History Is Lunch: Clay Williams, The Glorious 8th of January! A Date Forgotten in History
On January 8, 2020, Clay Williams presented “The Glorious 8th of January! A Date Overlooked in History” as part of the History Is Lunch series.
On January 8, 1815, the British and United States armies faced off in the Battle of New Orleans, the last major engagement of the War of 1812. The U.S. troops under General Andrew Jackson decisively defeated the superior British forces.
“Because a peace treaty had been sent from England before the Battle of New Orleans, that conflict’s significance has been misunderstood and minimized,” said Williams. “But news of the Treaty of Ghent had not reached America by January 8, and the overwhelming victory destroyed the plans of the British to seize the lands of the Louisiana Purchase.”
The Battle of New Orleans helped solidify the United States’ independence. The force gathered to defend the city typified the diverse country the nation had become. Andrew Jackson’s triumphs in the Creek War along with his leadership in the Battle of New Orleans propelled him to the presidency.
“In later years January 8 lost its prominence,” said Williams. “But the U.S. victory on that day was truly one of the most significant military events in the nation’s history.”
Clay Williams is co-author of Battle for the Southern Frontier, the Creek War and the War of 1812 with Mike Bunn. He holds a BA and MA from Mississippi State University. Since 1999, Williams has been employed with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, where he currently oversees operations for the Eudora Welty House and Garden, Manship House Museum, Old Capitol Museum, Winterville Mounds, Historic Jefferson College, and Grand Village of the Natchez Indians. Williams has published articles in the Journal of Mississippi History and Mississippi History Now, and he and Bunn are writing a volume in the Heritage of Mississippi Series on Frontier Mississippi (1800-1840).
History Is Lunch is a weekly lecture series of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History that explores different aspects of the state's past. The hour-long programs are held in the Craig H. Neilsen Auditorium of the Museum of Mississippi History and Mississippi Civil Rights Museum building in Jackson. MDAH livestreams videos of the program at noon on Wednesdays on their Facebook page,

Hamer Humanitarian Awards Luncheon 2015
The Fannie Lou Hamer National Institute on Citizenship and Democracy will recognize six agents of change during the 2015 Fannie Lou Hamer Humanitarian Awards Luncheon to be held Friday, April 24, 2015. The honorees will receive the Fannie Lou Hamer Humanitarian Award in an 11:30 a.m. ceremony held in Ballrooms A & B of the New Student Union on the campus of Jackson State University.
To be honored are Mr. MacArthur Cotton, a Veteran of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement and former member of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Mr. Cotton grew up in Mississippi during the 1950s, when life for Black Mississippians was not much different than it had been during the time of slavery. Cotton’s commitment to social justice was uncanny. As a member of SNCC, he was committed to keeping the peace in and around small towns in Mississippi. The Hamer Institute will also honor Ms. Reena Evers-Everette, the daughter of Medgar and Myrlie Evers and the Executive Director of the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Institute, which provides education and civil-engagement programs to show Medgar Evers' vision on civil rights. Through her work, Mrs. Evers-Everette enables thousands of high school students across the country to learn about the Civil Rights Movement. The head of the Southern Regional Office of the Children's Defense Fund, Ms. Oleta G. Fitzgerald will also be recognized as a Hamer Award recipient. Mrs. Fitzgerald, a champion when addressing concerns for our children, took a stand to advocate fully funding MAEP to the legislature. The Hamer Institute is also recognizing Mr. Hank Holmes, former Executive Director of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH). Having served this state for more than 42 years, Mr. Hank Holmes has helped to archive the rich history of Mississippi. Mr. Holmes spearheaded such accomplishments as an electronic records section that serves as a national model; expansion of efforts to preserve Mississippi American Indian history, the Eudora Welty House and Garden, and the Museum of Mississippi History and Mississippi Civil Rights Museum which plans to open in 2017. Ms. Cynthia Goodloe Palmer, Executive Director of the Veterans of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement, Inc., is also an honoree. While music is her passion, she has been recognized for her work as a public servant in and around Mississippi, working with various groups and agencies. Palmer serves on the Board of Directors of the SNCC Legacy Project and the 50th Anniversary Commemoration of Bloody Sunday, the Selma to Montgomery March, and The Voting Rights Act Committee. Most recently, she served as the Executive Director for the Freedom Summer 50th Anniversary Commemoration and Operations Director for the Freedom Riders 50th Anniversary Commemoration.
Come let us recognize our fellow citizens, Friday, April 24, 2015, on the campus of Jackson State University. For more information, please contact the Hamer Institute at 601-979-1563 or 601-979-4348 or email: Hamer.Institute@JSUMS.edu

SUMMARY
=======
Jackson, officially the City of Jackson, is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Mississippi. It is one of two county seats of Hinds County, along with Raymond, Mississippi. The city of Jackson also includes around 3,000 acres comprising Jackson-Medgar Evers International Airport in Rankin County and a small portion of Madison County. The city's population was estimated to be 165,072 in 2017, a decline from 173,514 in 2010. The city sits on the Pearl River and is located in the greater Jackson Prairie region of Mississippi.
Founded in 1821 as the site for a new state capital, the city is named after General Andrew Jackson, who was honored for his role in the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812 and would later serve as U.S. president. Following the nearby Battle of Vicksburg in 1863 during the American Civil War, Union forces under the command of General William Tecumseh Sherman began the Siege of Jackson and the city was subsequently burned.During the 1920s, Jackson surpassed Meridian to become the most populous city in the state following a speculative natural gas boom in the region. The current slogan for the city is The City with Soul. It has had numerous musicians prominent in blues, gospel, folk, and jazz.
Jackson is the anchor for the Jackson, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the state's largest metropolitan area with a 2016 population of 579,332, about one-fifth of Mississippi's population.
