Batumi Bay is in the country of Georgia....not the state! and is just east of the Mediterranean with boards of Russia, Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan. Batumi Bay is right on the eastern coast of the Black sea which is not nearly as ominous as it sounds.
In fact, Batumi Bay was beautiful even during the offseason when we visited. Granted, there is no lively excitement, or fun festivals and markets going on along the boardwalk but it did give us a great opportunity to explore at our own pace, take some great pictures and make some fun videos without having to dodge tourists.
Transportation: There are several different ways to get to Batumi bay depending on where you are traveling from.
1. Air - Batumi Bay has one of the 4 international airports in Georgia. Prices vary heavily depending on the time of year that you are visiting so make sure to track your flights on Hopper or Skyscanner to get the best deals.
2. Bus - If you are coming from Turkey you will need to buy tickets from a company called Metro. They are the only bus that travels across the boarder from Turkey to Georgia and vise versa. (Quick travel note: currently the Armeniaturkey boarder is completely closed so if you were planning to take the scenic route you will want to check boarder conditions and political relations.)
Mini-Bus (Marchutca): From any other country and within Georgia you will likely want to grab a marchutca. They are inexpensive, travel from all the major cities including Tbilisi, and come from Russia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. Marchutca's can be challenging as they don't run on regular schedules and you will sacrifice your personal space but they are certianly worth the price. From Tbilisi, you will want to catch the marchutca from Didube station in the north of Tbilisi.
Train: Busses not your cup of tea? Not to fear, Tbilisi has a robust rail system that can take you directly to Batumi Bay. Make sure to buy your tickets in advance from the central station as they can fill up quickly in the peak seasons.
There are two main areas to stay in Batumi so lets just call it old town and new town. Old town is right near the bay and offers a wide variety of accommodation, cuisine, and historical attractions. For those looking for a rugged, historic, European experience we recommend this part of town. For a more relaxing, luxurious experience we recommend the newer part of town, a bit south of the bay right along the boardwalk. You will find many lavish hotels, and apartments at very affordable prices. We recommend the HolidayLux which is roughly the center of new-town
Finally, make sure to take a stroll along the Boulevard (boardwalk), watch as Ali and Nino attempt to reunite with each other, visit Piazza Square and Europe square, and have dinner and drinks at the Alphabetic Tower (aka Alphabet tower).
