Big Thompson River Fly Fishing : Kirks Fly Shop, Estes Park CO
Perhaps more than any other state, Colorado typifies the “mountain lifestyle.” That includes hiking, biking, climbing, and simple appreciation of the scenic beauty and clean air. But consider this: Colorado is also home to more than 2,000 lakes and 8,000 miles of river. That means floating sports like canoeing, kayaking, and paddle boarding are also part of mountain life.
And so is fishing!
In the 1,000-plus miles we covered during the 50 Campfires Field Trip: Heart of the Rockies, we were blown away by the number of people we saw fishing nearly everywhere there was water – especially flowing water. We made it a point to try it for ourselves.
The primary fish pursued in Colorado’s rivers are trout. There are opportunities to catch rainbow, brown, brook, lake, and cutthroat species as well as Kokanee salmon, which is a land-locked sockeye. It’s interesting to note, the only one of these species truly native to Colorado is the cutthroat, which is actually a mountain subspecies of the rainbow trout. The threatened Greenback rainbow trout subspecies was named the official state fish in 1994, but it was originally planted in Colorado’s waters in the late 1800s. There are a number of other non-native rainbow subspecies found in Colorado waters today.
However, for most Colorado anglers the greatest prize in fishing flowing water is hooking, landing, and releasing a cutthroat. The true mountain trout, they represent the high-country lifestyle most authentically. These beautiful trout are only found in a portion of their original range today due to being pushed out by the non-native species, over-fishing, and habitat loss.
While anglers of most any kind are welcome to fish in Colorado, the most iconic method for river trout is fly fishing. The Brad Pitt movie, “A River Runs Through It” is about a lot more than fishing, but gives a good idea of how religiously some anglers take catching trout on flies. It can become a lifestyle.
However, the 50 Campfires team – like most car camping families – aren’t necessarily looking for a lifestyle. They are looking for new experiences and to collect lasting memories. Fly fishing for trout in Colorado easily provides both.
Like anywhere else, fishing in Colorado is governed by regulations and licensing meant to protect the resource and ensure it’s available fairly to the public – the people who own the resource under the North American model of wildlife conservation. In the Centennial State, the body tasked with managing fish resources is the Colorado Department of Parks & Wildlife. You can find out all you need to know about Colorado fishing at their website:
Colorado also has great fishing for warm water species like bass, panfish, catfish, pike, walleye, and more. Public shore fishing provides great access to all of these for family-friendly fishing opportunities.

Hiking to Cub Lake in the Rocky Mountain National Park - Colorado
Dave and Patti Foltz take a five mile hike to Cub Lake in the Rocky Mountain National Park on June 14, 2012.
Rocky Mountain National Park | Hike Sky Pond | Camp Estes Park Colorado
Rocky Mountain National Park was the focus of this trip. We began our trip by driving from Little Rock, Arkansas to Boulder, Colorado. There we picked up food for the weekend at Trader Joe’s. Once done there we drove on to Mary’s Lake Campground in Estes Park, Colorado. The next morning we had a quick breakfast before heading to Rocky Mountain National Park. There we drove to hike at a trail that we have done once before, and really wanted to experience the amazing trial again. That trail is the Sky Pond Trail. It is such an amazing place. After we finished the Sky Pond Trial in Rocky Mountain National Park, we drove back to Mary’s Lake Campground in Estes Park. There we cleaned up before driving to Boulder, Colorado to hang out on Pearl Street. For dinner, we had an amazing meal at The Post Brewing. The next morning we cooked pancakes for breakfast. After that, we left for downtown Estes Park to do a little shopping. After a short time there, we drove back to Rocky Mountain National Park. We drove up the Old Fall River Road to the Alpine Visitor Center. We spent some time touring the area then left to drive the rest of Trail Ridge Road. We then left the park thinking we were going to explore some of the National Forest in the area. However, we ended up driving to the Wild Basin Entrance to the Rocky Mountain National Park. We were not aware that when we turned down this dirt road that it would be another area of the National Park that is not as well known. We found a great place on the St. Vrain Creek to put up some hammocks and relax. We left there to go back to Mary’s Lake Campground to cook dinner. The next morning packed up camp, and drove to Boulder, Colorado where we had breakfast at Tangerine.
Bears in Estes Park and RMNP
Black bears were celebrated in Estes Park May 7th with a fantastic benefit concert by Cowboy Brad Fitch and the TropiCowboy Band. A fun education area included Colorado Parks & Wildlife, Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Valley Bear Education Task Force, Bears Are Us, Estes Park Police Auxillary, YMCA and more. This 15 minute video was shown and featured these same fine organizations warning of feeding bears, intentionally or unintentionally. Hear what they have to say.
Emerald Lake Trail - Rocky Mountain National Park
If you have ever wanted to visit Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, consider it's number #1 rated easy-moderate hike, the Emerald Lake Trail. Under 4 miles round trip and you pass 4 breathtaking alpine lakes on the hike. One of my favorite easy trails in the entire parks system.
These are 3 things that everyone OBVIOUSLY needs to consider before just driving out to do a hike. There are MANY other considerations to be made, but these 3 will at least get you started. These clips are from some gopro ramblings when I spent a week exploring Rocky Mountain National Park earlier this June.
Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Forest
Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Forest
In this second part of our Colorado journey, we go and visit a very hallowed spot in my mind... Estes Park. Why? There were iconic scenes from Dumb and Dumber filmed there! We also do some hiking in the Rocky Mountains.
