Mongolia - Land of the Blue Sky
The most exciting part of Kodamasia Adventure started : using train to reach St Petersburg from Beijing. But before reaching Russia, there is a country that MUST be visited on the way: MONGOLIA.
Going to Mongolia was one of my dream. This country seems very unique: it was the biggest empire of the History of humanity, it’s 3 times bigger than France and 20 times less populated, it’s -40° in winter and +30° in summer, there are more horses than humans, there is the lowest density of population on Earth, and a natural diversity pretty uncommon on Earth, and half of the population living a nomadic life in the nature. For all of these reasons, travelling to Mongolia is something unique.
It took us around 48 hours to reach Oulan Bator (Ulaanbaatar), the Mongolian capital, from Beijing. To go from Beijing to Mongolia, we took a bus during 12hours from Beijing to the Mongolian border, then we used a “passer” (a guy that takes you in his car) to cross the border between China and Mongolia, and we took a Mongolian night train during 16 hours to cross whole country. This train ride was the most beautiful we ever had: crossing infinite green lands, the semi gobi desert, seeing so many animals and nomadic houses…
We stayed a few days in the capital city before going for a tour in the countryside. Ulaanbaatar is a big city, where half of the country population is living. Very contrasted between the developed city center, and the almost slums surrounding the city. You eat very good food there (nightmare for vegetarians), people are nice, there air is clean, and nightlife is awesome. We were staying at Sunpath Hostel, which organised us our tours in the countryside. This hostel is from far the best in UB, due to the kindness and professionalism of the staff. Top 3 hostels in my whole trip so far.
But you don’t go to Mongolia to experience UB. The main point of going to Mongolia is to explore the nature which is unique in the world.
Most of the hostels are also tour organizers. I opted for a week tour in the Orkhon Valley, green land of horses and nomadic people. During this tour, we slept every night in gers (traditional Mongolian “tents”), with nomadic families and real nomadic conditions. Our guide, Doggy, was cooking for us Mongolian food every night. Every day we were driving hundreds of kilometres on very bumpy roads to reach other places. We did horse ridind in paradisiac landscapes, camel riding in the semi Gobi Desert, saw some waterfalls, wild horses, and so many animals everywhere. This experience was the best I could have and I recommend it to everyone. 1 week is not long, I would have done more if I knew in advance how time would fly during this experience…
I had very high expectations before to go to Mongolia, and I’ve not been disappointed a minute. This country is UNIQUE, and the experience there is the best I could have. I recommend it to everyone who wants to live an amazing experience in a completely different place than what he already knows. Everything has been perfect and now I’m sure of one thing: I’ll be back to Mongolia soon!

Mongolia Altai & Eagle Hunters Photography Workshop - March 2020
The Altai of Western Mongolia. A vast open space surrounded by high mountains and deep valleys.
So after watching this how would you like to see and photograph this beautiful area of our Earth? Then join me in March 2020 on a photography tour to the Altai in Western Mongolia where you'll get to stay with Kazakh eagle hunters and also experience these breathtaking landscapes for yourself.
The trip is not for those who love their creature comforts. Those Western values need to stay parked at the airport. This is for those with a sense of adventure. For those who want to see and experience a different way of life away from the hordes of tourists.
Details will be on my website at
The tour will be run with the amazing tour company that is Eternal Landscapes.

The Land of the Blue Sky: Mongolia
This is a 12 days adventure of a lifetime. We journeyed into central Mongolia and the Gobi desert region, drove through desert, climbed mountain and hills, trek along rivers and into the valleys, hike up the sand dune, ride a camel in the desert, horseback riding to the volcano then out to the never ending green pasture.
Completely soaked into the nature, we've seen numerous amazing sunset, sunrise, milky way, full arch rainbow, flaming cliffs, waterfalls, rock formation. Even experienced sand storm and seen mirages in the Gobi desert.
This piece melody features a Mongolian traditional long song called Goolingoo(Romance), the famous throat singing, accompanied by Morin Khuur (Horse head fiddle), Chinese Guzheng and western orchestra.
Listen to the original of the long song here:

The statue of Genghis Khan is 40m high (131 feet), made of stainless steel and was erected in 2008. The base of 36 columns is said to represent the 36 great Khaans (Mongol kings) with the entrance gate to the complex being decorated with statues of the nine generals (noyons) of Genghis Khan.
Genghis Khan is holding a tashuur - a form of whip used by Mongolia's herders and horsemen. It is said that the statue is located where Genghis Khan found the golden whip that inspired his future conquests (one legend states that he found the golden whip when he was travelling to the Khereid tribe to ask for help. Genghis felt this was a message from Tenger (the god of the Eternal Blue Sky) and it motivated him to achieve his wish of becoming ruler of the Mongol clans).

In Search of Commoners in the Xiongnu Empire | Dr. Bryan Miller
The Xiongnu regime mobilized a vast variety of herder households and mounted archers across Inner Asia. Yet much of the scholarly attention given to this first nomadic empire has focused on the uppermost echelons, whether through historical accounts of famous battles and court intrigues, or through excavations of massive ramped tombs of the steppe rulers or standard ring-marked graves of the local elites. These more prominent members of the steppe empire may have controlled the resources – namely animals, people, and products – but they did not constitute the common laborers warriors of the empire. This presentation therefore addresses a collection of historical and archaeological evidence – from frontier records of small raiding parties, to scattered remains of ephemeral campsites – that underscores the populace upon which local and regional elites built the empire. In order to delve further into the lower echelons of Xiongnu society, we may also revisit the numerous cemeteries that have been studied throughout Inner Asia with greater attention to the smallest of features, those interments without offerings or containments for the deceased which usually go unnoticed or unexcavated but are just as telling. Through these we may begin to glean an understanding not only of the lifeways of more ordinary peoples, but also of their place amidst local elites and the roles of “commoners” in the steppe pastoral society oriented toward elevating and sustaining the small faction of Xiongnu rulers.

Mongolia Book Trailer
Mongolia is a land of constant surprises. Renowned for its classic rolling steppe land - from where, in times past, nomadic Mongol clans and confederations swept out to conquer much of the known world - it also boasts snow-capped peaks towering over wide, grassy valleys, meandering rivers and great lakes, as well as badlands, dramatic gorges and mighty sand dunes rising from flat desert floors. Within these enormous vistas much of the old Mongolia can still be found, with herdsmen, horses and heart-warming hospitality wherever you go. But in its growing cities a new Mongolia is emerging, shaking loose from its Soviet-era shackles and making the most of a liberating free-market economy. This beautifully illustrated book provides a comprehensive and insightful guide to the diverse natural history and rich culture of 'The Land of the Eternal Blue Sky.'
+ In-depth historical focus, from prehistory to post-Soviet freedom
+ In search of Genghis Khan
+ Mongolia's incredible natural diversity
+ Insightful analysis of Mongolia's different ethnic groups, cultures and traditions
+ Essays on adventure travel and mountaineering
+ Special sections on traditional crafts, music, customs, etiquette and seasonal celebrations - including the famous Nadaam festival
