Death Valley, March 2016, Eureka Dunes
In February 2016 there were multiple media reports of an impending Super Bloom in Death Valley National Park. A once in a decade event, the lure was too much for me. So, I packed up my gear and headed to California. While I fully expected to not be the only person to think of this, I was confident that my Jeep would allow me to access areas too remote for the madding crowds.
This is the third full day of my stay in the park. It was Friday morning and my plan was to head up to Eureka Dunes. When I arrived the previous night, after buying just enough gas in Panamint Springs to get me back to a dollar a gallon cheaper gas in Furnace Creek, the gas station was too busy and I was tired. So I figured I’d refuel this morning. Except they were out! So, running on fumes, I headed to Stovepipe Wells, where I found gas and was then ready to head up to Eureka Dunes. On the way I’d pass Mesquite Flat dune field and Devil’s Cornfield. After my return from Eureka Dunes, I'd stop a shoot a few stills of the Harmony Borax Works.

Break down in desert! Eureka Dune, Death Valley National Park, California 車子在死谷拋錨啦!《美國加州》
The Eureka Dunes lie in the remote Eureka Valley, an enclosed basin at 3000 foot elevation located northwest of Death Valley. The dunes cover an area only 3 miles long and 1 mile wide, yet they are the tallest sand dunes in California, possibly the tallest in all of North America. They rise suddenly more than 680 feet above the dry lakebed at their western base. As tall as these dunes are, they are dwarfed by the impressive limestone wall of the Last Chance Mountains which rises another 4000 feet above the valley floor.

Eureka Valley and Dunes, Death Valley National Park
panoramas of the Eureka Dunes around sunset 6-18-12 and the valley 6-19-12. I went with no sound track with this one because beside the light wind, there is very little sound here at all, even the wind is quiet without anything to blow over. Very few take Death Valley road, fewer still take the spur out to the Dunes. There is no water here, there were no people for at least 50 miles. I was on my motorcycle stocked with camping gear and water. If you get stuck here, odds are you will see one other person per day so be prepared. 2 gallons water per person per day, it's 50 miles to the gas station. The good news is if you arrive at the Eureka road in the heat of the day, there is an escape- The Eureka Valley is only 10-15 miles across, at either end you can drive up 1000+ feet and find some cooler weather and a little shade in the canyons, then journey out to the Dunes when it is a little cooler- camping, it was too hot to stay at the Dunes by 830am! If you want solitude, this is the place- hot, barren and EMPTY

Tallest Sand Dunes in California - Eureka Dunes, Death Valley NP
We visited Death Valley National Park in December of 2017. 180 miles seemed like a LONG drive, but we really wanted to see Eureka Dunes! And the drive from Furnace Creek North is stunning, so we decided to give it a go. Even though we spent most of the day driving, it was such a FUN adventure! We weren't there at the time of year for singing sand dunes but it was still a great adventure! Find out more at happytrailshiking.com
From the Park Website A pale mountain of sand appears to hover over the flat valley floor. Rugged cliffs loom high above, boldly striped with pink, gray, and black. The distant yipping of a coyote is interrupted by a mysterious rumbling sound emitting from the dune itself. Welcome to Eureka Dunes, one of the newest additions to Death Valley National Park.
Highest Dunes
The Eureka Dunes lie in the remote Eureka Valley, an enclosed basin at 3000 foot elevation located northwest of Death Valley. The dunes cover an area only 3 miles long and 1 mile wide, yet they are the tallest sand dunes in California, possibly the tallest in all of North America. They rise suddenly more than 680 feet above the dry lakebed at their western base. As tall as these dunes are, they are dwarfed by the impressive limestone wall of the Last Chance Mountains which rises another 4000 feet above the valley floor.
Singing Sand
The climb to the summit of the dunes is not an easy walk. All the slopes are steep and the loose sand gives way beneath your feet. At the top, the sweeping view seems reward enough for your efforts, yet if the sand is completely dry you may experience one of the strangest phenomena to be found in the desert: singing sand. When the sand avalanches down the steepest face of the highest dune, a sound like a bass note of a pipe organ or the distant drone of an airplane can be heard eminating from the sand. If the dune is at all damp (even though it may not feel so to the touch) no sound will be made. Why this occurs is not fully understood, but may have something to do with the smooth texture of the sand grains and the friction of those grains sliding against each other.

Eureka Dunes Camping And Hiking - Death Valley National Park
The Eureka Dunes are a breathtaking place to see. Otherworldly. Vast. Still. Quiet. Peaceful. Unforgiving.
I truck camped in my 4Runner 2-3 miles beyond Eureka Dunes Dry Camp area in the remote Southeast area of the dunes. The area is so remote you feel like you are the only human on the planet. Time stands still and you are taken away by the pure beauty of the environment that surrounds you.
If you plan to visit and camp at Eureka Dunes be advised of the conditions and weather forecast. The temperature dropped just below 32 F the night I was there in late November, 2018.

EUREKA DUNES
We camped alone at the base of the majestic Eureka Dunes in Death Valley National Park. The Eureka Dunes lie in the remote Eureka Valley at an elevation of 3000-feet. The dunes cover an approximate area of roughly three-miles long and one-mile wide and yet they are the tallest and most remote sand dunes in California. They rise nearly 700-feet above the dry and desolate lakebed at their northwestern base.
With a beautiful crescent moon and the planet Venus off to our west, we listened to the dunes sing to us during a dark and magnificent starry night.

MESQUITE FLAT SAND DUNES! DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, CA.
Mesquite Flat Dunes
These dunes are the best known and easiest to visit in the national park. Located in central Death Valley near Stovepipe Wells, access is from Hwy. 190 or from the unpaved Sand Dunes Road. Although the highest dune rises only about 100 feet, the dunes actually cover a vast area. This dune field includes three types of dunes: crescent, linear, and star shaped. Polygon-cracked clay of an ancient lakebed forms the floor. Mesquite trees have created large hummocks that provide stable habitats for wildlife.
