Kattabomman Panchalankurichi
Kattabomman Panchalankurichi
Panchalankurichi is a place of Historical significance situated 18Km north west of Tuticorin in the state of Tamilnadu, India.During the latter half of the 18th century, when The East India Company was attempting to establish their authority of the southern extremity of peninsular India. Kattabomman, the chieftain of Panchalankurichi put up a stiff resistance against the East India Company.
Panchalankurichi Fortress - Colonel Welsh In his (military) diary, has described the fort as one shaped like an irregular rhombus, the sides being 500' and 300'. The walls, 12' high, had squarish watch posts and places of concealment. There was a barricade of thorny bushes around the fort. The fort was built to withstand any assault other than a cannon charge, says Welsh. According to Ballads, the stones and bricks of the walls were bound and cemented by a mortar which, among other basics had a ground paste of paddy and Kambu stalks, a viscus seed, soil and sweetened Palmyrah juice. This helped the Fort face up to cannon balls without disintegrating. That this fort was able to withstand a two month siege in 1801 is proof of this.
Veerapandia Kattabomman came to the throne in 1790 when he was 30 years old. The Nawab of Arcot who had borrowed huge sums of money from The East India Company, gave the right to collect taxes and levies in the southern regions. The East India Company wanted to subdue the Polygars first, In 1795 they issued a proclamation which claimed that The Company, not the Nawab, was the Imperial Power to which the Polygars owed allegience. The Polygars were forbidden from raising armies and building forts. If they contravened any law they would be proceeded against like any other citizen infringing the provisions of the criminal law. The Polygars were told they were only land holders and tenants, not rulers.
Kattabommu refused to accept this fiat. Kattabomman delayed remittance of kist dues as he needed time to strengthen the alliance against the English. He avoided meeting collector Jackson of Tirunelveli for a while, when he finally met him at Ramalinga Vilasam, the palace of the Sethupathi at Ramanathapuram, the collector found Kattabomman a hard nut to crack. In spite of several threats Kattabomman stood his ground and in the skirmish that followed, the Deputy Commandant of the company's forces Clarke was slain. Kattabomman and his men fought their way to freedom and safety. Only Thanapathi Pillai, Kattabomman's secretary was taken prisoner.
The Commission of Enquiry which went into the Ramnad Incident fixed the blame on Jackson and relieved him of his post. The Company invited Kattabommu to Tiruchirappalli and tried to win his friendship.
Major Bannerman laid siege to Panchalankurichi on the 5th of September 1799. On the first day of the siege, the English suffered heavy losses. So Bannerman who has (in his diary) admitted to heavy losses, decided to wait for re-inforcements from Palayamkottai. Sensing that his fort could not survive a barrage from heavy cannons-24 Pounders - Kattabommu left the fort the night itself.
A price was set on Kattabommu's head. The forces of Ettayapuram surrounded the palace of the polygar of Kollapatti who had given Kattabommu refuge. Kattabommu escaped with 6 men but his secretary Thanapathi Pillai and 16 others were taken prisoner. Thanapathi Pillai was executed and his severed head kept on a bamboo pole, was ordered to be put on display at Panchalankurichi.
Kattabomman and his aides took refuge in the Thirikalambur Forest close to Pudukottai. The ruler of Pudukottai captured Kattabommu and sent him to Kayathar where Bannerman tried him for sedition on the 16th of October 1799 nearly three weeks after his arrest near Pudukottai. After a summary trial, Kattabomman was hanged unceremoniously on a Tamarind tree on the side of a road in Kayathar. The fort at Panchalankurichi was razed to the ground and all of Katabomman's wealth shared by the English soldiers.

எட்டப்பன் என்றாலே நம் மனதில் எழும் எண்ணம், கட்டபொம்மனை காட்டிக் கொடுத்தவன். யாரெல்லாம் துரோகம் செய்கிறார்களோ, உளவு காண்கிறார்களோ அவர்களை எல்லாம் நாம் எட்டப்பன் என அடையாளப்படுத்தி கூறுகிறோம்.
பள்ளிகளில் இருந்து அலுவலகம் வரை யாரெல்லாம் மேலாண்மை அதிகாரிகளுக்கு சொம்பு தூக்குகிறார்களோ அவர்களுக்கு இந்த பெயர் புனைப்பெயராகிவிடுவது வழக்கம். உண்மையில் எட்டப்பன் என்பது ஒரு நபரின் பெயரல்ல. ஒரு பகுதியை ஆண்ட அரசர்களை குறிக்கும் பெயர்.
திருநெல்வேலி சீமையின் இருந்த பாளையங்களில் பெரிய பாளையம் எட்டயபுரம் . இந்த எட்டயபுரத்தை ஆண்ட அரசர்களை எட்டப்பன் என்று அழைத்தனர். இவர்கள் மக்களுக்கு நிறைய நன்மைகளை செய்தவர்கள். ஆனால், ஒருவரின் செயலால் எட்டப்பன் என்றாலே துரோகி என்பது போல வரலாறு மாறிப்போனது.
எட்டயபுர மன்னர்கள் ஆண்ட பகுதிகளில் ஒன்று சந்திரகிரி. எட்டயபுர நாயக்கர் அரசர்களில் சிறந்தவராக கருதப்படுபவர்கள் குமார முத்து நாயக்கர். இவருக்கு நல்லம நாயக்கர் மற்றும் வடலிங்கம நாயக்கர் என இரண்டு மகன்கள் இருந்தனர்.
குமார முத்து நாயக்கரின் மூத்த மகனான நல்லம நாயக்கர் அப்போதைய விஜய நகரை ஆண்ட சாம்பு மகாராஜாவை காண ஒருமுறை சென்றிருந்தார். சாம்பு ராஜாவின் அரண்மனையை சோமன் எனும் மல்யுத்த வீரனும் அவனது சகோதரர்களும் காவல் காத்து வந்தனர். சாம்புவை காண வரும் யாராக இருப்பினும், வாசலில் கட்டப்பட்டிருக்கும் தங்க சங்கிலியை தலை குனிந்து வணங்கி தான் செல்ல வேண்டும். அந்த சங்கிலியின் ஒருபுறம் சோமனின் காலிலும், மற்றொரு முனை தூணிலும் கட்டப்பட்டிருக்கும். வணங்கி இப்படி செல்ல விருப்பம் இல்லாதவர்கள் சோமனுடன் மல்யுத்த போட்டியில் பங்கேற்று வென்று செல்ல வேண்டும்
கண்டிப்பாக சோமன் மற்றும் நல்லமநாயக்கர் மத்தியில் நடக்க போகும் சண்டை கடுமையானதாக தான் இருக்கும். ஊர் மக்கள் கூட சண்டை ஆரம்பமானது. சண்டையை கண்ணிமைக்காமல் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தனர் அனைவரும். சண்டையின் முடிவில் நல்லமநாயக்கர் சோமனின் தலையை துண்டித்து போட்டியில் வென்றார்.
சாம்பு அரசரை காண சோமனின் தலையை ஒரு கையிலும், இரத்தம் கறை காயாத தனது உடையை மறு கையிலும் ஏந்தி தனது ரத்தத்தில் சென்றார் நல்லமநாயக்கர்.
சோமனின் தம்பிகளின் வருத்தம் கண்டு சாம்பு அரசரும் மனம் வருந்தினார். பிறகு நல்லம நாயக்கரை கண்டு, இவர்களுக்கு சோமனை விட்டால் வேறு யாரும் இல்லை. சோமனின் தம்பிகளை நீதான் தகப்பனாக இருந்து காக்க வேண்டும். சோமனின் எட்டு தம்பிகளையும் உன் மகன்களாக நீ ஏற்றுக் கொண்டு அவர்களுக்கு ஒரு அப்பனாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்றார். இப்படி சோமனின் எட்டு தம்பிகளுக்கு அப்பனாக நல்லமநாயக்கர் ஆனதால் தான், இதன் பிறகு நல்லம நாயக்கரின் பரம்பரைக்கு எட்டப்பன் என்ற பெயர் வந்தது.

Rayappa Kasi Veerapandiya Kattabomman, Biography, India
Veerapandiya Kattabomman Naicker was an 18th-century Palayakarrar and chieftain from Panchalankurichi in Tamil Nadu, India who waged a war against the British East India Company. He was captured by the British and hanged in 1799 CE. Veerapandiyan was born to Jagaveera Kattabomman and Arumugattammal on 3 January 1760. Veerapandiyan was called ‘Karuthaiah’. and had two younger brothers Dalavai Kumarasami and Duraisingam. On 2 February 1790, Veerapandiyan became the ruler of Panchalankurichi. They were telugu speaking Kammavar Naidus who migrated from Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh during migration period into Tamil Nadu and later worked as polygars and became Naickers an Tamil form of Naidu.
Kattabomman was betrayed by the then ruler of the kingdom of Pudukottai Vijaya Raghunatha Tondaiman to the British on 1 October 1799. He was subsequently arrested at Kayathar, interrogated till 16 October 1799 and sentenced to public hanging. On 16 October 1799, he was hanged at Kayathar in Thoothukudi District, Tamil Nadu.
Tinnevelly Gazetteer of 1917, H. R. Pate notes the presence, in Kayatharu, of a great pile of stones of all sizes, which represents the accumulated offerings by wayfarers of the past hundred years. Folk songs recalling the heroism of the Poligar leaders remain alive in Tamil Nadu to this day.... The popular Tamil slang for a traitor or committing treason is Ettapa or Ettapan, courtesy the Ettayapuram Polygar who was involved in the betrayal of Kattabomman. Veerapandia Kattabomman festival is celebrated at Panchalankurichi on his death anniversary.
In 1974, the Government of Tamil Nadu constructed a memorial at Kayathar and the remnants of the old fort at Panchalankurichi are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. Another memorial was inaugurated by the government on 18 June 2015. A statue of Kattabomman is put up in Wellington, Tamil Nadu. To commemorate the bicentenary of Kattabomman’s hanging, India Post brought out a postal stamp in his honour on 16 October 1999 . The communication center of Indian Navy at Vijayanarayanam is named as INS Kattabomman. Till 1997, Tirunelveli division of the Tamil Nadu state transport corporation of was known as Kattabomman Transport Corporation. Veerapandia Kattabomman Panpattu Kazhagam (Veerapandia Kattabomman Cultural association) is an organization named in his honor.
A 1959 Tamil film starring Sivaji Ganesan in the lead role was based on the life of Kattabomman.
