Welcome to the Esperance -- it's Out of the way, out of this world!!
Esperance, roughly translated, is French for hope and it was the French that are credited with the town's discovery, naming it and other local landmarks whilst sheltering from a storm in this area in 1792.
Ten years on Matthew Flinders sailed the glorious waters of the Bay of Isles, discovering and naming gems such as Lucky Bay and Thistle Cove.
Whalers, sealers and pirates followed, as did pastoralists and miners, keen to cash in on free land and a gold boom to the north at Kalgoorlie.
Today's population of this delightful town is over 14,000, tourism, agriculture and fishing steer the economy of this stunning coastal community.
The Australian Traveller Magazine judged Esperance on March 25th, 2009 the most beautiful Town in Western Australia and the second most beautiful in the whole of Australia.
How to get there? Well!
First a flight to Western Australia's capital city Perth, then, from Perth a short 1.5hr flight to Esperance or a 721km country drive, through the wheat belt via Wagin and Lake Grace.
Allow a few days for your stay. A week or more is recommended to see most attractions including the most beautiful scenery and some of the whitest beaches in Australia. However it will take a lot longer to see all that is on offer in the region.
The best times to visit are between July/September, when you have the best chances to see some Whales and the beginning of Wildflower season.
Ok, let's imagine that you're in Esperance. To ensure that you have a better experience; your first stop should be at the Esperance Visitor Centre, where the staff will happily assist you.
There are loads of things to see and do here. Self-drive or organised tours will take you out to Cape Le Grand National Park and the Great Ocean Drive, where you'll find the most beautiful beaches.
On the way to the National Park you can visit the Esperance Stonehenge; just outside of town you can go for a walk in the nature reserves, visit the Bird and Animal Park and the Dalyup River Winery.
And right in town we have the unique Mermaid Leather display and the Municipal Museum. Various art galleries can be found in and around Esperance too. And while on the coast, make sure you ask about the cruises to take you out to the islands of the Recherché Archipelago.

Esperance Town
How to get there? Well! First a flight to Western Australias capital city Perth, then, from Perth a short 1.5hr flight to Esperance or a 721km country drive, through the wheat belt via Wagin and Lake Grace. Esperance is located 500kms east from the City of Albany and 400kms south from the City of Kalgoorlie/Boulder.
Allow a few days to stay, a week or more is recommended to see most attractions and the most beautiful scenery, including the whitest beaches in Australia; however it will take a lot longer to see all that is on offer in the region. Anytime is a good time to come and visit. From mid-June to mid-October you may see whales, usually the Southern Right Whales. Also at this time the wildflowers come out and can be seen in the National Parks, Helms Arboretum and the various nature reserves. In the summer you can spend your days at the beach, and even if its a busy time in Esperance you will always find a quiet spot. From around March to May the weather is absolutely gorgeous! Ok, now that youre in Esperance, to ensure that you have a better experience your first stop should be at the Esperance Visitor Centre, where the staff will assist you when you arrive. They speak fluent holidays! Esperance is an amazing place to live; it has shops to suit all needs and you can also find a range of exclusive locally made products, some not produced anywhere else in the world. The Town has a large variety of shops, such as supermarkets, Clothing, Hardware, Restaurants and fast foods; and services like Schools and university, car repairs, and so many more. Tanker Jetty is a timber jetty curving out into the Esperance Bay of about 670m in length. It was built in 1935 to serve the shipping needs of the Esperance region and townsite. Its a rare example of substantially intact jetty on the coast of WA. It is no longer in use as a facility for transportation or cargo, but is now used for recreation. If youre interested in diving, the artificial reef attracts a variety of fish species. For most of the time, Sammy the Seal will be at the Tanker Jetty waiting for you to come and say hello.

How it started -
Founded in 2011, by company director and adventurer Sam Hilton. We Travel was born from a love for travel, passion for storytelling and a dream to share it with the world. Taking a camera and a backpack he left Australia travelling through New Zealand, US, Mexico and Bali capturing his experience and sharing it with friends. The feed back was positive and the response overwhelming. It gave him the drive to continue creating and sharing despite a lack of funding and financial hardship. During 2012, Sam took to the road in his van across Australia. Joining him were a bunch of travellers from across the globe, he's mission was to take them on a search for adventure and provide them with a unique Australian experience.

To create a global community of travellers, a platform in which they share their experiences of travel and the places they go. We are embarking on branding a sub culture in which travellers all across the world can associate with. Through social media content, we engage our audience with a web based documentary series which captures the spirit and essence of travel. 56. Pine Grove Holiday Park, Esperance WA
The Pine Grove Holiday Park in Esperance was our favourite choice of places to stay.
Fantastic value at $32 for all 3 of us adults.
The park includes a Pool, there's a large choice of ensuite sites if you choose to, the sites, are large and it is a short 5 min drive to beaches and the town centre.
There is Free Wifi albeit limited
The onsite managers are super friendly.

Tim Smith, host of the popular RV Travel/lifestyle TV show Discover Downunder, visits Esperance Bay Holiday Park located in Western Australia in the centre of Esperance. The area of the Esperance townsite was first settled by the Dempsters, a pioneer family of Scottish descent, in the 1870s.[3] A telegraph station was opened in 1876, although the formal gazettal of the townsite did not occur until 1893.
In 1979, pieces of the space station Skylab crashed onto Esperance after the craft broke up over the Indian Ocean. The municipality fined the United States $400 for littering. The fine was never paid. Skylab's demise was an international media event, with merchandising, wagering on time and place of re-entry and nightly news reports. The San Francisco Examiner offered a $10,000 prize for the first piece of Skylab to be delivered to their offices. 17-year-old Stan Thornton scooped a few pieces of Skylab off the roof of his home in Esperance, Western Australia and caught the first flight to San Francisco, where he collected his prize. In January 2007, Esperance experienced a torrential storm with wind gusts of up to 110km/h and brought 155mm of rainfall within 24 hours, causing significant flooding. More than 100 homes were damaged, several boats were destroyed, trees were felled and 35m of bridge on the South Coast Highway, the main road linking Esperance to Perth, was washed away. The Western Australian Government declared the area a natural disaster zone. Over 25,000 sheep were killed in the storm.[5][6]

Esperance Great Ocean Drive
The Great Ocean Drive. This drive from the town centre is the 38km self drive tourist loop, which takes in the beautiful surfing and fishing beaches, the wind farm and Pink Lake. The Rotary Lookout is the start of a lovely walk, especially during wildflower season. West Beach is great for surfing and Dolphins. Salmon Beach is popular for Salmon fishing, they often circle this bay. Fouth Beach, 4 miles from town, is the best beach for Wind Sports. Twilight Beach is a great family beach and it was voted Best Beach in Australia in 2006. Observatory Point, shows how grand the coastline is, giving a 360o view of the area.

Esperance Seafront Caravan Park & Units
Seafront Caravan Park. The Esperance Seafront Caravan Park has magnificent ocean views and is situated overlooking beautiful Esperance Bay and is a relaxing quiet, lawned, shady 3 and a half star RAC rated caravan park. The park is terraced and is 30m from the beach, two kilometers from the town centre and is close to the fishing jetty with resident Sammy the Sealion. The sites have magnificent ocean views. Our BBQ area and campers kitchen are free and have every facility including TV, and our washing machines and dryers reasonably priced. We cater for large rigs with drive though sites and can accommodate buses or coaches and we have several sewered dump points. We have a large playground and our shop and reception are open from 7am-7pm every day of the year. The shop has tourist information and an Internet Booth. The wireless access is 24hr. We have four types of accommodation from our tent and caravan sites, to Standard Cabins, En-Suite Cabins RAC rated 4 star and Holiday Units RAC rated at 4.5 star.

Sydney collective, Makeshift, used their spaced residency to consider the edibility of the local Esperance landscape. The historical point of departure for their research was the story of French naturalist, Claude-Antoine-Gaspard Riche (of the d'Entrecasteaux expedition, 1792), who became lost on the shores of nearby Pink Lake over 200 years ago, thirsty, hungry and surrounded by food he could not recognise.
Informed by this local legend and historical area photographs of the goldfields, Makeshift created and filmed an unusual dining tableau in Pink Lake. Intended as a kind of apparition that the delirious M. Riche might have seen in his desperate hours, the tableau incorporated borrowed objects, edible native plants and the participation of guests from the community with connections to the land.
Makeshift's exhibited installation comprises video documentation, domestic items collected in Esperance and a French stereoscope from the early 1900s that enables visitors to view 3D images of Esperance's food supply as it exists today. Together these works combine to provide viewers with a type of self-contained time machine, a chance to look backwards and forwards in time at alternate ways of living in Esperance.
