfast waterworks is hidden away amongst the buzz of Belfast city toward the north. It provides a simple escape to nature. It is well maintained and you can escape from the city and revisit nature.
It is a popular spot for leisure. You can go on walking trails and take in the view of Cavehill and black mountain. A place for all the family, especially the younger kids. The Belfast Waterworks is a great spot for a family day out.
The Waterworks includes a sports facility, a community garden and two children's playgrounds. The site was originally proposed to be used for water based activities. Since the Waterworks initial development, one of the ponds was stocked with trout for the local angling club and man made islands have been installed to promote the breeding of waterfowl.
The Waterworks was Belfast's source of water until in the mid 19th century until it was opened as a public park in the 1950s. Now the Waterworks is a haven for waterfowl, you can also spot greylag geese and mute swans, as well as other birds such as mallards, tufted ducks, coots, pochards, goldeneyes, cormorants and great-crested grebes.
The Waterworks has got many sporting facilities from Soccer pitches, Gaelic and Camogie pitches to tennis courts.
The Waterworks also hosts a Park Run event every Saturday morning at 9.30am where participants run, jog or walk a free 5k promoting healthy living and fitness. The Waterworks also hosts events that run regularly such as family fun days and band performances.
Award winning actor Stephen Rhea, who has starred in films such as V for Vendetta and the Crying Game grew up opposite the park on the Antrim Road.
There are two children's playgrounds, one is more suitable for younger children and the other is busier and more suitable for older children. one of the playgrounds also has a swing suitable for children with disabilities. In the Waterworks there is also a mobile coffee hut for those parents out in the cold while their kids play in the parks at Belfast Waterworks.
All in all the Waterworks provides a nice family getaway for the day with various walking trail routes, space for the kids to play and get close to nature despite the buzz of Belfast city in the background.

Recently we visited Belfast Zoo. It is located in the wildish forest/park at the foot of the mountains. We were surprised how big are animals' habitats. Actually we had to walk a lot, climb the hills just to move between zones. The weather was very moody but we liked the place a lot!

The history of Belfast started when it was playing an important role as a port and also when it was the biggest linen producer in the world and thus played an important role in the Industrial Revolution and earned the nickname Linenopolis.

Adding to these touristic places which we have mentioned and been to, St. Anne's Cathedral which is also one of the important touristic attractions that bring lots of tourists to it ( St. Anne's Cathedral is also known as Belfast Cathedral, and it is a cathedral of the church of Ireland in Belfast.
Belfast city is not just about the different historical attractions that one will manage to go to, but there are those beautiful gardens which could be also visited and which are considered the best for families who have their kids along and want them to enjoy playing around for some time. One of these different parks in Belfast is the Botanic Gardens ( which is not the only famous one to be known there, but one of those mostly known.

On the 14th of July 1994, a woman was found dead close to the Northern Irish border. 34-year-old Caroline of Belfast had been executed by the IRA for being a spy.
6 months earlier, filmmaker Brenda Parkerson had met with Caroline's daughter Shauna. Caroline said in an interview that she could not remember living in a time of peace; she has been a young child when the troubles in Belfast started. During the 25 years during which the war lasted, she got married and raised three children; and only a few weeks before the ceasefire started she was killed. Since the ceasefire, the situation in Northern Ireland has not changed much: the fear to talk is as big as ever before.
Brenda Parkerson investigates the sociological conditions that allowed such a crime to happen.
