The lake of Banyoles is well-known beyond the borders, not least because of the numerous sports and leisure activities. However, it is also a unique area of great interest with respect to geology, ecology, culture and landscape. Immediately upon our arrival we felt really comfortable on Lake Banyoles. It radiates tranquility and we forget about stress and hectic. Not least due to the nature around the lake, the clear green water, the ducks and the snow capped mountains of the Pyrenees in the background.
The lake lies in a tectonic valley and has been formed 250,000 years ago. It has a perimeter of 6,650 m, is 2150 m long, 750 m wide and has an average depth of 15 m. The maximum depth is 132 m.
It was the ideal venue for the rowing competitions at the 1992 Olympics and the 2004 World Rowing Championships.
Before the Tourist Infomation the twinhull excursion boat Tirona from Naviliera les Goges is waiting for us. With captain Xavier Hernandez Guillen we make a round trip across the lake.
The nature around the lake is beautiful and a unique idyll.
We only see a few people. There are a few walkers and cyclists on the road, others made picnic or a trip with a rowboat.
Our knowledgeable and friendly guides Vikki Benito and Txell Pujol gave us a lot information about the region and its people, the lake and its story.
The clear water allows a look at the bottom of the lake, on which large stone slabs have formed. These are travertine rocks that have formed over the years by the biochemical processes characteristic of a lacustrine basin.
In the lake you will find a wide variety of fish. Some of them have been introduced and started to endanger the population of native species. The Consorci de l'Estany Association has carried out a number of projects to encourage the recovery of threatened native species.

Der See von Banyoles ist nicht zuletzt wegen der zahlreichen Sport- und Freizeitaktivitäten über die Grenzen bekannt. Er ist aber auch in Bezug auf Geologie, Ökologie, Kultur und Landschaft ein einzigartiges Gebiet von großem Interesse.
Sofort bei unsere Ankunft fühlten wir uns am See von Banyoles richtig wohl. Er strahlt eine Ruhe aus und wir vergessen jeglichen Stress. Dazu trägt die Natur rund um den See, das klare grüne Wasser, die Enten und nicht zuletzt die schneebedeckten Berge der Pyrenäen im Hintergrund bei.
Der See liegt in einer tektonischen Senke, die vor 250.000 Jahren entstanden ist. Er hat einen Umfang von 6.650 m und ist 2150 m lang und 750 m breit und im Durchschnitt 15 m tief. Die größte Tiefe beträgt 132 m. Es war der ideale Austragungsort für die Ruderwettkämpfe bei der Olympiade 1992 und den Ruder-Weltmeisterschaften 2004.

Die Natur rund um dem See ist wunderschön und ein einzigartiges Idyll. Wir sehen nur wenige Menschen. Es waren einige Wanderer und Radfahrer unterwegs, andere machten Picknick oder fuhren mit dem Ruderboot.
Unsere kompetenten und freundlichen Guides Vikki Benito und Txell Pujol wussten viel über die Region und ihre Bewohner, den See und seine Geschichte zu erzählen.
Das klare Wasser erlaubt oft einen Blick auf den Grund des Sees, auf dem sich große Steinplatten gebildet haben. Es sind Travertin Felsen, die sich im Laufe der Jahre durch die, für ein limnischen Becken charakteristischen biochemischen Prozesse, gebildet haben.
Im See findet man eine große Vielfalt von Fischen. Einige von ihnen wurden nachträglich eingesetzt und begannen die ursprünglichen Arten zu gefährdeten. Daraufhin hat Consorci de l'Estany Association einige Projekte ins Leben gerufen, um die Erholung der bedrohten einheimischen Arten zu fördern.

L'Estany de Banyoles
L'Estany de Banyoles, located in the municipality of the town with its name, in the Pla de l'Estany region, is the largest natural lake in Catalonia with more than 2 kilometers in length and 700 in width.
Until the last century, it was believed that the waters came from those that lost the Ter and Fluvià rivers, but recent studies have shown that the lake is filled by aquifers from northern and western Alta Garrotxa. It formed 250,000 million years ago, in the Quaternary era.
The Legend is that of the Dragon of Banyoles, who tells us that in its depths there lived a dragon that every night came out and took a person or animal from the farmers and ate them. The town of Banyoles was frightened and did not dare to leave at night, until a monk named Mer arrived, that when he saw the problem, he went in search of the dragon, to reach an agreement with him and that he left to eat people The monk convinced the dragon and both together went to town, people when he saw him, hid, but the monk called them to leave. Nobody left, only one boy approached the dragon and touched him, then the town when he saw nothing happened, decided to leave. They asked the monk how he had convinced him and he replied that he had turned it into a vegetarian and that if the town gave him fruit and vegetables every day, he would not eat any animals or people. The legend says that all the batholins accepted and everyone was happy and ate anise.

ESTANY DE BANYOLES
RELAX EN EL LAGO DE BAÑOLAS.
El lago de Bañolas (en catalán, L'Estany de Banyoles) es el lago más grande de Cataluña, en la provincia de Gerona. Es el principal símbolo de la ciudad de Bañolas. El lago y su cuenca lacustre son considerados el conjunto cárstico más extenso de España, constituyendo un sistema medioambiental de notable valor.
Situado en el oeste del término municipal de Bañolas, fue declarado por la Generalidad de Cataluña como zona integrante del Plan de Espacios de Interés Natural. En 2003 se incluyó en la lista Ramsar de Zonas Húmedas de Importancia Internacional, solicitándose por varios colectivos la instauración de un Parque Natural.
El lago de Bañolas es de origen tectónico y cárstico. Se formó en la época cuaternaria, hace unos 250.000 años. Los movimientos tectónicos producidos por la formación de los Pirineos abrieron la falla del Ampurdán. La erosión y otros fenómenos geológicos crearon la zona lacustre.
El primer lago de Bañolas tenía una extensión muy superior a la actual, inundando las riberas unos 6 u 8 metros por encima del nivel actual de las aguas.
Muchos científicos sostienen que el origen de las aguas del lago está relacionado por las pérdidas de los ríos Ter y Fluvià. Los estudios llevados a cabo en el siglo XX demuestran que el lago se alimenta de manera subterránea de los acuíferos provenientes del norte y del oeste, en la zona de la Alta Garrocha.
